Spelling –ED and –ING words

1. Words ending with Consonant Vowel Consonant

ONE syllable: However…

Words ending in w, x, y, z do not follow this

ED: If the word ends in a CVC pattern, it gets a rule; simply add ED, or ING.
double consonant + ED.
Such as:
ED = RUB > rubbed, STOP > stopped
Snow > snowed,
ING: If the word ends in a CVC pattern, it gets
Box > boxing,
a double consonant + ING.
Play > playing
ING = HOP > hopping, SIT > sitting

TWO-syllable words: TWO-syllable words:

ED = If the stress is on the first syllable, the ED = If the stress is on the second syllable, the
word only gets one consonant + ED. word gets a double consonant + ED.

Visit > visited, Open > opened Refer > referred, Admit > admitted

ING = If the stress is on the first syllable, the ING = If the stress is on the second syllable,
word only gets one consonant + ING. the word gets a double consonant + ING.

Happen > happening, Enter > entering Begin > beginning, Permit > permitting

If the word ends in E, just add a D If the word ends in E, drop the E, add ING

Smile > smiled, Fine > fined Dance > dancing, Skate > skating

Consonant + Y Vowel + Y

ED: If the word ends in Y, and has a consonant ED = If the word ends in Y, and has a vowel
before it, change the Y to I and add ED. before it, simply add ED.

Study > studied, Marry > married Play > played, Stay > stayed

ING = If the word ends in Y, and has a ING = If the word ends in Y, and has a vowel
