Design the base slab of a 12 m diameter circular storage tank which is restin
as shown in the Fig. 1. Height of the tank above the base slab is 4 m includin
Wall thickness is 12 cm. Assume weight of filling material (non-liquid) = 15 kN

Base slab

For the purpose of analysis of the base slab, it may be assumed to be supported on fi
periphery and loaded with:
(i) a uniformly distributed factored load of 104.16 kN/m2 acting downward,
(ii) an upward load of 450.392 kN/m acting on the periphery of a concentric circle of
9 m diameter, and
(ii) a load of 38.069 kN/m acting downward at the outer periphery; this load will be dire
transmitted to the fictious supports hence, it will not induce any stresses in the slab

The loads are shown in Fig. 2. The edge moment due to monolithic connection with w
compared with the slab moments under laods, therefore, the base slab is treated as s
periphery.

Forces due to uniformly distributed load of 104.16 kN/m2

a = 6 m, w = 104.16 kN/m2

Radial moment, circumferential moment and shear force are calculated based on
equations of Case I i.e simply supported slab with UDL. Results are shown in
Table 1.
