Auxiliary Relay:

Lock out Relay:

The lock out relay is used as auxiliary relay in power protection circuit, it is used as the backup
protection in any protection circuit. Nowadays in many substation it is used as back up protection of
main overcurrent protection relays (Directional or non-directional). It is mandatory in differential
protection.

There are number of normally open and normally closed contact in lock out relay. This type of relays can
be programmed to isolate faulty power equipment and initiating the stand up or back up replacement of
power equipment.

Relay can be latched to reset or commanded to trip.

As shown in schematic drawing the S1 contact is normally open contact, G and B are the connecting
point from where this relay can be connected with power circuit.

This relay is operate from bus voltage.

S2 is additional normally open contact use to reset lock out relay.

Lock out Relay is divided in 3 category based on reset method

 Manual Reset(shown in figure above)
 Electric Reset
 Self-Reset

Electric Reset:

Self-Reset:

Here K are the normally open relays.

Supervisory Trip Coil Relay:

This relay is upstream protection, basically monitoring the

 Trip circuit of Breaker

 Breaker Auxiliary contact supply

In case of any failure supervisory trip coil relay gave signal or alarm.

Working principle:

Supervisory Trip coil Relay trip contact for signal opto coupler used for normal/faulty indication

Breaker trip contact opto coupler monitoring continuously trip circuit contact of circuit breaker

The complete function of relay is based on two opto couplers, 1 is attached with trip coil circuit of circuit
breaker and other is connect to the signal system
This relay work on low secondary current injection method, here we are using 3 mili amperes method,

in 1st case, when it is pre closing Circuit breaker condition , current less
than 3 mA circulates (i.e 2 mA) in circuit , relay will not signal when TC
connect at 4 neither opto coupler at 1,2 not activated.

Relay is supervising but no action take place and green signal indicate
normal operation

in 2nd case, when breaker trip or close , and current of 3 mA circulates ,

Supervisory trip relay contact at 4 remain open and at 3 closed , also
due to normal operation the contact at 1,2 remain open so no
sensation/signal

Relay is supervising but no action take place and green signal indicate
normal operation

in case of failure of breaker contact closing, the 3 mA current

circulates and Relay contact moves to position 4 and contacts of
signal opto coupler at 1,2 is closed . This 1, 2 coupler is signal
generating coupler, whenever it activate that’s mean relay
activate on fault condition (failure of breaker contact closing)
