Immigration:

The Mindset of Immigrants

Jasmin Bermudez
Did you know?

Four in half million U.S citizen children have at least one parent
that is undocumented.
Why this is important to me?
➢ Immigration is a big problem in the United States
➢ Many families are torn apart because of immigration
➢ They deserve better education opportunities
Thesis Statement and Reasons
The thought of being deported does change the mindset of immigrants because they
will be separated from their families, lack of education opportunities, and they also
have rights.

➢ Separation of families
➢ Lack of education opportunities
➢ Rights
Separation of Families

“Some of those children will leave the country with their parents, many others with
their relatives, and a small portion in Foster Care.”

(Cortez-Neavel 2016)
Lack of Education Opportunities

“In 1982, the supreme court in “Plyer V. Doe” decided that all students, regardless of
their immigration status, were guaranteed a K-12 education.”

(Pérez 2014)
Rights

“As an undocumented immigrant, you do have Constitutional Rights here in United

States and that has been said over and over in the courts, that they do have
Constitutional Rights”

(Menes 2017)
Service Learning Experience
➢ I volunteered at a Refugee Center
○ I helped clients in need with providing them canned food
○ On Wednesdays we serve people who come in lunch
○ Also helped restock shelves with canned foods
➢ Had friends help me create flyers to donate canned foods at the Refugee Center
➢ Hung up flyers at an Elementary school, local stores.
➢ I helped the Refugee Center and the families in need by posting the flyers

In Conclusion
The separation of families, the lack of educational opportunities, and rights will change
how immigrants will think about their future.

Immigrants come to the United States for a better life, to live the American Dream
but, they always will have the fear of being deported.
