PBA Legend Carmen Salvino Competing in PBA Tournament of Champions at Age 85

There seems to be no stopping PBA legend Carmen Salvino.
The 85-year old PBA Hall of Famer will compete in his 29th PBA
Tournament of Champions, extending his record as the oldest player to com-
pete in a Go Bowling! PBA Tour event.
PBA’s most famous showman is one of the few remaining links to the storied
tournament’s origin dating back to the inaugural event in 1962.
“I’m in shape and ready to go,” said the 17-time tour winner. “I’m working
out and doing a lot of bowling to get ready. My weight hasn’t changed in 63
years. I’m 195 (pounds) and haven’t fluctuated five pounds either side of that.”
Salvino began planning to bowl in the 2019 TOC after competing in last sea-
son’s PBA 60th Anniversary Classic in Indianapolis.
“People have no idea of how it feels to go into the locker room of one of the
great tournaments and see all the guys,” Salvino said. “For me, it goes beyond
bowling—just to be there with those guys is a thrill.”
The 1962 TOC was held at Play Bowl in Indianapolis and was actually
billed as the Indianapolis 500 Festival Tournament of Champions according to
the Indianapolis Star’s coverage of the tournament. It’s an often-overlooked
event because the tournament would not be held again for three years. In 1965,
Firestone began its landmark sponsorship, the classic moved to Bowlarama in
Akron, Ohio and then to AMF Riviera Lanes the following year where it
remained for 29 years.
The first TOC was a two-day event featuring 25 PBA Tour champions –
everyone who had won a title since the PBA’s formation four years earlier.
It was conducted immediately after the Indianapolis PBA Open, the final
regular event of the Tour season, which also was held at Play Bowl. Salvino
finished third in the inaugural tournament (his best finish in the classic). Joe
Joseph won with a two-game total of 480 pins followed by fellow
Michigan star Billy Golembiewski with 413 pins and Salvino with a 409
total.
“I’m an example of not letting your age stop you,” Salvino added. “I’m
looking forward to showing those young guns a thing or two.”
The Tournament of Champions stepladder finals will be televised live on FOX at
4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 10 and the Players Championship finals will air live
on FS1 on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. ET.
In addition to the PBA Playoffs race, the Tournament of Champions and Players
Championship will be the first tournaments to feature a $1 million bonus if a play-

For Allen, who is in his 20th year on tour, it was his first win
since the 2018 PBA Xtra Frame Maine Shootout and his first title
on television since winning the 2011 Dick Weber Playoffs.
“I’m no spring chicken anymore,” Allen said. “I hope I can con-
tinue a trend of being a late bloomer. At my age I know I don’t have
that many competitive years left so I’ll just enjoy the ride as long
as I can.”
Rash was trying for his second consecutive and 14th career win
after teaming with Matt Ogle to win the Mark Roth-Marshall
Holman Doubles Championship which aired on FS1.
In the second match, Troup, who was trying for his fourth career
title, finished with four strikes in a row to beat Michael Tang 228-
215 to advance to the semifinal match. Tang, the No. 3 qualifier for
the finals, was trying for his first career tour win.
Troup capitalized on open frames in the ninth and 10th by No. 5
qualifier Rhino Page, who was trying to win his seventh career
title, to win the opening match 198-186.
The 2019 Go Bowling! PBA Tour heads to Ohio for back-to-back
majors in February for the PBA Tournament of Champions from
AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn (Feb. 4-10) and the PBA Players
Championship at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl (Feb. 12-17). The
Tournament of Champions will air live on FOX at 4:30 p.m. ET on
Feb. 10 and the Players Championship will air live on FS1 at 1 p.m.
on Feb. 17.

Critical Stretch for Players in Young Go Bowling! PBA Tour Season
CHICAGO – With the 2019 Go Bowling! PBA Tour sea-
son barely a month old, players already find themselves
at a critical juncture in the PBA Playoffs race with two
majors back-to-back in February.
It got underway Feb. 4-10 at AMF Riviera Lanes in
Fairlawn, Ohio. It will be followed a week later by the
PBA Players Championship, Feb. 12-17, at Wayne
Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus, Ohio.
The Tournament of Champions stepladder finals will be
televised live on FOX at 4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 10
and the Players Championship finals will air live on FS1
on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. ET.
In addition to the PBA Playoffs race, the Tournament of
Champions and Players Championship will be the first
tournaments to feature a $1 million bonus if a player
bowls a 300 game in the title match of either stepladder
final. While there have been 26 televised 300 games in
the history of the PBA Tour, only two have been accom-
plished in the title match and neither of those took place
in a major championship.
The two other opportunities to win the $1 million 300
game bonus will come in the title matches of the live Go
Bowling! Indianapolis Open finals Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3
p.m. ET on FS1 and PBA World Championship that will
air as part of the PBA World Series of Bowling X in sub-
urban Detroit on March 21 at 8 p.m. ET.
In the upcoming majors stretch, four-time PBA Player
of the Year Jason Belmonte will again try to tie, and or
break, the record for most PBA major wins. The nine-
time majors champion made a run at the record in 2018
by finishing fourth in the Tournament of Champions and
second in the Players Championship when he lost to Tom
Smallwood, 259-239, in the title match. PBA Hall of
Famers Earl Anthony and Pete Weber share the record for
most major titles with 10. Weber also will bowl in both
events, trying to take sole possession of the record.

O’Grady of Rahway, N.J., made an incredible run to win
the 2018 title, coming all the way from a pre-tournament
qualifier to the stepladder finals where, as the No. 5 qual-
ifier, he won all four stepladder matches culminating with
a 207-193 title match win over Sweden’s Jesper Svensson
to win his first PBA Tour title.
Competition points earned in both majors will be valu-
able for players who are competing for 24 berths in the
inaugural PBA Playoffs. Players will continue to compile
points through the USBC Masters which concludes April
1. The preliminary rounds of the PBA Playoffs will be
held April 7-10 at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine,
which will air on FS1 throughout April and May with the
top four players returning to Portland to compete for a
$100,000 first prize – the richest in bowling – during the
live finals that will air over two days (June 1-2) on FOX.

Championships [NYTC], Monmouth County Howell
H.S. boys bowlers have never failed to qualify for the
Baker Playoffs. During that stretch, the Shore
Conference powerhouse has emerged with the title
four times [including yesterday’s win over Clifton],
finished second three times and third twice. The girls’
squad had an incredible run starting in 2007-08, win-
ning seven consecutive titles before dropping the
2014-15 final to champion Westwood in 2014-15.

Striking a new balance for scoring opportunities based on science and the individualized styles
of Present and Future bowlers
Significant BALL RULE CHANGES were adopted in 2018. The USBC Rule
Book, Chapter 8: Equipment Specifications, Section 7 Drilling Requirements.
The changes have created a lot of confusion. The USBC has modified some of
the changes to allow a phasing in of the full requirements for August 1, 2020.
What is in effect now (February 1, 2018)?
The rules effect the drilling of the ball and the use of the ball by the bowler.
The section of the rules covers two categories the holes (or indentations) drilled
into the ball and the balance of the ball that is required.
The looser more flexible standard is applicable now; however if a bowler
chooses to use the 2020 standard now that ball will not require modification to
be legal on or after the August 1, 2020 date.
Holes: There may be up to five holes drilled –one for each finger and thumb
for one hand. A bowler must be able to show that all five holes can be used
together, although he does not to use all five each delivery. If at any time he
does not use the thumb hole – that thumb hole is also considered the balance
hole.
One balance hole is permitted not to exceed 1 ¼” in diameter. Slugs and bowl-
ing tape are allowed in the balance hole but no interchangeable device. The bal-
ance hole must not intersect any gripping hole.
One vent hole per finger/thumb hole is allowed providing it is not more than
¼” diameter.
One mill hole for inspection is permitted and it is not to exceed 5/8” in diam-
eter and 1/8” in depth.
Balance: For all balls 10 pounds or more, four criteria are to be met with meas-
urements taken from the center of the grip.
No more than 3 ounces top/bottom weight.
No more than 1 ounces of left or right side wide.
No more than 1 ounce finger/thumb weight.
A ball used without any indentations or holes may not have more than one
ounce difference between any two halves of the ball.
What goes into effect for August 1, 2020?

the center of the palm area must be scribed or scored by a “+” sign (crosshair)
on the ball at that spot, and the bowler must have that spot covered by the palm
during each delivery.

permissible if balance requirements are met).
One vent hole per finger/thumb hole is allowed providing it is not more than
¼” diameter.

What about a bowler who sometimes uses the thumb hole and other times does
not?
The ball has to meet both specifications using the two different centers of the grip.

Who is going to enforce the rule? A tournament or league official may
inform a bowler to remove any ball from use until it is verified to be in com-
pliance with the standards.
If the ball is not removed or the bowler had prior knowledge of such, games
are subject to forfeiture or disqualification.
If the bowler had no prior knowledge of non-compliance, the prior scores stand
but the ball cannot be used again until it is in compliance.
What does this mean to a USBC league bowler?
League bowlers should check with the ball driller to see that the equipment
they use is in specification.
League bowlers purchasing new balls or redrilling a ball should demand a note
or receipt from the ball driller that the ball meets USBC eligibility based on the
August 1, 2018 standard or the August 1, 2020 standard. Any ball drilled and
given to a bowler out of spec that ball driller has a duty to inform the bowler that
it is out of spec.
What does it mean to Leagues?
Any bowler may bring it to the attention of a League Director that a bowler
appears to be using a suspect ball. If a majority of the League Officers at the ses-
sion want to have the ball checked, it should be checked immediately unless the
bowler asserts who the ball and that it was confirmed to be in specification. If your
ball is drilled by a competent professional ball driller, the bowler and League
should be relatively certain ball is within specs. Any ball drilled and given to a
bowler out of spec that ball driller has a duty to inform the bowler that it is out of
spec.
What does it mean to Tournaments?
It is advisable that the Tournament Director and entry form specify that
bowlers need to comply with the rule and the Tournament will randomly check
balls and have tournament officials assigned to see if balls appear to possibly
violate the current rule and should be immediately spot checked.
What do the rules mean for professional ball drillers or Pro Shops?
The professional ball driller and Pro Shops need to check each ball that is
drilled to be sure it is compliant for use as of August 1, 2018 and/or August 1,
2020. The major differences for 2020 are: simplifications to the static weight
measurements, no balance hole for a regular gripped bowler, and a center of grip
cross hair marking for two-handed bowlers. Two handed bowlers will need to
inform the driller if the two-tests are needed for ability to use the thumb hole as
well. The Pro Shop may put a disclaimer that if the bowler alters the ball from
its original drilling, the compliance needs to be redone.
Where is the center of grip?
The center between the two finger holes and the thumb hole.
For two-handed bowlers, the location on the ball surface of the center of the
palm when the two fingers are positioned in the finger holes.
If a two-handed bowler occasionally uses the thumb hole, the center of grip has
to be checked for compliance based on both conditions.
