The 2012 student competition is underway with the new details and competition criteria
to be posted in August. Check the student zone for updates.

What if a school in my chapter wants to participate in the competition?

All interested school must register via the design competition registration page on the
student zone. Only student’s who register will get the FTP username and password to
upload final entries to the ASHRAE FTP site.

Explain the judging process.

Judging takes place on 3 levels.

Level 1 (Local): Once entries are submitted to the FTP site, the local chapters will
be notified they have a team registered in the competition. Student branch
entries should then evaluated by their local chapter. Chapter judges should use
the criteria available on the design competition section of the web as the basis
for their local judging. If schools have no chapter located in the vicinity of their
school, entries are assigned to the appropriate RVC for local judging. Only one
entry per chapter per category can be advanced to level 2, the regional level.

Even if you only have one entry, please evaluate it for content. All entries should
be quality entries. If entries are not selected by the local chapter for
advancement to Level 2, please notify the team of this decision with feedback. If
you choose to advance the entry to level 2, simply email the name of the school
category to your RVC copying your staff liaison Tarra Holman,
tholman@ashrae.org. You are to choose the best entry in each category to
advance. You must also select a rising star team; a team that does NOT qualify
for the next level, but is a quality entry from a school that hasn’t entered the
competition in 3 or more years.

Level 2 (Local): Level 2 of the competition is regionally judged by the Student

Activities RVC’s. Once local chapters have submitted their local design
competition winners, the regional judges will download the entries from the FTP
site and will judge all entries in a given region advancing the best entry in each
category to Level 3, the national competition. An email will be sent to the
national competition staff liaison with the winning level 3 names. If schools are
not chosen to advance to the national level, level 2 judges must notify the
schools and chapters of this decision. Feedback on entries should be provided to
each non selected team.

Level 3 (National): Level 3 of the competition takes place during a closed session
at the ASHRAE Annual Conference. Once all regional judges have submitted
their local design competition winners, the national judges will evaluate all
entries from across the US, Canada and International locations. First, second,
and third place entries along with a rising star will be selected for each category
and announced no later than August 5 annually. All awards will be presented
during the student program at the Winter Conference. First place winnings
include $2000, plaques and a free trip to the meeting for one team member. All
other awards include a free trip to the meeting for a team member and a plaque
presented to the team at the student program.

What’s the timeline?
