Re: Notice of Proposed Amendment to Freshwater Wetlands Maps 2 of 6 in Kings
County and 4 of 10 in Queens County (Ridgewood Reservoir)
Dear Commissioner Lewandowski:
‘On February 20, 2018, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)
initiated the official amendment process to make changes to the NYS official Freshwater
Wetlands Maps for Queens County Map 4 to add several Class 1 wetlands of unusual
local importance.
Enclosed is a copy of the Decision and Order which finalizes the amendments for Kings
County Map 2 of 6 and Queens County Map 4 of 10. The amendments consist of the
addition of Freshwater Wetlands which are Class 1.
Enclosed is a map showing the final wetland boundaries. A copy of the final amended
map is available for inspection at the County, Town and Village Clerk's Offices affected
by this amendment, as well as at the DEC regional office at 47-40 21st Street, Long Island
City, NY 11101. |The wetland boundaries can be viewed online using the DEC
Environmental Resource Mapper (ERM) found at_www.dec.ny.gov/animals/38801.him|.
‘These maps show the approximate location of those wetlands protected by the NYS
Freshwater Wetlands Act.
The Freshwater Wetlands Act regulates certain activities occurring in a mapped wetland
or within 100 feet of the wetland boundary. A permit is required to conduct activities such
as filing, grading, draining, cutting vegetation, constructing roads or buildings, or other
related work. These types of activities typically have adverse impacts on wetlands and
the benefils they provide, such as moderating floods, keeping surface water clean, and
providing habitat. Other activities, like hunting and fishing, cutting a few trees for firewood,
and many farming activities are specifically exempt from regulation. Ifyou have questions.
about the permit process or the regulations, please contact the DEC’s regional Division
of Environmental Permits at 47-40 21% Street, Long Island City, NY 11101.

esacnnonWetlands and other waters of the U.S. are also protected by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers (ACOE) under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. DEC's wetland maps
should not be used to identify wetlands subject to jurisdiction by the Army Corps of
Engineers because DEC's maps do not show all those areas protected by the Corps.
Questions about the Section 404 Program should be directed to the ACOE New York
District Office at 26 Federal Plaza, New York, NY 10278.
We appreciate your support in protecting New York's valuable wetlands. For additional
