45. Starbucks is pretty much a household name. But like many of the most successful worldwide
brands, the coffee shop giant has been through its periods of supply chain pain. In fact, during 2007
and 2008, Starbucks leadership began to have serious doubts about the company’s ability to supply its
16,700 outlets. As in most commercial sectors at that time, sales were falling. At the same time
though, supply chain costs rose by more than $75 million. When the supply chain executive team
began investigating the rising costs and supply chain performance issues, they found that service was
indeed falling short of expectations. Findings included the following problems

 Fewer than 50% of outlet deliveries were arriving on time

 A number of poor outsourcing decisions had led to excessive 3PL expenses

 The supply chain had, (like those of many global organisations) evolved, rather than grown
by design, and had hence become unnecessarily complex

Questions:

a) What is 3PL? Mention the advantages and disadvantages of 3PL in Starbucks

b) Give suggestions on how to transform the existing complex logistics design to reduce the cost
and offer improved customer service

46. Pilot Chemical Company utilizes a variety of freight modes to globally transport product
to customers and between plants. They have branches in five locations. Most freight is liquid
bulk, trucked by independent carriers throughout the United States. The Company also relies
on rail and barge shipments, and uses ISO container shipments for imports/exports. While
Pilot Chemical has utilized the services of ChemLogix, LLC to manage freight payment and
automate billing since 2001, freight spend, two years ago, was not centrally controlled,
tracked or monitored. Logistics control, at that time, actually was distributed among the
plants, with each site operating essentially independently to each other. As there was no
system for mode comparison and limited carrier specificity, plants did things their own way,
unaware of how they may be impacting Pilot’s other plants. Lacking centralized control,
management relied on individual plants to provide data on freight costs. Updating data on a
regular basis proved difficult as manufacturing personnel were primarily focused on making
product, not data analysis. Without direct access or visibility to freight data at a corporate
level, management couldn’t accurately evaluate current and potential business operations. As
a result, the Company could not account for the cost-to-serve elements of individual
transactions. It could not determine if rising costs were a result of freight costs by carriers,
fuel surcharges, or, perhaps, a mix change of using LTL vs. other shipping modes. “We didn’t
have the technology to efficiently update load status and capture ongoing, itemized costs for
our logistics,” notes Mike Rohrbaugh, Supply Chain Manager, Pilot Chemical Company. “We
also didn’t have the resident expertise to effectively manage our logistics network.”
Questions:
a) What are the solutions that can be implemented to improve freight management and and
its customer service?
b) What IT solutions can be provided to integrate all the details of the five locations together?

47. Adani Logistics caters to the logistics needs of the country by offering its own multimodal links. It
provides integrated logistics solutions for movement of commodities. Towards its mission, Adani has
secured an all-India license to manage container train operations from Indian Railways. In order to
provide pan-India multi-modal logistics services, Adani Logistics has developed the facilities for
movement of goods in containers by train, road, and sea. The company is also developing logistic
parks for providing various ground facilities, including aggregation, warehousing, holding, inspection,
custom bonding, stuffing/de-stuffing of Export Import (EXIM) and domestic cargo, and
loading/unloading onto railway wagons.
Adani Logistics also offers comprehensive end-to-end. Logistics solutions for handling a wide range
of cargo including containers break bulk dry and liquid cargo, perishables and project cargo in the
form of full train load, full container load(FCL), and less than container load(LCL). Given the depth
and diversity of operations, Adani Logistics looked at a seamless solution to cater to their terminal
management operations and brings in a greater degree of integration with its shippers, liners, and
railways. It looked at a system that can streamline areas such as container re-handling, rake planning,
and formation besides an efficient track and trace facility.
Questions:

a) What should Adani Logistics do to streamline their end to end terminal management? Is it efficient
to outsource their operations to third party vendor? Give justification for your choice

b) Explain what is LCL & FCL and how is it used to transport bulk goods in an efficient and cheap
manner?

48. Shri Om Logistics was started by Mr Mukesh Chatwal in 1989 and has grown from a one truck
operation to a 150 tractor-trailer fleet serving shippers in western zone of India. Company serves the
automotive industry by providing inbound transportation to the assembly plants. It has strategic
alliance relationship with three large automakers and is the exclusive trucking company for a number
of auto suppliers. During recent past three years, he has witnessed increased competition. The other
logistics companies that provide rush deliveries have made significant inroads in the market where
just-in-time management system mandate minimal raw material inventories, guaranteed deliveries and
vendor penalties for late deliveries. The perplexing trend to Mr Chatwal is the growing vertical
integration of trucking companies into other logistics services. A number of other companies have
started warehousing divisions to provide sorting, kitting( putting pieces together to make up a kit), and
cross-docking (moving freight across a dock to a waiting truck). Other carriers are adding third party
logistics divisions to manage a shipper/receiver’s transportation and storage activities.

Finally a few trucking companies have started air carrier divisions, freight forwarding services and
logistics information services. He also recognizes that this vertical integration of trucking companies
is a result of customer demands. In addition, shippers are reducing number of vendors in
transportation suppliers, being used and asking the few vendors to provide a wider range of products
and value added services. After considerable thought, hr decides that only viable long term strategy
for Shri Om Logistics is to become a full service logistics provider. If current status of company is
continued , it will greatly impair the growth and profit potentials of the company. The only question
remaining for Mr Chatwal is what other logistics services are appropriate for the company in long
run?

Questions

a) Do you agree that logical strategic thrust for Mr Chatwal is to vertically integrate and provide
other logistics services? Why or why not?

b) Describe the analytical process you would use to evaluate alternative logistics services being
added to Mr Chatwal’s market offering.
49. Ford Motor Company, one of the world's largest automotive manufacturers, has worked with
Penske on several Six Sigma initiatives. As its lead logistics provider (LLP), Penske's quality team of
associates are trained in Six Sigma practices and work closely with Ford to streamline operations and
create and maintain a more centralized logistics network. Together, they uncovered several areas for
real cost savings as a result of reducing inbound carrier discrepancies, eliminating unnecessary
premium costs and reducing shipment overages. Plus, Penske implemented accountability procedures
and advanced logistics management technologies to gain more visibility of its overall supply network.
Today, Ford owns and produces automobiles under several major brands: Ford, Lincoln, Mercury,
Mazda, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo.

The new logistics program would establish a Penske Logistics Center that included the following core
functions: Network Design Optimization—implement a more efficient inbound materials strategy
through Origin Distribution Centers (ODCs)  Carrier and Premium Freight Management—manage
all carriers and logistics companies, while reducing premium freight costs  Information Technology
System Integration—achieve real-time visibility of supply chain shipments, schedules and orders 
Finance Management—improve freight bill payment, claim processing and resolution throughout the
supply chain

At the time, each of Ford's 20 North American assembly plants managed its own logistics operations.
A decentralized approach provided total control of logistics at the plant level, but presented costly
redundancies in materials handling and transportation. Suppliers and carriers currently operate under a
single set of transportation and distribution procedures, enabling better service throughout the supply
chain. The level of accountability established with Penske's Carrier Rating System has enabled Ford
to rid its distribution network of costly, ineffective carriers. With uniform technologies, ODCs are
able to monitor shipments, identify inefficiencies and address materials handling issues in a real-time
environment. Furthermore, logistics costs now enter the supply chain immediately.

Questions

a) Discuss the challenges faced by Ford Motor Company.

b) How the logistical operations for Ford Motor Company be consolidated?

c) What are the core functions in new logistical program?
