Unit’s Main Objective: Students will learn to read and notate music
Primary Repertoire: Simple melodies (Mary Had A Little Lamb, Hot Crossed Buns, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Bach Chorales, own compositions)
Monday

Main Obj: Students will notate
basic rhythm
Activity 1: Students will learn
how to notate quarter notes,
half notes, and whole notes.
Then, students will learn the
duration of each note.
Activity 2: Students will clap the
duration of the notes learned
and apply it to clapping the
repertoire piece. We will clap
together as a class, and then
students may individually
volunteer to show the class.

Main Obj: Students will define
and notate dynamic markings.
Activity 1: Listening to Haydn’s
‘Surprise’ Symphony on
YouTube, students will point
out dynamic differences they
hear.
Activity 2: We will learn or
review forte, piano, mezzo
piano, mezzo forte, crescendo,
decrescendo. We will
demonstrate dynamics learned
together as a class.

Tuesday
Main Obj: Students will learn to
notate rests.
Activity 1: Students will learn
how to notate quarter rests, half
rests, and whole rests. Then,
students will learn the duration
of each rest.
Activity 2: Individual students
may volunteer to write all of the
notation we have learned on
the smart board and create a
rhythm for the class. We will
then add rests to our repertoire
piece, and make sure to
observe the rests for their
duration.

Main Obj: Students will define
and notate accidentals.
Activity 1: We will have an “Up
or down” game.
We will show that sharps raise
the pitch and flats lower the
pitch using thumbs up and
down.
Activity 2: A series of notes will
be on the whiteboard and
classmates will tell a student to
either raise or lower the pitch,
thus, having them use a flat,
sharp, or natural.

Wednesday

Main Obj: Students will learn to
compose and perform their own
rhythms.
Activity 1: Students will create a
four measure rhythm
composition and trade it with a
partner in the class to learn.
They will perform it for each
other, and correct any mistakes
their partner may have.
Activity 2: The class will create
a composition on the smart
board that includes one note
from every student. (Every
student will volunteer a note.)
We will clap our composition
together as a class.

and G in bass clef
Activity 1: We will use the
projector to project a series of
excerpts including these key
signatures and decipher which
are in C, F, or G Major.
Activity 2: We will practice
writing the key signatures on
the staff on the SmartBoard
Activity 3: We will dictate our
repertoire on the board in the
key of C, F, or G Major.

Main Obj: Students will review
what they have already learned
about treble clef.
Activity 1: We will review the
lines and spaces in treble clef.
Then, individuals will come to
the smart board and point at
the correct pitch that their peers
suggest in treble clef.
Activity 2: The class will work
together to dictate our
repertoire piece in treble clef in
the key of C.

Activity 1: We will start by
learning or reviewing the lines
and spaces of the bass clef.
Then, individuals will come to
the smart board and point at
the correct pitch that their peers
suggest in bass clef.
Activity 2: The class will work
together to dictate our
repertoire piece an octave
lower in bass clef in the key of
C.

Activity 1: One student will
come to the board and notate
the repertoire for the class in

we have learned.

Then, the class will perform the
repertoire using solfege and
hand signs.
