Clifton Boys, Mary Help Girls Romp

to Passaic County Titles
By Vince Albrecht
ELMWOOD PARK, NJ 01/18/19 – No repeat winners in this season’s
Passaic County Tournament as the Clifton boys ascended from last
year’s fifth place finish and the Mary Help girls from third place to grab
the titles. For both programs, the victories came in surprisingly easy
fashion: Clifton’s Mustangs galloped away from the pack with two
tremendous closing games to beat second place West Milford by 314
pins while Mary Help’s Blue Jays cruised past runner-up Wayne Hills by
235 pins.
As has been the case the previous two years, there was the additional
excitement of a near-perfect game. Wayne Valley senior Blake Fenske
delivered ten consecutive strikes from frame one, but his eleventh shot
was off his mark, leaving two pins, which he converted for his tourna-
ment high 288. Clifton senior Johann Gamo, vying for all-state recogni-
tion with his current Big North Conference [BNC] top average [229.0],
blistered Parkway Lanes’ maples with 734 [249-248-237] to come away
with the high series award. In addition to Gamo, three of his teammates
finished in the top ten, all rolling 598+. Paterson Charter entered for the
first time, while Hawthorne Christian and Manchester skipped the tour-
nament, leaving fourteen boys’ teams as entrants; the girls went from
nine squads to ten this year with the addition of Hawthorne.
