THE STORY OF SIHA SIHA Steering Group. Hermione Elliottt, Latidjah Miller and

At the Innsbruck World Congress an
historic agreement was signed between
the World Subud Association (WSA)
and the Subud International Health
Association (SIHA).
The agreement provides for WSA to
encourage that SIHA be invited to at-
tend national, zonal and international
meetings and the appointment of na-
tional representatives.
The WSA will include SIHA in informa-
tion flowing from and to the World
Subud Council (WSC), ISC and the af-
filiates (like SES, SD and so on) and,
through ISC, will help to disseminate
information for SIHA. SIHA is also
permitted to fundraise among Subud
members.
This was the end of a very long and
sometimes painful and difficult process
to have SIHA officially recognized by
the WSA.
One of the “prime movers” in SIHA
since the Spokane World Congress has
been Latidjah, a nurse from the USA.
As the Coordinator of SIHA and a
member of the steering committee which
also included Maxwell Fraval, Rohanna
Salom and Hermione Elliott, it was her
persistence which has been most re-
sponsible for SIHA’s final acceptance.
The recognition of SIHA is an impor-
tant milestone in the development of
Subud and it is an illuminating story
worthy to be told some detail.
Therefore, I recently talked with Latid-
jah to obtain her version of these events.
(The interview also incorporates contri-
butions from Hermione Elliott and
Maxwell Fraval, who is now the Coordi-
nator of SIHA since the Innsbruck Con-
gress.)
First, Latidjah, can you tell me a little
about yourself?
I was opened in Subud in 1965 in Los
Angeles. Currently, I have a private prac-
tice as a Nutritionist, specializing in Food
Sensitivities and Detoxification. I am a
Registered Nurse and was working at
Georgetown University Hospital in the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the time
that I became the SIHA Coordinator at
the Spokane World Congress. I had also
been working as a Director of a non-
profit organization called World Medical
Aid. I am married and the mother of six
children.
When did your interest in SIHA begin?
My interaction with SIHA began at the
World Congress in Spokane. During the
meetings held there (Congress Work
Groups related to SIHA) I met Sjahari
Hollands. He had organized the first
SIHA group at the Anugraha Congress in
the 1980’s.
Sjahari Hollands is a medical doctor
from Canada. There is an old Subud
World News (Anugraha era) that has a
story about the setting up of SIHA and
about the idea of setting up a Subud hos-
pital. I actually have a copy of it on my
bookshelf.
He told me about his experience of orga-
nizing the meetings of doctors at the
Anugraha Congress and conveyed to me
that Bapak had given the name SIHA
(Subud International Health Associa-
tion). Sjahari felt that Bapak was very
pleased that the doctors were organizing.
Bapak also offered to test the Chairman
of SIHA. In addition, there was a hope of
setting up a Subud Hospital at that time.
So the idea of SIHA had actually been
around for quite some time?
Yes, so I started out with the feeling that
we were carrying something forward that
had been blessed by Bapak. If not for
that, it would have been difficult to con-
tinue.
Are there any particular statements of
Bapak's that are seen as seminal?
We have a favorite quotation of Bapak’s
on our website at www.subud-health.org
"The fact is that God guides man to be
his own doctor, his own teacher, so that
he does not need to depend on anyone
else. And once you can do that, once you
can be independent of everybody and
stand on your own feet, it will lead you
to a feeling of confidence in yourself."
But Bapak’s talks are full of statements
about setting up hospitals and caring for
our own members as well as the commu-
nity.

Welcome to the first World Subud Asso-
ciation Newsletter! This newsletter is pro-
duced by ISC, which is the executive com-
mittee of the WSA. Please feel free to con-

YOUR NEW INTERNATIONAL
TEAM
The international team tested and ap-
pointed at the 12th Subud World Congress
in Innsbruck this summer is made up of:
World Subud Association Presidency:
WSA Chairlady, Osanna Vaughn, origi-
nally from Jersey Channel Islands (UK),
brought up (and opened) in Spain, lives in
Hamburg, Germany. She is currently hav-
ing her first book published in German
under the title ‘Der Schrei des Falken.’
The English original is called ‘Falcon
Sight.’
Deputy Chair WSA, Frederic Richard is
French and living in Vienna. Frederic stud-
ied at Columbia University, in New York.
He taught at the Ecole Superieure de Com-
merce de Paris and at the famous ENA
school in Paris. For the past 20 years he
has worked for the United Nations Indus-
trial Development Organization undertak-
ing research on industrial development
issues and traveling all over the world to
advise governments and business leaders
on industrialization.
International Subud Committee Core
Team: ISC Chairman, Garrett Thomson
is English. He studied at Oxford Univer-
sity, lived for a time in Colombia and now
lives in Wooster, Ohio, USA, where he
teaches philosophy. He is the author of 15
books. Garrett’s favourite words in any
meeting or conversation are: ‘Absolutely’
and ‘Excellent!’ Garrett’s address is 839

Deputy ISC Chair, Maya Bernardes, as
she is the younger twin (by 15 minutes) of
Osanna, she was born and raised in the
same place. She has lived in France for 30
years and, after joining Osanna for a
unique experience as a Bluebell Girl danc-
ing at the Lido, in Paris, has mostly
worked in the entertainment and event
management world.
ISC Treasurer is Samuel Simonsson. Few
know that he is originally Swedish. He
lived for many years in Germany, for some
time in California, and is now at home in
Orgiva in the south of Spain. He has been
and still is an active and successful entre-

preneur. With Samuel, the word
‘treasurer’ will take on a new
meaning!
ISC Support (of which much is
needed) is Julia Hurd, born and
living in the United States. Julia
just finished her term as Zone 7
Representative.
What does this team have in com-
mon? Well, the first five speak at
least three languages each, and

born on July 30th (Power to

lar vision, with a strong desire to really
network, communicate, and interact with

Other ISC Team Members: Leonard van
Willenswaard continues as the WSA/ISC
Accountant; the accounts therefore will
remain in Holland and this will facilitate
continuity in this most important domain.
ISC has appointed Rayner Sutherland
(Canada) as the administrator of the Care
Support Team (before known as the Inter-
national Almoners), taking over from Jim
Williams whom we thank for his dedicated
work for over fifteen years as Almoning
helper and coordinator. Within that team
Roseanne Naeshagen (Norway) will con-
tinue with Refugee Care Work. ISC hopes
to expand the Care Support work.
ISC has appointed Amalijah Thompson
(Australia) the International Archives Co-
ordinator. We want to take this occasion to
thank Reinier Sillem for the great work he
did during the previous term.
Matthew Weiss (Ireland) is the new Inter-
net Coordinator, replacing Hassan
Czwiertnia, whom we also wish to thank
for his many contributions.

Wings: Subud International Cultural As-
sociation: Olivia Moyano (Argentina), our
new SICA Chairperson, reports that her
first immediate goal is to establish the new

tronic newsletter, research and create a
calendar of events around the world for
2006, and publish a paper about SICA

First Planning Meeting:The WSA chair
persons and the ISC core team will meet in
Lewes, UK, on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of

Translation Teams: To communicate
better, ISC has set up a full Spanish trans-
lation team of 12 people, so that all infor-
mation and reports will systematically go
out in this language at the same time. Cur-
rently a French team is being set up, and
soon an Indonesian one as well.
World Subud Council Meetings: An
Invitation: The World Subud Council
meeting, along with Susila Dharma Inter-
national and the Muhammad Subud Foun-
dations’ annual meetings, will take place
around the last ten days of May 2006. ISC
has sent out a letter inviting countries to
host these meetings and we hope that a
gathering might be organized at the same
time.
On Protecting the Subud Name: ISC has
created and is currently sending out a sim-
ple Licensing Agreement for the use of the
name “Subud” and the Seven Circles logo.
This will serve to protect us and to
strengthen our position for registration of
the name Subud in the United States.
World Latihans: The last point in this
newsletter is to remind everyone of the
very fulfilling World Latihans. These take
place on the first weekend of every month,
between Saturday and Sunday depending
on your time zone. The schedules of these
latihans (GMT and CET) are posted on
www.subudworldnews.comm and in
every issue of Subud Voice. In the next
newsletter, we will provide a table show-
ing times in countries in different time-
zones.

BINA CITA UTAMA

Bina Cita Utama (BCU) is the school that
has been established in Rungan Sari, on
the Subud land in Central Kalimantan.
For more than 2 years parents and resi-
dents of Rungan Sari, as well as teachers,
have worked towards the realization of
this project.
This effort has been made with the firm
belief that a school represents one of the
most meaningful contributions that
Subud can make to promote human de-
velopment in Central Kalimantan.
On April 30th, 2005, Bina Cita Utama
School held an Open House and presen-
tation for the public, inviting local people
from Palangka Raya and nearby to join
the bilingual, multicultural school start-
ing the academic year of 2005/2006 in
July.
Approximately 80 people, including
many local dignitaries and the Mayor of
Palangka Raya, attended the open house.
The Mayor's speech praised the efforts of
Subud to start a high-quality bilingual
school in Central Kalimantan. He also
asked that we make every effort to enable
talented but needy local children to at-
tend BCU.

teachers, writes…
It was amazing to arrive back from con-
gress and see our little school trans-
formed. The construction work on the

new classrooms was finished, the library
was set up, all the new staff and students
were there.
The office was up and running complete
with a cheerful, helpful office lady (who
now, along with our Indonesian Principal
and his wife, is an applicant for Subud).
All the planning and preparation had paid
off and there was a real school - a real
school with the most vibrant atmosphere.
The new Indonesian students are so
happy to be there, and eager to learn. The
expressions on their faces as they come
out of the bus each morning is really a
sight to behold - bigger smiles and more
enthusiasm than western kids walking
through the gates of Disney Land!
Really! Their excitement and joy is con-
tagious and I feel happy whenever I am
with them. There is also an undercurrent
of gratitude with the students. I can sense
that they really understand that out of all
the thousands of children in Central Kali-
mantan, they are the few with access to
good quality education.
Here they have access to computers with
encyclopedias, well-trained teachers,
sports equipment and a swimming pool.
And they really enjoy and appreciate it.
Their sense of gratitude is contagious.
Sometimes I am overwhelmed with a
sense of gratitude to God for allowing me
to be here and be a part of Subud giving
this gift to the people of Kalimantan. I
really hope we can grow and educate
more children and teachers, especially
the Dayaks, whose homeland we are in-
habiting.

children for the nearby Dayak villages
are enabled to attend the school. A

unteers program whereby people will be
supported to come and work at the
school.

adds…
The Government of Central Kalimantan
has been highly supportive of the project,
as it believes that a ”National Plus”
school developed at Rungan Sari could
become a model for schools in the prov-
ince. In our open day earlier this year,
the Mayor praised the efforts of Subud in
starting a high quality bilingual school in
Central Kalimantan and also asked that
we make every effort to enable talented
but needy children to attend the school.
We have a Scholarship Program to pro-
vide tuition to village children in the area
(currently we have two Dayak children in
this program).
We also have a Volunteer program to
create opportunities for Subud members
to gain experience of working at the
school and living in Kalimantan.
Teacher training courses are currently
being conducted with the new teachers
and we plan to develop this and establish
a teacher-training program so that we can
help other schools improve their teaching
standards and methodologies.
Scholarship Program…
An aim in establishing Bina Cita Utama
School is to give best quality education
for children living in Central Kalimantan.
Due to extreme poverty of some commu-
nity members in Central Kalimantan and
in order for this quality education to
benefit a larger population a scholarship
program has been established. Especially
talented and clever children coming from
a lower socio-economic background will
be the beneficiaries of these scholarships.

Our youth writer, Maya King from the
UK, talks about some of the issues facing
young people in Subud. A very honest
and moving article…
Over the summer, everything in my life
has changed (with the possible exception
of my bedroom curtains). Admittedly,
things have been changing in my life since
about May, but going to Innsbruck really
accelerated the change.
Just before sitting my exams in June, I had
the sense that I was at the beginning of a
long set of crossroads, which would ulti-
mately determine who I really am.
Initially, this article was going to be about
the challenges I faced growing up in
Subud. But the words I wanted just would-
n’t form. Somehow the only thing that I
feel capable of writing about concerns
finding my place in Subud and Subud
Youth.
I don’t know if it’s connected to the influ-
ence of the first new moon of winter, or if
it’s because today is the first day of Rama-
dan, I’m not sure. Maybe neither.
Crystallised at World Congress
My feelings about being “youth” crystal-
lised at World Congress, where I had great
difficulty being honest about my surname.
For many years, at every single Subud
event I’ve attended, I’ve had random
strangers look at my name tag and murmur
noises of either appreciation or derision,
and proceed in telling me unknown stories
about how they know my father.
This sounds fair enough, but it has been
negative at times. This time, I wanted to
make my own way in the world. So I
changed my name-tag surname from Hor-
ton to King, and went off to make my own
friends in the safety of relative anonymity.
The main issue is that I felt I had no iden-
tity in Subud, that I was just “the daugh-
ter,” and nobody would accept me for who
I really was. I am proud of my parents and
love both of them very much despite eve-
rything, yet I had a strong sense of want-
ing to make friends on my own.
I spoke to many second and even some
third generation Subud youth at Congress
who all expressed the same feelings. I
found this very, very challenging and up-
setting, and I couldn’t help but wonder
why a whole generation has to feel so
squashed at times.
There have been so many benefits of
growing up in Subud and being born of
two Subud parents, but this oppressive
feeling of always being on a lower rung to
the older members really started to get to
me. It became all the more painful and
surprising because I could see that others
my age felt the same.
They All Seemed Rather Bored
I have this memory from a few months
after I was officially opened, where I was
trying to explain to an older member about
this amazing receiving I’d had, concerning
a ball of light in the middle of this great
garden where all the Gods and Goddesses
from every single world religion were just
sitting around, and I realised they were all
part of this great source, but they had to
vary because we are a varied species and
individuals need a personal interface with
God.

several people at a regional
meeting, and they all seemed
rather bored…”

seemed rather bored. I kept being told that
many people had received something simi-
lar. I can laugh at it now, but at the time I
felt so utterly ignored - as if my own reve-
lations counted for nothing because I was-
n’t the first person to receive it, and as
such nobody really cared!
I’ve had great difficulty coming to terms
with my own individuality, and it’s really
only very, very recently that I’ve been able
to be proud of who I am, even though I’m
far from perfect and only at an arbitrary
point along my personal spiritual journey.
This sudden ability to accept myself for
who I am has hit me like a thunderbolt - I
sense that Subud parents often believe that
the youth can (and must) be brilliant at
absolutely everything because we’re gifted
with the latihan. It’s true that we are an
incredibly talented bunch, but even we
can’t be good at every single thing we try!
I nearly walked out of Subud so many
times because I felt that nobody would
accept me for who I really was. Despite
Bapak saying constantly that there are no
rules, I always have felt that there is a very
strong code of conduct I must adhere to.
I found my true religion (Goddess-
orientated paganism) at the age of 15, but
was pushed away from it by harsh words
from “friends of the family” who accused
me in turn of Devil Worship and mixing.
Fearing I’d be kicked out of Subud, I spent
an unhappy four years pretending to be a
Buddhist. It’s only since Innsbruck have I
worked with helpers who have allowed me
to finally accept that my beliefs come from
deep within me, and that I am following a
genuine, positive belief system, and not
some just dodgy form of Victorian escap-
ism. Since accepting this, my feelings to-
wards myself and my life have dramati-
cally improved.
Be Who You Really Are
My main feeling in writing this article was
to call to all Subud youth - no matter what
happens, please just be who you really are,
deep inside. Don’t try and be something
you’re not.
Obviously, this is true for all youth any-
where in the world, but even more so for
Subud youth. It sounds so obvious, but it
took me four years to accept that - four
years in which I wasn’t really moving for-
ward in my latihan as well as I should be-
cause of it.
Ultimately, we are the ones who will in-
herit the responsibilities of Subud and, and
we’re going to need all our strength to take
the latihan to the place it needs to go.
I sometimes feel that we’re on a cruise
ship with no specific direction. We’re not
in danger and we have plenty of supplies.
We’re surrounded by friends and loved
ones, and we’re having a great time.
But we’re going to reach land eventually,
and when we do, each and every one of us
is going to be uniquely important and vital
to allow us to do what we have to do,
whatever that may be. Until then, let’s just
relax a bit and enjoy the scenery...

Brothers and sisters whom I respect and
love; tonight I will continue with my ex-
planation about the latihan.
I will explain to you why we need to do
latihan. After an opening, after someone is
opened in Subud, they have to continue
the process of their development by doing
latihan. Why? By doing latihan that person
will go through different processes – all of
us develop our latihan by going through a
step by step process. This is because our
progress in the latihan does not just de-
pend on how diligently we do the latihan,
but it is also closely connected to the way
we live our lives.
Brothers and sisters, from our common
experience, as we do latihan we initially
experience a growth or coming to life of
the soul that we have within us. During
this process we become very sensitive be-
cause we are introduced for the first time
to the equipment we use that we have in-
side us, our inner feelings, and the devel-
opment of our true self. This process can
have a big impact on the person con-
cerned, and usually we will go through
what we call purification.
A Test of our Commitment
If we look at this process of purification, it
doesn't just take the form of an illness, or
feeling unwell, but we are tempted or
tested by many things that are like a test of
our commitment to do latihan.
This happens because the contact we ex-
perience in our soul that comes from the
Power of God does not just touch our hu-
man soul, it also touches the lower forces
that have helped us live our life. These
forces receive this touch so that, as the
master of your being, you will become
their boss or master. At the same time,
because these forces come to life, they also
grow. And as a result, when they help you,
they will be more effective, or stronger,
than the lower forces of someone who has
not been opened. As such, these forces
inside you can be likened to people, or
powers, that work for you.
Why do we say they work for us? It is be-
cause these forces have an expectation or
hope, in the same way we do. As human
beings we hope that when we die we will
return to God with a human soul. Our
lower forces have similar hopes – they
have their own worlds and they hope that
when they die they will return to those
worlds. So, doing latihan means that you
won’t be the only one to get what you

hope for, but when you come to leave the
low forces that you use, they will not be
left stranded in a place they do not want to
be, but they can return to their rightful
worlds.
During this process, we are often aware of
how these different forces work within us.
Sometimes we feel strong in that we have
full possession of our human soul, but at
other times we are overcome by some
pleasure, or something that makes us for-
get – and then our true self, our human
soul forgets itself. Then your lower forces
occupy the master’s position within you –
this happens to you all the time in every-
day life.

Just Think about it…
Just think about it, we live in this world
and we do all kinds of things in everyday
life, and in doing so we forget who it is
that should be our boss. In fact, we don’t
just forget, or make room for our lower
forces; we are defeated by them, because
we are not strong enough to control these
forces within us.
This is why you need to do latihan, be-
cause when you do latihan you face in
only one direction - toward Almighty God.
In that way, you can be routinely helped,
or you can help yourself. This is just an
example. But, in our daily lives we have to
face all kinds of difficulties and problems.
This is why the first stage of the latihan
takes a long time. A year may not be
enough, two years may not be enough,
even 10 years may not be enough time for
you to get to know yourself and how you
should be in yourself.
The second process we go through is
called preparation. Why do we say we are
prepared in this second stage? Due to the
influences of this world there is no room
inside you, you are full, or there is only a
little space where you can feel a vibration,
where you can feel this touch from the
Power of God. As a result you can only
sense the movement of your soul to a
small extent.
So, in this second phase, after you have
gone through purification and you have a
greater ability to let go, little by little you
will develop the ability to fill that space
within you where the life of your soul can
develop and grow freely. Then your soul
can proceed to touch one part after another
of your being, and when many parts of you
have been penetrated, your soul will be
free to move within them.
You can experience and witness your pro-
gress for yourself. When you test for ex-
ample, “Where are your feet?” If your
feet are alive, if they have been penetrated
by your soul, you will feel something in
your feet and they will move by them-
selves, even though this not what you in-
tended. The same is true for the other parts
of your body, and this process will also
extend to your emotions and your mind.
If you ask, “How is that possible?” Why is
it that when I test, “Where are your feet?”
your feet can receive and experience the
test? This is not because of me; it is not
due to my power. It happens because of
the unity of the power that is present in all
of us, that exists between all Subud mem-
bers who have been opened. The way it
works is this, I surrender to God and God
accepts my surrender and then it spreads to
you. It is not my power that touches you, it
is God’s Power. This is why you don’t
need to be physically close to me to ex-
perience this; anyone who does latihan can
feel this.
Receiving...
This is closely connected to helpers’ work,
as they test with the members. When we
test as a helper, we have to be completely
empty; we have to be completely free of
self-interest, so that the soul of the person
being tested will be touched by what they
need through the working of God's Will.
Closely connected with testing are the ex-
periences you have in latihan that we call
receiving. Sometimes you do not under-
stand what your receiving means. The rea-
son for this is that your receiving goes
through a step-by-step process too, so the
question is what level can you receive at?
Take your feet; for example, if you move
your feet in a test it is a receiving, because
the movement was unintentional, your feet
moved because they were touched by
God’s Power. But, can you tell whether
the movement you received was 100%
the movement of your human soul’s feet,
or was there also a lower force present
that lent its power to the movement of
your feet? This is why your receiving
often turns out wrong, because your re-
ceiving is still faulty.
It is faulty because you are still far from
being able to meet the requirements of a
pure receiving, particularly if your lati-
han is not alive yet. For this reason, it is
wrong to say that a test must be right.
However, we still need this kind of test-
ing as we develop our soul. But we can-
not say that the result of a test is right or
wrong until the outcome is known. That
is why it is said that only God possesses
the truth.
When we test we try to get close to the
truth. We try to approach the truth with
our being that has been touched by God.
It is only an attempt and it is not the case
that every test has to turn out right. Even
my testing can be wrong, because I am a
human being and I live in this world.
So, for now you have to be satisfied with
what you can receive. Suppose you test
with a helper, but the result turns out to
be wrong, so you blame the helper.
That's not right! That helper is still a hu-
man being.
How Can We Tell When a Receiving is
Truly God’s Will?
But how can we know? How can we tell
when a receiving is truly God’s Will?
When you hear God say something to
you it will only be true if you are not in
this world. Can any of you do that? I
don’t think so, because you can only
have that kind of receiving if it is God’s
Will. It is impossible for us to go there
just because we want to. If God wants to
tell you something, or explain something
to you, it won't happen here, you will be
taken from this world.
God will not call you physically; God
will not take your physical body, but
your soul. This was shown by Bapak
who passed his receiving to all of you.
Bapak received this contact and every-
thing that Subud needs. And, according
to Bapak’s own account, Bapak’s receiv-
ing did not happen once or twice. It took
Bapak 1000 days to receive this. Bapak
received Subud when Bapak was not in
this world, when Bapak’s soul was sum-
moned to receive everything that was
necessary for Subud.
Some people say that now that Bapak is
no longer with us, we don't need to read
Bapak’s talks, or Bapak's explanations
anymore, because we will understand
everything for ourselves. Well, God will-
ing you will be able to understand for
yourself. But the fact is, Bapak had this
receiving, and I am sure that not only
Bapak received this way, the prophets
also received this way. And there may
also be Subud members who have ex-
perienced leaving this world and who
received something when their soul was
called to the presence of God.
This is not fiction - during that receiving
Bapak did not sleep for 1000 days. If you
say, “Well, how can a human being do
that?” It could happen because of God's
Will; God provided everything that was
needed.
So, brothers and sisters, Bapak’s receiv-
ing was no ordinary receiving, the proof
of that Bapak’s receiving has spread to
all of you. And Bapak didn't want Subud
just for Bapak. Bapak passed it to anyone
who wanted to worship God by doing
latihan.
If you read Susila Budhi Dharma, it con-
tains everything that Bapak received.
Understanding and Awareness
This is what I have to say about receiv-
ing. Now I want to talk about the proc-
esses of understanding and awareness.
Once you start to receive understanding
in your latihan and you have been able to
experience the proof of your latihan you
will become aware. What I mean by that
is you become aware by yourself without
anyone telling you. Now, once you have
this understanding and awareness, you
will never leave Subud, you will never
stop doing latihan.
So, for example, many people join
Subud, but many people leave Subud.
This shows that they don’t have this un-
derstanding and they are not aware of
their inner need to do latihan. Of course,
this cannot be imposed on them as every
individual has a choice; everyone has
free will. God is All Knowing, so if you
don't want Subud it doesn't matter if you
leave, it does not mean that something
bad will happen to you as a result. Subud
cannot be forced on anyone, it must arise
from a person’s own will, because your
spiritual development starts and ends
with you.
As your soul continues to grow, after it
has spread to every part of you, your in-
dividuality will manifest - this is your
true human self. But, even after we gain
our individuality, we can still be tempted
by desires that reside in our heart and
mind. This is why, even after we have
become a true human being, if we are not
firm in our faith we can still be tempted
by our own lower forces. That is why
there are many stories of, for example, a
demigod being tempted by a woman.
The truth is that human beings are weak
in their faith. So, to strengthen your faith,
you cannot afford to forget for even a
second the awareness that God is always
with you, that God is always present in
you. God is always there because God
has placed inside you the Ruh Ilafi. This
power observes your life; it is the law of
life that is in each one of us. So, every-
thing you do is recorded. If you think
you are advanced because you can use
computers to see this or that, to compute
anything, God has computers that are a
thousand times more powerful than any-
thing human beings make.
So, for Subud members, if a Subud mem-
ber is someone with the qualities of
susila, budhi and dharma, they must take
greater care than someone who has not
been opened yet. If we ask, “Is it possi-
ble for a human being to become sub-
human?” Yes, if it is God's Will, it is!
But, provided a human being maintains
his or her faith, God will protect them
and they will become a human on the
rohani level. There are even rohani hu-
man beings who still live in this world –
such a person is free of the lower forces
and the influence of their heart and their
mind.
So, although we say we are human be-
ings, we must remember that as long as
we live in this world, we must limit the
action and the working of our lower
forces, so that we can be free of tempta-
tions that may cause us to lose our hu-
manity.
But, brothers and sisters, God is All-
Loving and All-Giving, and now that
your soul is alive, your life and latihan
will not be limited to this world, but your
soul will live on after you die. Subud is
not something you just do when you
think you are about to die.
Subud is the knowledge you need for
your life in the next world after you die,
when you can no longer use your heart or
mind, which you have to leave behind.
But your soul will live on, and how it
will live will depend on the preparation
you make in this world. This is why it is
not enough just to do latihan here; we
will keep doing latihan in the next world.
This is the end of my explanation about
the latihan and the life of our soul. I will
stop now, and I hope that you can absorb
this explanation.

There were those pioneering efforts
such Brookhurst Grange, the hospital in
England in the early days of Subud.
There is an article about the history of
Brookhurst Grange written by Hermione
Elliott on the SIHA website. She did
some research on Brookhurst Grange,
hoping to capture some of the stories be-
fore the history gets lost. You can look at
it under the Resonance section.
When you say “difficult to continue” we
receive a hint that the story of SIHA has
not all been plain sailing and easy ac-
ceptance. But first, a little about Spo-
kane. Who were the main people inter-
ested in SIHA at that time? Did you
have some meetings? Did you try to for-
mulate a concept and a development
plan?
We had several working group meetings
at Spokane Congress in 1997. These
were originally organized by Richard
Salisbury, a psychologist from California,
and some others under the SHAPA
(Subud Healing Arts Professional Asso-
ciation) umbrella. At one of the early
meetings, the name issue came up and we
went forward with the name SIHA.
The meetings were productive and a pro-
posal was drawn up to be submitted to the
WSC. It was presented as the very last
item of the WSC agenda at Congress.
Then there was an interesting little twist
of fate.
By the time the SIHA Proposal was made
to WSC, the budget had already been
closed and the Council members were
two hours or more past lunch trying to
finish up the remaining business. They
actually approved the SIHA proposal but
strange as it seems, it was not recorded in
the minutes.
So, the SIHA members who presented the
proposal and witnessed the approval were
under the impression that it was all
agreed upon by WSC with the exception
that no funds were allocated as the budget
was already passed and was a closed
item.
But later, as there was no mention in the
minutes, and of course the members of
the World Council change after Congress,
the new Council members weren't aware
of what had happened. It seems there
was a memory failure.
How disconcerting and confusing.
Several of the new SIHA Steering Com-
mittee members, including myself, ar-
ranged to meet together in England a cou-

ple months after the Spokane Congress.
We asked to meet with Sharif Horthy
who was the new WSA Chair. He in-
vited us to come to his house in Lewes.
Together we discussed the formation of
SIHA.
We were in hopes that WSC would grant
us some seed money. At that time,
Sharif mentioned that he remembered
that Bapak had given the name SIHA.
That was important to me.
It seemed that there was no hope of any
seed money from WSC, but Sharif gave
us a suggestion that I took to heart. He
suggested that we fund SIHA by asking
the doctors for the money as doctors
were among the highest paid profession-
als. In this way, SIHA would become
self-funding. It seemed like a good idea,
so we devised the pledge system that we
are currently using.
SIHA had to start from scratch with
nothing but ourselves to bring about an
international association of health profes-
sionals. Fortunately, we found that ordi-
nary Subud members were also inter-
ested in health and wanted to support us.
So we incorporated a dual membership
base - professional members and associ-
ate members - meaning that anyone can
participate in SIHA.
What were some of the main ideas in
SIHA? Is there a document spelling out
its principles?
The principles you can get off the web-
site too. There is a mission statement…
The mission of the Subud International
Health Association (SIHA) is to promote
the attainment of true human health by
providing opportunities to share our ex-
perience and together receive a way for
the content of healthcare to be touched,
guided, and enlightened by the Power of
Almighty God through the latihan keji-
waan of Subud. In furtherance of this
mission, SIHA aims to:
• Promote mutual support, co-operation,
networking, and intra-and cross-
disciplinary communication,
among Subud members who are ac-
tive healthcare practitioners.
• Make healthcare information and ex-
pertise available to Subud members
and others.
• Promote and co-ordinate medical aid
and other health related projects.
• Provide mentoring services.
• Provide a resource directory
• Encourage self-reliance in health
through education.
There was certainly a need to support
health care professionals as well as mem-
bers in need. At the time, I was working
in a hospital environment and felt how
intensely stressful that kind of work is.
Also, there was a need for the expertise
of health professionals to aid various
Subud projects already going. We had
discussed this with SDI Chair, Rosanna
Hille. SDI often found that they needed
a group to turn to that could provide
health expertise.
As time has gone by, we've explored all
kinds of possibilities. The SIHA Week-
end Retreats have been amazing and
have provided a space for personal de-
velopment.
We also explored a medical aid project.
We set up a relationship with an NGO
associated with US AID and were able to
obtain medicines (complete with all the
necessary paper work to bring medicines
into a given country). We distributed
about $40,000 worth of medicines, to
Africa and Cuba, and to Indonesia.
We also participated heavily in the be-
ginning of the Hospital Pavilion project
in Kalimantan.
Who were the leading lights at this
stage?
The original team was Maxwell Fraval,
Hermione Elliott, Hedley Bennett, Rich-
ard Salisbury, and myself. Rohanna
Salom joined later after Hedley stepped
down. Also Robyn Burke was a big sup-
porter as the Treasurer, before she passed
away.
The first idea from Sharif was that SIHA
would come under SICA as part of the
plan to use SICA as a large umbrella for
the activity of Subud members.
We negotiated extensively with Bachtiar
Lorot, then SICA Chair, but never found
a satisfactory working relationship with
SICA due to the structure of the Board of
Directors. The way SICA was set up or
envisioned at that time meant that no one
from SIHA could sit on SICA Board.
We felt the position of being under the
SICA Board would not give us the auton-
omy that would empower our forward
momentum.
We felt we would be able to move faster
if we stayed on our own feet: And we
seemed to move pretty fast. Soon after
Spokane, we set up the periodical Reso-
nance as our publication.
Resonance was developed by Hermione
and myself. Then after a point, Hermione
took over the production and has done a
superb job. We wanted to see a publica-
tion about health where we could include
latihan experiences.

That was the main point - include the
latihan and be free to talk about health
from the perspective of the latihan. Reso-
nance has always been very well re-
ceived and has helped us to raise money
for SIHA as well as to build our profile.
During that period of time, we also set up
two bank accounts, one in the USA and
one in England. We established a mem-
bership base and created a membership
directory. We set up a website. We held
weekend retreats in England and the
USA. We funded ourselves and our pro-
jects. We asked for nothing and only
brought our service to congresses in the
form of workshops and healthcare.
How did things develop?
Somewhere around the 3rd year, Sharif
agreed that we could stand on our own
and report directly to WSC.
But then came the World Congress in
Bali. We had done extensive work for the
World Congress which was planned for
Kalimantan, putting together a health
care team, working on the Hospital Pavil-
ion, working with the local healthcare
community in Palangkaraya.
When the Congress moved to Bali, for
various reasons at the last minute several
members of our team were unable to at-
tend the Bali World Congress. It hap-
pened that Rohanna Salom was the only
SIHA Steering Committee member able
to go. With no team present, we didn't
make any progress there.
The following year, there was a WSC
meeting at Spink Hill in England. And
the SIHA Steering Committee regrouped
and made a presentation to the new WSC
asking to be officially recognized and
approved – essentially to correct the error
of omission in the minutes of the Spo-
kane Congress. The new members of the
Council knew nothing of what had gone
before so it was like starting from scratch
to get them to be aware of our existence.
There seemed to be no interest in SIHA.
Worse - there was a great resistance
Why do you think?
One reason was a fear of “if we let you
in, we’ll have to let in everyone. The
plumbers, the golfers, the musicians, etc.
Everyone will want a place and the WSC
will get overwhelmed. It can’t be done”.
Then some individuals had a fear that if
SIHA was part of WSA, WSA might be
exposed to law suits for malpractice or
something like that.
Latidjah entertained the crowd with a hula
while waiting for the WSA/SIHA agreement to
be signed.
Then, I do believe some individuals also
had a strong fear of, or prejudice against,
alternative therapies – regarding it as
“mixing”, - and resisted SIHA for that
reason because SIHA has a very inclu-
sive membership base.
Personally, I felt that the fear that many
groups would request recognition by
WSA was unfounded. In 8 years no one
has asked to join WSA but SIHA.
The one step forward in Spink Hill was
that the WSC appointed a working party
to look into the situation over the coming
year. But that also became difficult. We
were so eager. And the Working Party
experienced large communication gaps.
After five years of working to establish
our formal link with WSA, it was becom-
ing difficult for us to remain patient.
After Spink Hill was the WSC meeting
Brazil. What happened there?
Suddenly just before the Brazil meeting -
as there was a need to make a report to
the WSC – the Working Party stirred. So,
I went to Brazil to give another presenta-
tion about SIHA to the World Subud
Council.
This was truly one of the most difficult
moments for me. I was the only SIHA
Steering Committee member present.
Upon arriving in Brazil, I was told that
there was much opposition to SIHA on
the Council. It took courage to give my
presentation which was actually just
scheduled to be a part of the Working
Group report. The official title of the
Working Group referred to supporting
Special Interest Groups. It just happened
that SIHA was the only Special Interest
Group that wanted consideration. I was
only allowed a few minutes to give my
little talk on SIHA.
Some discussion followed and I was ba-
sically told that it was recommended that
SIHA not be allowed to be part of WSC
as we could potentially bring criminal
charges against WSA due to our field of
work (healthcare). This was something
that I had never expected to hear. The
working party Chair wisely pulled the
proposal off the table in Brazil. Some-
time later they must have officially voted
to reject us, maybe in the next WSC
meeting in Kalimantan. I’m not sure of
the details because no one was informing
me of the developments after that.
So the WSC voted not to accept the
SIHA proposal. At that point I nearly
gave up. I just said to myself – “well, if
they don't want SIHA, that's the decision.
We have to abide by their decisions. The
only thing is to surrender it all to Al-
mighty God. So, now, I will just go and
entertain myself with some fun to relieve
the stress”.
Actually, I took up the Hawaiian Hula
which turns out to be an excellent form
of exercise and has been very good for
my health. The SIHA Steering Commit-
tee continued to work on our various
projects and to prepare for our activities
at the coming World Congress in Aus-
tria.
What changed before Innsbruck?
Suddenly about 6 months before Inns-
bruck, I got an email from Laurencio
Young, the ISC Chair, saying that the
WSC had reversed their decision. There
was no explanation given.
Here's another strange twist. He sent me
a copy of the proposal between SIHA
and WSC. He told me to print it out and
bring 3 copies to Innsbruck for the sign-
ing of the agreement. So I did. I saw that
it was the same proposal that we had
originally submitted to WSC. But this is
what he sent to me. “Oh, joy!”, I
thought.
In Innsbruck, Laurencio was supposed to
sign the proposal on behalf of ISC/WSA
and ISC had done all the work to sched-
ule the signing event. But then, Lauren-
cio did not turn up for the signing. So I
ended up giving the copies of the SIHA
proposal I had brought to Daniel
Cheifetz, WSA Chair, who graciously
stepped in to represent WSA. Daniel
temporarily leaves the room to go and try
to find Laurencio, taking the proposal
copies with him, but when he comes
back (without Laurencio) - he says to

me – “this is not the proposal that WSC
agreed to”.
That must have been a shock!
I said, “You mean there is another pro
posal? If so, I've never seen it. Nor has
anyone on the SIHA Steering Commit-
tee!”
But he suggested we have a signing any-
way. His idea was that we would sign the
papers I brought with the understanding
that it was not the real agreement.
I said, “I want to have a genuine signing.
I can't possibly sign something I've never
read.”
So, Oliver Haitzmann, the Zone 4 Repre-
sentative, comes to save the moment. He
gets his lap top up and running and
checks if he has a copy of the new pro-
posal that WSC wrote.
Drama!
He finds it, and I start reading fast be-
cause by now the people who came to the
signing have been sitting in chairs wait-
ing for over an hour and it's late for din-
ner time.
And nothing is more important than
dinner.
While Daniel had been out of the room,
the audience was getting restless so they
asked for a Hula demonstration as some
of them had seen the Hula performance
that my daughter, Laura, and I gave at
our National Subud USA Congress.
Thank God you had been studying it.
Yes. So we had a Hula demonstration
while waiting for everything to come
together. Crazy, or what?
Just as well you had your grass skirt
with you.
So in the end, I thought that the docu-
ment looked reasonable and I agreed to
sign. Oliver said he would deliver a copy
in print ASAP and we met shortly after
the signing so that the entire SIHA Steer-
ing Committee could read it.
The Subud way is to read things
AFTER you’ve signed them.
I guess I missed that in the code book.
Anyway the signing got photographed.
And that seems to have said more to the
general membership than anything else.

ALL CHANGE!
Mairi Store, UK, recalls the history of
the International Almoners and writes
about the changes at World Congress
where the name was changed to the
Care Support Panel and Rayner Suther-
land of Canada was appointed as the
administrator with Garrett Thomson as
the chair…
Subud Britain Almoners must be one of
the oldest “organizations” still going in
Subud as they were formed in 1960 to
help our members suffering from extreme
financial hardship.
In 1973 they decided to extend their work
to our members overseas and so the Inter-
national Almoners were born.
For the first 20 years of its life, the Inter-
national Almoning work was very little,
probably because our brothers and sisters
overseas didn’t know of its existence.
Therefore it was easy to fund the Interna-
tional Almoning work from the British
Almoning fund.
However, by the early 1990s the Interna-
tional Almoners existence was becoming
more widely known and the international
work was growing until it reached 50%
or more of the Almoners work.
At this point the Subud Britain Almoners
felt that the funding of the International
Almoning work should not be funded by
British members alone, but the opportu-
nity to fund them should be open to all
Subud members worldwide.
Therefore as Subud Britain Almoners is a
sub-committee of Susila Dharma Britain,
who have in the past supported fund rais-
ing efforts for us, we appealed to Susila
Dharma International to fund the Interna-
tional Almoning work.
This they did for about four years until
they discovered their constitution did not
allow them to use funds for projects that
only supported Subud members.
At this point a meeting was set up be-
tween the then WSA and SDI chairs and
the Almoners and it was agreed that an
appeal for a capital fund of US $200,000
should be launched as one of Bapak’s
centenary projects, and in the meantime
MSF and ISC should be approached for
funding.
The appeal was launched at Subud Brit-
ain’s National Congress in 2000 and by
the time the same event rolled round in
2001 approximately US $10,000 had
been raised, 95% from Subud Britain
members. Since 1998 MSF have con-
tinuously supported us and since 2003.
ISC have also continuously supported us
and any shortfall has come from Subud
Britain’s Almoners fund.
In 2002 Jim Williams (International Al-
moner Co-ordinator) and I met with
WSC, the upshot of which was that a
working party was set up by WSC to look
into the whole matter of caring for our
members.
The working party was chaired by Julia
Hurd (then Zone 7 – N.America Zone
Rep and now ISC Secretary) and included
Peter Filippelli (then Chair of MSF),
Rosanna Hille (then Executive Chair of
SDI), Hamid da Silva (then Zone 3 –
Western Europe Rep) and Jim Williams.
In 2003 they proposed that WSC should
be responsible for caring for our members
worldwide. This proposal was accepted
by WSC at their meeting in Brazil in
2003.
The working party then went on to pro-
pose to World Congress in Innsbruck this
year that a Care Support Panel become a
new sub-committee of ISC under which
the International Almoners renamed the
International Assistance Group would
operate.
This proposal was also accepted. It was
realized by the working party that our
members sometimes need other more
practical help then what the helpers pro-
vide spiritually and the almoners provide
financially and, for example, if sometime
in the future a group was set up to care
for our elderly members somewhere in
the world, that too would come under the
Care Support Panel.
So now the new Care Support Panel is
being set up. Its first Chairperson will be
Garrett Thompson and its first Adminis-
trator will be Rayner Sutherland of Van-
couver, Canada, who is replacing Jim
Williams.
It is proposed that when possible the In-
ternational Assistance Group will be
transferred to Canada.
The Subud Britain Almoners will remain
just as they have always been, except that
I will be handing over the Secretary’s job
to Katherine Ahmad from the middle of
November to the end of the year.
I have held the job for over 20 years
which has been a huge privilege for me,
but now I feel it is the right time to hand
over and I wish Katherine and all the Al-
moners, both British and International all
the very best for the future.

Every Drop Counts
Ramadan has just started and I write look-
ing out onto the beautiful arid country of
Central Australia.
Reflecting on my time at the World Con-
gress – I recall long days as the outgoing
dewan of international helpers completed
their four year term and through the grace
of testing were able to hand on this duty to
a new dewan of eighteen helpers from
around the world.
It has been an amazing experience to travel
to so many Subud groups in Australasia
and be part of the World Subud Council.
The special gift I received was being part
of the team that produced the new book for
Subud members – a real experience of the
latihan working in the world.
Outside, despite the rising heat and lack of
rain, the country still flowers: yellow but-
ton daisies and bluebells. Last night a
flock of iridescent green budgerigars
flashed by on their way to roost.
There are three grape vines growing in the
shade of my veranda, nourished by a sim-
ple dripper system, which gives them a
few minutes of water every day. The vine
leaves are springing up everywhere, new
and green.
Among my new green vine leaves, despite
the hot winds and hungry birds, small
sprays of budding grapes are bursting out.
I have counted over twenty already.
A New Job
Now I have a new Subud job – towards the
end of Congress I went to the Susila
Dharma International Annual General
Meeting and was elected to the board. My
particular responsibility is to liaise with
the members, groups and projects in this
part of the world (Zone1/ Area 1/ Austral-
asia).
As a new member of the board, with a
background in community work, I am
spending time learning all I can about
Susila Dharma International. Refreshing
my memory about projects I have visited a
while ago, renewing my knowledge, en-
quiring into fresh projects and initiatives.
So much is happening in so many places
around the world.

 KALIMANTAN GOLD RAISES FUNDS
Murray Clapham, who recently retired as an
international helper, is the chairman of Kalimantan
Gold Corporation. I talked to him about the latest at
KGC…
Recently you announced a “Private Placement”, an
opportunity for people to invest in KGC. Has it been
successful?
We have actually had two private placements within the
last six months. In the first we raised approximately
C$500,000 and in the second just over C$1.5 million for a
grand total of C$2,000,000, of which more than three
quarters came from Subud members. In the last placement
there were 77 investors, an interesting number.
We in the mining team are most appreciative of this re-
markable response and show of support for the work in
Kalimantan. Prior to launching the two private place-
ments, I had written to a number of Subud supporters of
the exploration project explaining our view that we were
reaching an exciting and challenging stage.
I pointed out that the geology was looking good and some
of the external factors which might enable us to do the
development stages of the project in a beneficial way were in
place. Also our share price was, in spite of these factors, ex-
tremely low. World Congress followed and gave us an opportu-
nity to present all this to a wider audience.
This injection of money has increased Subud people’s equity
position and control at this juncture. If indeed we are fortunate
enough to make a major discovery in the next few months, our
hand will be much enhanced in negotiating the larger finance
packages or joint ventures we anticipate will be required.
This is important to us in seeking to ensure the project proceeds
according to an unfolding roadmap based on Bapak’s vision of a
just and sustainable mine benefiting all of mankind . So thanks
to you all for this support.
What was the purpose of the private placements? What will
you do with the money?
The prime purpose of the new funding is to drill deep holes in
the Baroi area of the concession. This will be the first time we
have ourselves drilled holes to depths of 500 and 600 meters.
The smaller rigs we have used in the past were not capable of
this depth. We are hoping to prove the existence of a large cop-
per porphyry deposit which might also contain silver, lead, zinc
and gold. Some of our earlier shallow holes and other explora-
tion techniques indicate the likelihood of this deposit at depth.
We will also drill more shallow holes and spend money on more
staff, stock promotion on the back of results, preparation for an
alternative listing of the stock probably in London, environ-
mental studies and an improved web site.
Do you have any messages for the Subud investors?
Yes I would like to say a few things. I wish them luck with the
investment, and without telling anyone what to do with their
money, I would like to ask them to act responsibly in the event
we are lucky and there is a chance to make a profit.
If we do make a good strike it opens the prospect of profit not
for the company, because it will be many more years and many
more stages before the company KGC can produce a profit, but
individual shareholders can sell shares and profit.

An unfolding roadmap based on Bapak’s vision of a just
and sustainable mine benefiting all of mankind.
I am asking for this responsibility because I personally believe
that any success we have in discovering the mineral wealth we
know from Bapak is to be found in Kalimantan is dependant on
many factors. Not least of which is the absence of greed in our
motivation at both the corporate and individual levels. As indi-
viduals we need to be conscious of the needs of charities, of
Subud, and especially the people of Kalimantan.
Hopefully we are now more mature in handling the material force.
This maturity within us seems to coincide with external changes,
such as certain new regulatory modifications within Indonesia,
and changes at the World Bank and other aid agencies which have
a new philosophy of investment in extractive industries. Now they
only support investment in this area if it also relieves poverty and
is sensitive to environmental issues.
All this in turn may point to our project moving toward the sort of
sustainable mining operation we desire. Also be aware there are
many hurdles to be overcome and stiff challenges ahead.
What is happening with the community development side of the
project?
This continues. Right now we are seeking to revise our memoran-
dum of understanding with the new Regional Government of
Central Kalimantan and UNCTAD.
We are also working with UNIDO on the mercury problem
amongst people and miners is the province.
On the bigger picture, we have moved away from direct aid and
are focusing on empowering people in the villages near our min-
ing concessions so they can forge relationships with the govern-
ment agencies and aid organizations that have the means to assist
them.
I would like to finish by thanking all those who work in the pro-
ject itself. We have had a wonderful, difficult, harmonious couple
of years and the inclusion of Rahman Connelly and Bardolf Paul
alongside Mansur Geiger and his field team has been a bless-
ing. There are many unsung heroes in our local staff not known to
Subud members so I would like to list just a few here: Didi, chief
geologist and now a Subud member; Anton our camp boss
/builder par excellence for 15 years; Selamat who is our logistical
support manager.

ROCHANAWATI
Alfathah Kerner wrote these reminis-
cences at a time when it was planned to
publish a little book of memoirs of
Mbakju after her death on January 23rd
(Idulfitri) 1966. Bapak said “No” to the
book, but gave permission for Alfathah to
write about Mbakju, because she had
been very near to her...
Mbakju Rochanawati was one of the most
understanding, dearest, sweetest and love-
liest persons I have met. I have many
happy memories of her. Most of all I re-
member her laughter, her joy, her humour
and always her prayers – her constant
prayers – “God – God – God”.
She told me : “You must always pray –
“God have mercy, God forgive me’ all the
time. When you are talking to people, in-
side you must pray – ‘God – God – God’.
You cannot do this now, but later you will.
I am always inside praying”.
She was so friendly and generous and gave
of herself without reservation. She never
let me leave without having a most deli-
cious Indonesian meal, sometimes even
cooking it herself – especially what I most
enjoyed. (I was made to feel completely at
home – as if I was one of her family).
She gave me much advice – but most of all
my memories are of her joy and laughter
and teasing and making jokes with me
about my ‘little worries and troubles’!.
She made me sing and dance with her chil-
dren and I remember with thankfulness
and gratitude the happy times I spent in
her home. She was sister and mother and
friend – all in one to me.
The last time I visited Cilandak was a few
months before she left us – she was differ-
ent then – more serious and quieter. She
said “You must not love Mbakju too much
– you must not love Bapak too much”. I
did not understand then, but I do now.
She said once “First love God, then your-
self, then your husband and then your fam-
ily. Even if you don’t like somebody in-
side, you must like them outside”.
“Do not be sorry for other people, because
then you are blaming God for their situa-
tion”
“Before 12 midnight you must pray ‘God
forgive me for any sins I have committed
today – for any sins committed in the past
– and for any sins I may commit in the
future”.
She always wanted to make people happy.
On one occasion while answering her let-
ters to the many members who wrote to
her, she said – “Now I must write this – I
must make her happy”.
When I was going through a difficult pe-
riod she wrote “You must thank God for
all the suffering and difficulties you have
gone through. I know you will become
happier and happier – more and more
patient, more and more humble. You will
surrender with joy and become more and
more understanding of the needs of other
people”. What a legacy she left me and all
of us in Subud.
When I first met Mbakju she told me “you
have a good heart and a good soul, only
you must get stronger” and she would take
me by the hand to where Bapak was and
sit with me awhile.
Always the night before I leave Cilandak
Mbakju would come to my room and sit
on my bed and talk to me and give me ad-
vice and comfort – because it was always
so difficult to leave Bapak and Ibu.
The last group latihan I had with Mbakju
was in Cilandak. There were just a few of
us and it was late in the evening. The lati-
han was quiet and only Mbakju was sing-
ing – so beautifully, and then there were
hundreds of stars falling all around me –
and when I related this experience to
Mbakju, she said simply, “There is a King
and there is a Queen”.
About the time of Mbakju’s death, I had a
dream/experience about her. I saw her
lying on her bed in her room and her fam-
ily was around her. The door opened and
Bapak entered the room. As Bapak ap-
proached her, she sat up in her bed. Bapak
kissed her on her forehead and Mbakju
leaned back and passed away, peacefully.
THE STORY OF SIHA

Of course the new proposal was terribly
flawed with a clause at the end that ne-
gated the whole agreement. Again Oliver
came to the rescue, promising to get the
the flawed clause removed.
At that point I was in a state of bewilder-
ment. Then a day or so later I had an
amazing and delightful latihan in which I
was assured that I had completed my task
to link SIHA with WSA. What a relief!
Truly - without the latihan and the help
from God, it would surely be completely
hopeless, but somehow, by the Grace of
God, things progress.
So we moved on to retest the SIHA Steer-
ing Committee and choose a new Coordi-
nator who is Maxwell Fraval.
As I said in the beginning - all the credit
goes to Bapak. If not for a sense of serv-
ing his work and feeling that he would be
happy to see SIHA in existence, I would
have died along the way easily.
And also to Ibu Rahayu - because she also
told me that SIHA was “OK”. And gave us
this message of encouragement…
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Your work is similar to an enterprise. Yet
this group is in the field of health, in har-
mony with the talent and capability of each
one, and is dedicated to alleviate the suf-
fering of mankind.
I hope that your talents, through sincerity,
may bear fruit. May God shower His
Blessings through the work, and may it
eventually be able to ease the suffering of
mankind.

 ADELIYAH RAEVICH
Sylvia des Tombe continues her series of
articles about Subud members in Mos-
cow. She writes...
Adeliya Raevich is one of the members of
the Subud group in Moscow who has
been opened the longest. I have known
her since 1992, when I first came to Rus-
sia with my Russian Club from the Ja-
karta International School. Adeliya is one
of the mainstays of the Moscow Subud
group…
How is it that you came to join Subud,
and how is it that you were ready when
the time came?
Since I was twelve (in 1973), I knew that
there was a man on this planet who had
something for me. I thought that he would
live in India, that he was somewhere in
that region. My belief in that was so strong
that I never doubted it; I never even asked
myself HOW this idea came into my mind
or why.
Whenever I came across a practice, I al-
ways compared what the practice was with
my inner knowledge of what this person
was to give me. If this didn’t coincide, if
there was no inner response to whatever I
came across, I said to myself: It’s not for
me.
Then, somewhere in 1990, I think it was in
the spring, my husband’s friends came
back from England. When they were
showing us photographs of pictures taken
in London, they showed us a picture of
some people, and they said, “These are our
Subud friends.”
Of course, my husband and I asked, “What
is ‘Subud?” because the word sounded
strange and interesting. Natasha explained
in a very simple way: “This is a group of
people who worship God.” Somehow, I
immediately knew: This is it! The feeling
was as if something promised had been
completed and fulfilled.
Natasha didn’t really say much to me
about Subud, and her explanations were
very simple, but she said that, if I was still
interested, she would let me know if some-
one from Subud came to Moscow.
One day she called me and said that a real
Subud person was in Moscow, on a busi-
ness trip. If I wanted to meet him, I could
come to their place for tea in the evening. I
remember that it was quite late when I
went there, and my husband suggested that
he should accompany me for safety rea-
sons. So the two of us arrived at Natasha’s
place, and there was Georges Ivanoff, the
first Subud member from the West whom I
had met.

We talked, and he spoke to my husband
and me about Subud. Again, the things
that he said were very simple, nothing
spectacular, nothing miraculous, but I was
completely convinced and aware that this
was the right thing, what I had been wait-
ing for for many, many years.
That very year my husband was working
at the Embassy of Britain as an interpreter,
and this was the first year ever that Em-
bassy employees were allowed to go to
England with their spouses for a holiday
that lasted a week.
We went to London around Christmas
time (1990), and of course Natasha gave
us phone numbers of Subud people in
London. We called them. We met a Subud
brother who spent a whole day with us,
taking us around the city.
Then, on the 23rd of December, I was
opened in the Subud House in central Lon-
don. This is where I met Istafiah Is’harc.
She was one of the women who opened
me, and later we became friends.
My opening was actually very strong. I felt
the latihan from the very first words that
the helper who was opening me said. I
think she was surprised, because, no
sooner had she opened her mouth than my
head lifted, which I now know means I am
standing in front of, facing the power of
God, and I am here to worship.
In my first latihan, during my opening, I
asked God to free me of some emotional
conflicts I was feeling at the time. In the
course of the latihan, I felt as if a bubble in
front of my chest burst open, and some-
thing left me.
After the latihan, Istafiah came up to me
and said, “In your latihan, you spoke to
God and asked for something, and He ful-
filled your wish.” I said, “Yes, that’s true.”
In a way, this was the proof for me that my
choice had been right and that Subud was
exactly what I had been waiting for.
Some people wait for miracles to happen
to them for years and years. Miracles like
that started in my first latihan. That was
the beginning.
Then, when I heard about Bapak (because,
in her explanations, Natasha hadn’t men-
tioned him), I knew he was the man about
whom I had been thinking when I was
twelve. Though I never met him in the
physical world, I always had a feeling that
there was a connection with him, since, in
a way, I had known about him for such a
long time.
Was there anything in your childhood,
in your early years, which might have
predisposed you to a more spiritual life
than was common in the Soviet Union?
Yes, I think there were a couple of
things.
One of my grandmothers was a Russian
Orthodox believer. She went to church
and practiced her religion as the church
advised people to do. I don’t know any-
thing about her inner attitude to God or
her faith.
The family story is like this: Grand-
mother had me baptized without my par-
ents knowing about it; since my father
was a diplomat, he might have had prob-
lems at work if it had been found out.
Even as a child, I had poor health.
Almost immediately, when I was bap-
tized, I became violently ill; I was vomit-
ing, and had an upset stomach and a high
temperature. Of course my mom sus-
pected that, in her absence, her mother
had taken me some place. My grand-
mother confessed that she had had me
baptized in the church. My parents were
very angry with her.
Then, when I was about five or six, my
grandmother took me to church with her
again. There, she took Communion,
something which she did from time to
time, and she made me do it, for the first
time in my life. I remember being very
scared, almost frozen with fright.
When we came back home, I was com-
pletely ill again—vomiting, with an up-
set stomach, a very high temperature—
exactly the same symptoms. The story
repeated itself: Grandmother told my
mum, and my parents were not at all
pleased.
This was my early experience with the
Church. My attitude after that was that it
was something very powerful and very
dangerous for me.
My faith originated in spite of these
negative experiences and my father’s
being a non-believer.
My father has always been interested in
philosophy and questions like how life
originated on Earth, why people are here,
how come this world is so well organized
and functions almost perfectly, what
death is, and what life is. I had heard him
talking about these matters all my life,
for as long as I could remember.

Since I loved him dearly, I tried to find the
answers to these questions to ease his bur-
den.
Therefore, as a child, I was already think-
ing about these things. He and I discussed
them for hours and hours. Of course I lis-
tened more than I talked, but I think the
“soil” was ready because of this.
My father worked for the United Nations
as a diplomat, and, when we were in New
York, where we lived for several years,
some of his American friends presented
him with a Bible in Russian.
In those years, this was forbidden in Rus-
sia. You couldn’t find it, and you couldn’t
buy it. So, this present was really a treas-
ure, and I was very interested in the book.
I read the four gospels, and I was very
impressed. I found so many answers to so
many of my questions that I became a be-
liever, myself, on a very basic level.
When I read a book, I have a tendency to
identify with what I read, and, when I was
reading about the life of Jesus, I actually
‘lived’ there with Him: I cried, I felt the
pain, the joy; His life became part of my
own life experience. Now I know that eve-
rything that can happen to a person in life
is there, in the Gospels.
That’s how I became a believer. Jesus was
alive, for me. When you have such experi-
ences, it changes you. You go through
some sort of transformation.
And then, when I learned about Subud, I
knew I had found the way I could worship
God.
The interesting thing is that, before I
joined Subud, I tried to go to church many
times, first as a teen-ager, and then as an
adult. But I never understood a word in the
service because it is conducted in Old
Church Slavonic, and I never knew when
to cross myself. I always looked at the old
ladies and simply copied their movements.
My going to church at that time was just
the shell, just the outer behavior; it didn’t
have any inner content.
I was opened at the end of December,
1990. I remember that I went to church in
February, 1991, and I spent three hours
there. In the church, I was in the state of
latihan. I understood every word of the
service. I crossed myself seconds before
the old ladies, and I knew exactly what
was going on; the whole service had ac-
quired a deep inner meaning.
Since that day, the Church is for me truly a
house of God. I am convinced and I am
absolutely sure that my awareness of this
is because I joined Subud. Before, I was
just going through the motions in church,
but now, thanks to Subud, I feel the spirit
of the Church when I am there.
It is like a paradox: on the one hand,
Subud gave me the form for individual
worship, but on the other, my being part of
Subud planted spirit into my church ex-
periences, so it has become alive for me.
Subud has broadened my life: I can go to
church now and feel the presence of God
there, and I can also do the latihan. My
spiritual life has finally acquired unity of
form and spirit.

THE PASSING
OF
HAMID CAMP
Hamid’s son, Raymard writes…
Hamid Hamilton Camp passed away at
around 9:30 PM on Oct 2nd 2005 at his
home. The doctors were not 100% sure but
it looks like a heart attack.
The family is taking a few days to decide
the next steps and then a notice will be
sent out. I know he is happy now as he is
back with his true love and soul mate my
mother Rasjadah. God bless him and them
both.”

Dear Hamid’s family and Sisters and
Brothers,
The family of Bapak mourn the death of
Hamid, who will be remembered by many
as a true Subud brother.
We pray that his soul goes swiftly to his
rightful place….
He was a funny, friendly man and he
wrote the best songs yet about Subud.
