Vehicular ad-hoc networks

Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) is the sub class of mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs)
which came into being by deploying the rules of MANETs in VANETs. We can say that
VANETs are the abrupt creation of wireless ad-hoc network for inter and intra vehicular data
communication. VANETs were first introducecd in 2002 by Federal Communication
Commission (FCC), where ad-hoc networks can be created and information can be propagated
among the cars. It was proposed that vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure
(V2I) will coexists at the same time in VANETs in order to provide road and human safety.
VANETs are a vital component of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) environment.
VANETs are also called as ITS by various researchers.

VANETs have a lot of applications from one hop to multi hop flooding of Cooperative
Awareness Messages (CAMs). Some of the major applications are listed below:

 Emergency Electronic Brake Lights (EEBL), which permits a driver or

(autonomous/driverless car) to response to cars braking in a scenario in which they are
obsucured by other mobile nodes.
 Platooning, in which two or more than two vehicles forms a group with their leading
vehicle by wirelessly receiving control information.
 Road Transportation Emergency Services, in which using VANET communication
alarms and safety messages are flooded in order to reduce latency and speed up the
rescue operations in order to save the lives of those who are injured.
 Traffic Information Systems, in which VANET communications are used to provide up
to date information and reports to a sattelite navigation system of a vehicle.
 Road Sevices, since highway transportations in future would fully be dependent on
wireless information so VANETs can be very helpful in order to share information
(hotels, motels , shops , restaurants, etc.) to the driver, or even share notifications of any
sale going on at the specific shop.
