Music Appreciation
lectures
Monday mornings with
Matthew Taylor at
Blackheath Halls A Musical Homage to Shakespeare
by the Great Composers
This will be a foray into the music inspired by the plays and poetry of Shakespeare covering various
of his plays, with music from different epochs, including symphonies, tone poems, overtures,
incidental music, film music, opera and ballet. There is an A to Z of composers from Arne (The
Tempest) to Zemlinsky (Cymbeline) with a myriad of others in between including Berlioz, Elgar,
Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Nicolai, Schumann, Sibelius, Richard Strauss, and Verdi for starters.
It is to be a huge project and will consist of eleven instead of the usual ten lectures.
Please note: The two February lectures marked * will take place at Charlton House.
