New Energy mix ‐> Grid stability jeopardized
CIGRE‐IEC 2016 Colloquium on EHV and UHV
• Current situation:
Montréal, QC, Canada, May 9‐11, 2016
– Conventional power plants delivering energy & system
requirements
• Future development:
– Significant increase of energy from renewables
– Thermal and nuclear power plants retirements and shut down
due to new environmental policies
• Transmission system stability requirements:
– Frequency control i.e. inertia
– Voltage control i.e. reactive power
– Short circuit power

• High frequency drop in case of generation outage today
• In future the ROCOF (df/dt) will be higher and frequency deviation
also (df) since inertia reduced.
• Increase of inertia one of the key issues for the future

Future development of inertia – critical!
CIGRE‐IEC 2016 Colloquium on EHV and UHV
• Strong increase of renewables and phase out of classical power

generators:
• Significant decrease of system inertia, especially in times with high
renewable penetration
• Similar results for short circuit current and voltage conditions
• Actions necessary!

improvement
Montréal, QC, Canada, May 9‐11, 2016
• STATCOM with power intensive storage for short time
• Operations in 4 PQ‐quadrants +/‐50 Mvar and +/‐50 MW for app. 8s
• Significantly smaller footprint (app. 3000 m2 for 50 MVA)
• Significantly lower costs comparing with other technologies

Conclusions
CIGRE‐IEC 2016 Colloquium on EHV and UHV
• Future networks with increased renewables are facing challenges like
Montréal, QC, Canada, May 9‐11, 2016
lack of inertia
• MMC STATCOM with power intensive energy storage (also called SVC
PLUS Frequency Stabilizer) can actively support the grid
• Based on the proven technologies SVC PLUS and supercaps
• Frequency support is being 50,0
made by releasing active 49,8
power into the grid (for
49,6
frequency dips) or by taking
Frequency (Hz)
active power from the grid 49,4
SVC PLUS FS for

• Voltage support in steady state 49,0
and during disturbance 48,8
