Overview
In this course we will explore Western art music written since Beethoven to the present day.

Required Texts
Hanning, Barbara Russano. Concise History of Western Music, 5th ed. NY: Norton, 2014 with Total
Access media resources.

Assignments and Examinations

There will be 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam. The midterm exam will test knowledge of
lectures and reading from Chapters 19 to 22; the final will contain material primarily, but not
exclusively, from Chapters 23 to 28. There will be a listening component to each quiz and exam.

Participation entails attending class regularly and being ready to contribute with questions or
comments for discussion. Chapter readings are to be completed by the day they are assigned. You
are responsible for material from lectures, discussions, films, reading assignments from the text,
and listening examples from the Anthology. In other words, if it goes on during class time, you will
want to pay attention. If you miss class for any reason, I strongly encourage you to get notes from a
classmate and or see me during office hours if you have any questions. Please note, email is the
official form of communication for USM, email questions will be answered during office hours only.
In preparation for the midterm and final, you will likely find the study materials at the W. W. Norton
website helpful: http://www.wwnorton.com/college/music/concise/

Grading
Quizzes 40% (4 @ 10% ea.)
Midterm 30% (20% exam + 10% listening)
Final 30% (20% exam + 10% listening)
