documentation may also be submitted with the cover letter and resume. As required by law, any
interviews will be conducted during an open meeting of the Board of Trustees.
The Treasurer’s office is responsible for the collection of taxes, utility bills, permit fees, and any other
fees or payments owed to the Township, preparation of tax bills, property liens, bankruptcy filings and
implementing Board of Review and Tax Tribunal changes. The Treasurer is also responsible for
depositing, investing, and transferring funds to cover payments, reconciling and balancing bank
statements, distributing the collected funds from tax bills to all individual entities, assisting in
generating yearly budgets, twice monthly providing a complete financial report on all Township funds
to the Board of Trustees and filing revenue sharing reports and ensuring compliance with all Michigan
Department of Treasury laws and policies. The office must be staffed the entire time the municipal
office is open, and on the last day to pay taxes without penalty, the Treasurer’s Office is open extended
hours. Additionally, the Treasurer is a voting member of the Board of Trustees, which is made up of the
Supervisor, Treasurer, Clerk and four Trustees. The Board meets on the first and third Wednesday of
each month at 7:00 PM. The annual salary for 2019 is set at $48,699.00, paid in bi-weekly installments.
The position is considered fulltime and includes healthcare, life insurance and 401 defined contribution
retirement benefits.
A nominee must be a Fort Gratiot Township elector. An elector is defined as someone 18 years of age,
who is a U. S. citizen and has lived at least 30 days in the Township. Property ownership is not required.
Candidates with municipal, financial, public or private accounting experience are encouraged to apply.

office/. The Treasurer is considered a constitutional officer as provided for in Article VII, Section 18, of
the Michigan Constitution. To ensure that all township officials have the opportunity to learn what they
need to know to carry out their statutory duties as well as understand effective township management
practices, the Michigan Townships Association has identified core competencies that a Treasurer
should know and/or be skilled in to successfully perform the duties of the office.
The list should not be construed as all-inclusive; rather it should be considered an overview of the
knowledge and skill sets that an individual should possess with the knowledge that it will change over
time, adapting to legislation, legal issues, and other factors that impact township government and the
responsibilities of the elected official.
The core competencies address two goals: (1) to create a more-informed, better-educated cadre of
township officials who are more confident and competent in carrying out their roles and
responsibilities as leaders in their communities; and (2) to generate greater effectiveness on the part

Educational opportunities are available throughout the year, and the Board of Trustees encourages all
staff, appointed and elected officials to attend as often as possible. There are regional boards and
commissions, and meeting attendance, for which Fort Gratiot needs representation, including, but not
limited to, SEMCOG, St. Clair County Transportation Study Advisory Committee (SCCOTS), SCC Road
Commission, Blue Water Area Transit, and, specific to this appointment, the SCC Treasurers
Association. Fort Gratiot partners with the United Way of SCC, EDA, Blue Meets Green, Blue Water
Area Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Gratiot Business Association, MTA (Michigan Townships
Association) and the Michigan Municipal League (MML.) Officials should be available to attend all Fort
Gratiot sponsored events.
To continue in the position after November 20, 2020, the appointee will need to file as a candidate to
be elected Fort Gratiot Township Treasurer, be successful in the 2020 August Primary Election and be
elected in the 2020 November General Election. The 2020 November General Election will elect a
person to a four year term of office.
