WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Purpose By the end of the session, participants will:
 Gain a deeper understanding of how to engage students in a science-focused discourse.
 Review the scope and sequence for the upcoming year.
 Be prepared to teach the first unit of the new curriculum
Structure Inquiry-based investigations (small groups) and discussions (whole and small group)

12:40 pm-12:50 pm First  Pass out copies of the scope and sequence and the Unit 1 lesson sequence  Scope and

12:50 pm-1:25 pm First Day Lab  Participants perform a laboratory investigation (as students) designed for  Lab Handouts

tabs on what all the groups are doing and to model how to support student Supplies

 Facilitators manage the time so that participants clean up at the end.
1:25 pm – 1:40 pm Communication/  Revisit the 3-Year Academic Goal.
(15 min) Discourse in  Share the goal for Year 2.
Science  Within their groups, have participants practice communicating what they
learned in the lab (claim or explanation) orally. Their explanation must be
supported by evidence.
 Have groups share out with the whole class.
 The purpose of this activity is to have participants practice communicating
their explanations and to have them think about how they can improve
their students’ communication skills, both oral and written. They can also
share strategies that they currently use to improve their students’
communication skills (written and verbal). Tell participants that they will

receive more PD on communication throughout the year.
1:40 pm-1:50 pm Break  Inform participants of the time when you will start up again.

(10 min) Access &  Demonstrate how to connect to NGSS Curriculum SharePoint site from  Scope and
Sequence Blackboard/TSS. Sequence
 Give teachers time to look through the sequence and curriculum online.
 Allow teachers to ask questions regarding the curriculum and sequence.
3:20 pm – 3:25 pm Wrap Up  What is your greatest cause for concern as you prepare to do the first unit?
(5 min)  Homework: Do the first unit with an emphasis on constructing
explanations and email suggestions to science@bcps.k12.md.us.
 Did we reach our goals?
3:25 pm – 3:30 pm Survey  Pass out the survey so participants can complete it immediately.  PD Survey
(5 min)  Collect the surveys from participants as they leave.
3:30 pm – 4:00 pm Clean Up  Send an email to the Science Specialist with notes from the session,
(30 min) including teacher concerns, questions, suggestions from the activities, and
feedback from the parking lot.
 Take down posters (all feedback from the parking lot should be in the
email to the Science Specialist).
 Put used chart paper and ALL extra handouts in the recycling bins.
 Clean and pack up the lab materials the same way you received them.
o Check to make sure the flash-drive and empty binder clips are back
in the handouts box.
 Put the room back the way it was when you arrived.
 Return the cart with the materials to Room 7.
4:00 pm - 4:30pm Debrief  Meet in the pre-designated debriefing room.  Any notes you

 Share your thoughts on how it went and how we could do better next
time.
 Be ready to share one good thing and one concern.
