PROJECTS
5 MW plant set for Mildura
BELECTRIC Australia has received planning permission to construct a 5 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Mildura, Victoria.
BELECTRIC has developed the design of the Mildura Solar Power Plant 1, and will also build the plant.
Managing Director of BELECTRIC Australia Nir Dekel says “The planning permit is the first step toward implementing further solar projects
in Australia.”
“We thank the Mildura Council for its active co-operation and also Clean Technology Partners, which has successfully engaged with the network
operator for permission to connect.”
NEWS IN BRIEF

Second solar farm planned for Kerang

Gannawarra Shire Council has approved a planning application for a 30 MW solar PV farm in Kerang, Victoria.
The approval was granted to Albury-based energy company ECO for LIFE, which has developed several small-scale solar projects in the region.
This approval follows an announcement in August 2012, which detailed that contract discussions had commenced for the development of
another solar farm in Kerang, also 30 MW in capacity.
Construction of the $38 million solar farm is expected to commence in mid-2013, with an expected construction time frame of around
14 months.

Industry responds to solar multiplier phase-out

Ambient air temperature rating -40°C to 65°C,

The Federal Government’s decision to phase out the Solar Credits mechanism six months ahead of schedule came into effect on 1 January 2013.
The Solar Credits mechanism provided additional support for installations of small-scale solar PV by multiplying the number of certificates these
systems would usually create under the Renewable Energy Target.
According to the Government, phasing out the multiplier early struck the appropriate balance between easing upward pressure on electricity
prices and supporting households and suppliers who install solar PV. The overall reduction in electricity bills is estimated to be in the order of

installations in Australia. In fact, the current market dynamics ensures a high level of installations will continue, and will also encourage the uptake
of bigger and more efficient systems, rather than ‘quick-sell’ smaller installations.”
Nigel Morris, Director of SolarBusinessServices, commented “This move just creates the opportunity for mistakes, forces everyone to rush, and
creates a mini boom then an amplified slump; not helpful at all.”

Solar testing results
microinverters vs central inverters

The Renewable Energy Testing Initiative’s Darrell Wilson explains the latest results from solar inverter testing
at the Initiative’s Brisbane Technology Park. Each edition of Solar Australia features the latest results from
the Initiative’s solar analysis.

Recently, the Renewable Energy Testing from 13 November 2012

Testing Initiative (RETI) conducted several
SOLAR INDUSTRY UPDATE

observations of microinverters installed

alongside a central inverter of the same size,
both of which were connected with the same
panel brand and 1.5 kilowatts (kW) worth of
panels, installed under the same installation
conditions to exacting standards.

Day of full sun generation and

high solar irradiance
The microinverters have been shown
to perform best during the beginning and
end of the day, and outperform the central
inverters by approximately 5 per cent for the
entire day. However, as can be seen from the
graph at right, once the central inverter and
microinverters reach around 700 watts of alternating-current output power, the central inverter begins to produce slightly more power than the
microinverter through the peak part of the day.
Then as the day ends, the microinverter starts to outperform the central inverter, again at around the 700 w mark. The overall result means
that the two systems ‘balance out’ and very closely match each other at the end of the day; no significant advantage has been observed by
either model.

Testing from 5 November 2012

Day of low light, clouding and rain
The microinverters work well during
days of high solar irradiance; however, it
is during low light conditions that RETI
saw the biggest gains in performance from
microinverters against the traditional central
inverters.
As can be seen from the graph at right,
only during brief peaks in solar irradiance
did the central inverter rise above the
microinverters in power output; during the
majority of the day the microinverters were
outperforming the central inverters.

Day of big results? Testing from 5 October 2012

While there has been a lot of discussion

in the Australian solar industry about
emerging microinverter technologies,
and varying views about expectations of
performance, the expectation most touted
for the microinverter is the ability to work
Ultimate Solar Conduit Systems
better under shade conditions. RETI put this
to the test, and the results are in.
The graph right shows the result of
partial shading through an entire day of
full sun. During the beginning and end part
of the day, when the shadows were longest
across the panels, it can be seen that the
microinverters clearly outperformed the
central inverter by splitting the system into
its individual panels, and keeping the panels without shade operating at maximum output.
SOLAR INDUSTRY UPDATE

Conversely, the central inverter system was constricted by the long shadows and only able to produce power at the level of the least-performing
panel. The result shows the microinverters as the preferred system in shaded conditions, with microinverters producing a gain of approximately 7.5 per
cent over the central inverters for the day.
The graph from the day of testing shows more than one interesting result. The effect of bypass diodes working within the panels, and the stepped
effect it has on the graph, can clearly be seen – as can the microinverter’s ability to separate each panel and keep the overall system performing at a
higher efficiency. This kind of performance is what has been claimed by microinverter manufacturers, and from RETI’s shade test results seems to be
possible.

What the results mean:

»» Clear days – RETI’s initial results show that if the standby use from each unit’s totals is taken out, the central inverter is ahead by approximately
1 per cent
»» Cloudy low light days – these showed significant gains made by the microinverters over the traditional central inverter
»» Shading results – if a system has partial shade during the course of the day, microinverters have a distinct advantage.

Advantages and disadvantages

New electrical requirements recently put into place make central inverters more expensive to install, due to the added insulation protection
required within the roof space.
Low voltage segregation of microinverters on each solar panel means there is no high voltage direct-current running through the roof space.
Most microinverters are offering a 15–20 year limited warranty as a standard, while central inverters tend to have limited warranty of
between 5–10 years.
Central inverters have an LED display for simple monitoring of photovoltaic performance, with the capacity to have external monitoring incorporated
into the design, while microinverters have no simplified display and require an internet connection, and the data is generally stored at the server of the
inverter manufacturer.

Things to consider
These results were performed on two selected brands of central and microinverters. Results of similar testing may vary between different
manufacturers of both central and microinverters.

The latest from RETI

In the upcoming May 2013 edition of the magazine: in-depth commentary on RETI’s results from independent Australian
solar experts, including Professor John Bell of the Queensland University of Technology.
RETI has continued to build on its field testing program for solar, recently receiving a number of solar companies enquiring about the
testing including Gary Jubb, Sales Manager at ALEO Solar Australia, who inspected RETI’s facilities to observe ongoing results for
in-the-field data. Mr Jubb noted that monitoring of ALEO products has helped his company to demonstrate their daily performance
outcomes.
Scott Beesley, Photovoltaic Technical Support Oceania at Robert Bosch Australia, recently confirmed Bosch’s interest in taking part in
field testing, while Chi-Wan Park, Assistant Manager at Topsun, also visited the facility and commented that his company is
considering placing a polycrystalline and a monocrystalline product at RETI for ongoing monitoring.

Solar battery charging with About maximum power point tracking (MPPT)
The use of solar energy presents an inherent problem: there is only one voltage, and one corresponding current output,
from the solar modules that correspond to maximum power output.

THE COOLMAX SR MAXIMIZER This unique point – termed the maximum power point – is continuously changing as solar conditions vary during the
day. The power output of a solar panel varies almost directly with the amount of available sunlight, but the voltage and
current do not vary uniformly.
For example, as light levels are reduced, the current drops off much faster than the voltage until very low light levels are
reached. As a result, under low light conditions, the solar panel may actually be generating 16 volts of energy, while
