RPH3
Point-on-wave synchronism relays
Optimising the closing/opening of a circuit breaker is vital when switching because random switching can
result in high transient overvoltages and/or high inrush currents. These transients generate stresses on all
substation and network equipment, leading to power quality degradation, accelerated ageing and
increased flashover risk.
The RPH3, associated with Alstom Grid circuit breakers, provides a reliable, advanced way to reduce these switching transients to acceptable levels.
Serving as a control unit, it delays the switching order – phase by phase – until the pre-defined switching time (depending on current/voltage
network instantaneous characteristics), reducing switching transients to the minimum. The RPH3 is a particularly important element when
switching large transformers, shunt reactors, capacitors and uncompensated lines.
