Influence
Maps
Before creating the pirate I
decided researching for the
typical traits and environment
we suppose to distinguish
when seeing this unspecified
character. In doing so I created
an influence map Looking at;

Old People

An inflatable
Island as it is the utopian
place where the pirate is going
to go through extreme
measures to live in his dream
island.

3
Since the character is described
as too old and inflated. I
decided to do some research on
Deflated things
To connote the pirates age as
being ‘too old’.

absorbing everything I have
learnt through the research. I
started doing little sketches of
old people faces.

7
Learning from sketching faces I
was able to draw different faces
that I thought would look
interesting. The wrinkles
brought the character to life
and made something intriguing
to watch. Thus I decided to use
the wrinkles as an advantage,
making the wrinkles symbolise
something deflated which
would make the character look
‘too old’.

8
I started refining my drawings
and making the characters look
inflated before making them
deflated, to understand the
style I want to draw in.

Character
Design –
Pirates'
Accomplice
One of the obvious things that
can not be missed out when
talking about a pirate is the
parrot. Which was easy to
create as I used simple shapes
to make it look inflated, for
example an oval and a circle.

13
When finally understanding the
character I decided to give the
character a posture. For
example, I gave him a busted
leg as to show that he an
inflated pirate not just a
cartoon.
