Franki is the largest, oldest and most established specialist

geotechnical contractor in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Brief Company History

Franki Africa has been operating in Sub-Saharan Africa for more than 70 years.

Franki Africa was originally founded as a branch of Frankipile, a Belgium-based

international geotechnical company established in 1909. The Franki Piling Company
of South Africa was founded in 1946. In the many years that it has operated in Africa,
Franki has developed a powerful organizational culture. Three Core Values guide the
business:
ƒƒ RESPECT for colleagues, suppliers and customers,
ƒƒ PROFESSIONALISM – the application of skill and diligence in the delivery of all
our projects, and
ƒƒ INTEGRITY – consistently acting with honesty, fairness and positive intent in
everything that we do.
These Core Values remain key to the success of the organization.
In November 2013, Franki Africa was acquired by Keller, the world’s largest independent
geotechnical contractor renowned for providing technically advanced and cost-effective
geotechnical solutions anywhere in the world.
As part of the Keller Group, Franki Africa has access to many new technologies and
innovative products.

Technical Support
Franki Africa offers geotechnical solutions optimised for our client’s specific needs and
site conditions. Our full-service technical support includes geotechnical investigation
and interpretation through to the design and construction of piled foundation solutions,
lateral support, soil improvement, marine works and pipe-jacking. Our philosophy is to
provide optimised project solutions which are both cost effective and technically robust.
Our technical leadership and excellence is maintained through close collaboration with
experts in the Keller global network and the application of best practice technologies
and techniques to every project.

Our Services
Quality is our
Foundation
„„ Franki Africa offers a comprehensive range
of geotechnical and marine engineering services
including both design and construction for the
General Construction, Civil Engineering and
Mining Industries.
„„ Franki’s work in both commercial and
infrastructure projects is implemented to the
exacting standards required by its ISO 9001
and ISO 14001 accreditations and undertaken
safely with its OHSAS 18001 certification as
a priority in all its activities.
„„ Franki Africa is well established as
a technical leader and innovator in the
African region. The publication of their
4th Edition of “A Guide to Geotechnical
Engineering in Southern Africa” has
become a “text book” of Geotechnical
Engineering and depicts Franki’s
leading role in the professional and
teaching aspects of Geotechnics.

Franki Africa is proud

to be a part of the
Keller Group which has
successfully developed
many of the ground
engineering techniques
which are now widely
accepted in the
construction industry.
Piled Foundations

Piling involves the installation of structural elements to transfer

foundation loads through weak soils to stronger underlying ground.

Franki Africa offers an extensive range of pile types including:

ƒƒ Franki Driven Cast-in-Situ Piles
The Franki pile has been used extensively throughout Southern Africa for over
70 years and is still today one of the most popular pile types, due to its excellent
load/deflection performance.
ƒƒ Precast Piles
Precast piles can provide an economical solution, especially in deeper soil profiles.
ƒƒ Driven Tube Piles
This system can achieve considerable depths (> 60 meters in a suitable profile) and
is commonly used for river bridge foundations and in marine construction.
ƒƒAuger Piles
A feature of this pile is the flexibility of size (300 mm to 2 500 mm Ø), depth and
speed of installation under ideal conditions of non-collapsing, dry soils. Casings
may be used in difficult ground conditions.
ƒƒUnderslurry Piles
Commonly used where the soil profile is saturated, resulting in unstable side-wall
conditions.
ƒƒOscillator Piles
One of the most versatile pile types ideal for heavily loaded structures in adverse
soil conditions.
ƒƒContinuous Flight Auger (CFA) Piles
This piling system is fast and economical. It has no vibration and limited noise
levels associated with installation.
ƒƒ Franki Forum Bored Pile
This is a versatile pile type that is suited to sites that are congested, remote, have
limited headroom or uncertain ground conditions.
ƒƒ Full Displacement Screwpiles
This piling system is fast and economical. It has no vibration and limited noise
levels associated with it. It exhibits equivalent pile performance to a driven pile.
ƒƒ Rotapiles
This piling system has the ability to penetrate boulders, rock formations and
socketing into hard rock.
ƒƒ Micropiles
Micropiles can be installed in limited access and headroom conditions. They can
be installed with minimum disturbance to adjacent structures with the appropriate
installation methodology.
Lateral Support

Quality is our
Foundation

ƒƒSoil Nails
This system is an in-situ soil reinforcing technique used to stabilise slopes or excavations.
ƒƒ Post Stressed Anchors
Frequently used as tie backs to provide temporary or permanent lateral support to deep
excavations, unstable slopes or similar.
ƒƒ Franki Titan Anchors
An innovative and versatile soil anchor solution in soft or very difficult ground conditions,
where hole collapse renders conventional methods impractical.
ƒƒConcrete Soldier Piles
Provide support either as cantilever walls, braced or tie-back walls, or to act as structural
elements against which anchor forces are mobilised.
ƒƒContiguous and Secant Pile Walls
A row of concrete soldier piles installed to provide support either as cantilever walls or
tie-back walls.
ƒƒ Diaphragm Walls
A reinforced concrete wall constructed in the ground using underslurry techniques, with
widths of between 300 mm and 1 500 mm and to depths of 60 meters.
Our Services

ƒƒSteel Sheet Piles

Easiest and quickest way to form a retaining wall, in soft or loose saturated soil profiles.
ƒƒ Pre-Cast Concrete Sheet Piles
Pre-cast concrete sheets interlock using the tongue and groove methodology. This is an
alternative to steel sheet piles.
Other Services

"Quality is our Foundation" – Franki Africa prides itself in providing

the best geotechnical solution from our diverse range of products
which include almost all Geotechnical Engineering techniques. Other
focal points of our range are:

Ground Improvement
ƒƒ Dynamic Consolidation and Replacement
Insitu compaction of soils to depths of up to 12 m, using pounders to
impact high energy compaction.

ƒƒVibro Compaction and Stone Columns

The Vibro Replacement technique builds load bearing columns made
from gravel or crushed stones in cohesive soils and granular soils with
high fines content.

ƒƒ Jet Grouting
Mixing and partial replacement of the in-situ soil with cement slurry,
which involves the injection of cement slurry into the voids in the soil.

ƒƒ Deep Soil Mixing and Rigid Inclusions

In-situ strengthening of weak soils using binders or grouts to form
columns of improved soil.

Near Shore Marine Works

ƒƒ Franki’s services extend to the design and construction of all elements
of harbour work including dry docks, fixed or floating break-waters,
jetties and quays for all sizes of craft, the construction of mooring
dolphins and dredging or land reclamation.
ƒƒ Refurbishment of old marine structures is also undertaken.

Trenchless Technology
ƒƒ Installation of concrete culverts and pipes up to 3 000 mm in size in
almost any ground conditions.
ƒƒ It entails manual excavation from within the protective confines of
the jacking shield. The jacking shield is jacked forward using high
performance hydraulic jacks and once the shield has progressed far
enough forward, a concrete pipe is then lowered into position behind
the shield. Excavation and jacking continues until sufficient pipe sections
have been installed.
