For openers, last week’s
Riverside City College win over
San Bernardino Valley, 77-35,
was more than just a shootout
between Tigers’ QB Stone
Smartt and Wolverines’ QB Ar-
mando Herrera.
SBVC, an improving Ameri-
can Conference team, was try-
ing to go toe-to-toe with one of
California’s top National Con-
ference teams. Scoring 35
points with Herrera passing for
387 yards was cracking the
door for the Wolverines’ entry
into a possible National Confer-
ence entry.
It didn’t look good for the
Wolverines after Riverside
opened a quick 14-0 lead in the
opening minutes. But Jeff Proc-
tor returned a kickoff 100 yards
for one SBVC TD. Elijah Smith
then snagged a Herrera pass
for 98 yards to tie the score.
SBVC, improving under sec-
ond-year offensive guru Daniel
Algattas, made plenty of mis-
takes. A bad punt snap led to an
easy Riverside City College
touchdown. Later, when DT
Donovan Ferguson stopped
Smartt on a 3rd-and-1, thus
forcing an apparent punt, SBVC
was flagged for unsportsman-
like conduct.
The Tigers (3-1) went down to
score again.
In a return to the Bell Game
rivalry between the schools, the
first since 2011, Riverside
racked up 554 total yards.
Smartt was 15-of-17 for 290
yards, throwing four TD pass-
es, two to Quincy Wimbish,
while Joseph Griffin and Dun-
bar Fisher caught the others.
SBVC countered with 426
yards, the lion’s share coming
off Herrera’s marksmanship.
Riverside came into the game
ranked No. 2 in Southern Cali-
fornia National Division polls
(tied for seventh in State).
SBVC was ranked No. 1 in
the So Cal American Division
poll, unranked in statewide
polls.

Silverado 20 — Trailing 10-0,
Colby Grames snagged a 30-
yard TD pass to mount the
comeback. Scott caught a 40-
yard TD strike from Jonathan
Calderon, whose pass to Jesus
Guzman set up a 19-yard TD
run from Jordan Garcia-Frye.
A Scott interception set up
Grames’ 35-yard field goal with
three minutes left. Citrus Val-
ley came up with two intercep-
tions and a fumble recovery,
surrendering just over 200 total
yards.
Aquinas 31, Riverside Notre
Dame 17 — Lost amid the hard-
hitting, slashing running styles
of Andrew Kellstrom was an
Aquinas’ offensive line that de-
livered plenty of licks against
the Titans’ defense. In reality, it
was a hard-hitting game both
ways.
On the other side, Falcons’
defenders slowed up a team
scoring 45 points a game. Zyon
Mathis had a QB sack in the
late stages while Anthony Coop-
er capped the game with an in-
terception.
Yucaipa 49, San Gorgonio 32
— Both teams once played in
the Citrus Belt League, not to
mention both also playing in the
San Andreas League. The pre-
season finale favored the Citrus
Belt League T-Birds over the
San Andreas League Spartans,
who were faced with stopping
Yucaipa QB Keo McChesney.
Yucaipa, leading 35-6, got an
11-yard TD pass to Elijah Hall,
a 34-yarder to Jaylen Matthews,
a 10-yarder to David Whaley,
then another 19-yarder to Wha-
ley — all from QB Jordan Pa-
chot.
College results
Riverside 77, San Bernardino
Valley 35 — One of the hall-
marks of junior college football
is undisciplined play, especially
in the penalty flag column.
SBVC was flagged a dozen
times for 134 yards with River-
side City College adding 13 yel-
lows for 97 yards … Lots of big

rera interception 62 yards for a

14 loss to Mt. San Jacinto on Sept. 1.
In rolling up 35 points against Nation-
al Conference-ranked Riverside last
week, the Wolverines are proving
they can score against any team.
University of Redlands (2-0), bye —
Next week, the Bulldogs play at
Pomona-Pitzer College, opening the
season in the oldest conference in
California, the Southern California In-
tercollegiate Athletic Conference.

come up with any points in suf-
fering their first loss of 2018,
held to less than 200 total yards.

Volleyball’s local ‘showdown’

are some interesting twists.
How did Cal State San Marcos Brown
wind up with 6-foot-2 junior out-
side hitter Maddy Newcombe, the onetime Citrus Valley player
who transferred to Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World?
That name, Newcombe, shouldn’t be foreign to any volleyballer.
Danielle Newcombe played for a strong Redlands East Valley
High School squad, eventually landing at Cal State over three sea-
sons. Cousin Sonja Newcombe, a prep star at Rim of the World in
volleyball title town Lake Arrowhead, eventually surfaced as an
outside hitter at Oregon State.
Volleyball’s probably not a sport that jumps off the sports pages
at you — but it should. Lots of scholarship money goes out each
year to bunches of these kids. Talk about achievement.
All-league. All-CIF. College opportunities. Like softball and soc-
cer, water polo and baseball, parents are spending plenty of cash to
get their club-playing kids a shot at something special.
Some of that’s on display this weekend.
San Marcos (7-4, 3-0) plays the Lady Coyotes (11-1, 4-0) at Cous-
soulis Arena on Friday night (7 p.m.).
Let’s not forget that San Marcos reached last year’s CCAA tour-
nament quarterfinals, losing to Chico State. During the regular
season, the Lady Cougars (14-12, 11-6) upset eventual CCAA and
NCAA West Champion San Bernardino.
Lady Cougars’ coach Andrea Leonard, who has schemed that all
out, has also “raided” Cal State’s backyard for a handful of players.
Maddy Newcombe tops that list.
You figure that Newcombe has an insight into game planning of
Lady Coyotes’ coaches Kim Cherniss and Danny Scott.
Maddy Newcome played for the San Bernardino-based Rancho
Valley Volleyball Club — the club’s co-chairs are Cherniss and
Scott — over a 5-year span. That must’ve had an effect on her Rim
playing days when she was two-time San Andreas League MVP,
plus an All-CIF selection under legendary coach Linda Pattison.
She goes in the air (kills) and to the floor (digs) equally well,
racking up 10 double-doubles (kills-digs), blocking 78 shots, start-
ing all 52 matches for first-team All-CCAA honors as a sophomore
last season.
Newcombe, who might’ve been a nice addition to the Lady Coy-
otes’ lineup, was a 2016 CCAA second-teamer as a freshman.
That’s the secret of San Bernardino’s success. They not only
coach them at the youth level and send them off to various high
schools, but they bring a few back for the collegiate challenges.
So many over the years.
Alexis Cardoza, a Chino Hills product, was a CCAA Player of the
Week off a 32-kill effort against Stanislaus and Chico State on the
road, which helped propel the Lady Coyotes to No. 8 in a national
AVCA poll.
She’s 5-foot-11, having helped lead Chino Hills to four straight
Baseline League championships before showing up at Coussoulis.
Cherniss and Scott don’t ever forget defense. They had middle
blocker Samantha Middleborn, a two-time NCAA Player of the
Year out of Rialto a few years back.
These days, another middle, Hailey Jackson (Apple Valley Gran-
ite Hills), plus another REV product, outside hitter Sascha Do-
minique, are guarding the net. The pair delivers five kills a set.
Dominique, it should be noted, left REV for the NCAA Division 1
digs at Loyola-Marymount in L.A. She had a red-shirt in 2015,
played in 2016, then transferred back to Cal State.
All of which brings us to Friday night’s 7 p.m. showdown: I know,
I know. Menifee Heritage’s highly ranked football team will be
playing defending CIF champion Cajon right around the corner at
the same time.
You don’t get a chance to see volleyball matchups like this all
that often, though. It’ll be a nice little net-to-net duel between Mad-
dy Newcombe and the Cardoza-Jackson-Dominique trio at Cous-
soulis.
