Krieger, Clifford. "Privacy Protections and Poor Data Collection Are Hurting Homeless
Obstacles in Trying to Help Homeless Veterans: Too Little Data, Too Much
The overall subject of the article was that the value of privacy is having a negative impact on the
sharing of data. Due to the need of privacy, it is near impossible to get the necessary information
that would help them help get veterans off the streets. The author of the article is Clifford
Krieger, a retired Air Force colonel, an author, and a member of the Lowell Continuum of Care
Homelessness Assistance coalition. He has the expertise over this topic because not only has he
done tours while he, himself, was in the military, but he also works with a local committee for
the Homelessness, and its due to this that he has experience with dealing with the data systems
not being allowed to share the information required that could help get a veteran off the street.
The purpose of the article was to call attention to the fact that the data systems can’t properly
share much needed information with one another due to privacy protection. The article was most
likely written for the general public since it is easy to read. The article provides real life
examples of how the protection of privacy has prevented him personally in his line of work from
getting the needed information to help a possible veteran in needed. The information could be
reliable since its given as a first-hand example, but with no references listed to back it up, it is
arguable about bit not being credible. The article is current, what with it having been written and
published within the last year or so. The writing style is easy to understand, and the “average
joe” would be able to read and understand the words written. This source in Opposing Viewpoints
Longman, Phillip. "Veterans in the United States Receive High-Quality Care." The US
The overall subject of the article is that the VA system as a whole outperforms the rest of the
health care system on practically every metric that health care quality experts can devise. Some
of the main points the author touches upon is that the VA has a nearly lifelong relationship with
their patients and they also don’t profit from their illness which helps to effectively treat their
patients for the illnesses they have, though the author does list some of the VA’s downfalls and
what needs to be done to better it. The author is Phillip Longman, and his qualifications come
from him having wrote a book that’s now in its third edition called, “Best Care Anywhere: Why
VA Health Care Would Be Better for Everyone”. He has expertise over this topic due to the
research he put in to writing his book. The source was written for the purpose of bringing
attention to the ways in which the health care systems can be bettered for both the general public
and veterans and their families. The intended audience was anyone who was interested in reading
it. Most likely the public, and this is known because its talking to the reader and is easily
support the evidence given. The information given is accurate due to the amount of outside
sources provided at the end. The article about two years old. The writing style is easy to
understand, and the average jow should be able to read it. The source is straightforward and uses
simple vocabulary, and if it uses less common terms, it defines or explains them right after. The
Veterans Affairs Medical Care.” Journal Of Traumatic Stress, vol. 24, no. 6, Dec.
The main topic for this article was the study of reintegration difficulties among a sampled group
of veterans. The main points of the article was a detailed description of the method and study
done and what the objectives were. There are multiple authors of this article, many of whom
work with the Minneapolis VA Healthcare system. The authors- Nina A. Sayer, Patricia Frazier,
Robert J. Orazem, Maureen Murdoch, Amy Gravely, Kathleen F. Carlson, Samuel Hintz, and
Siamak Noorbaloochi- have expertise over this topic because they are the ones to do the study
and many of them work with the VA healthcare system in Minneapolis. This was written with
the primary objective of the study being to describe the psychometric properties of a new
measure, the Military to Civilian Questionnaire, that would be used to assess the specific
community reintegration problem among combat veterans. The intended audience are those in
the scientific community, specifically those working in the veteran health care department, this is
obvious from the fact that this is the scientific report written based off of the study done. The
article provides a great deal of information on the study done, including the methods and
procedures used. It also includes data tables of measurements and the analyses drawn from the
overall study. The information is accurate due to the fact that it is a study and there is a long list
of references provided. It is about seven years old, having been written in 2011. The writing style
isn’t the easiest to understand considering it wasn’t written with the intent of the average person,

"Soldiers' Mental Health." Issues and Controversies, Infobase Learning, 11 May 2007.
The overall topic of the article is that there is been an increase in mental illnesses among
veterans, and some people don’t believe that the U.S. isn’t providing adequate mental health
services for them. Some of the main points made came from both the supporters of the current
services and those that oppose it, but overall it pointed out some of the main mental health
problems the returning veterans face as well as statistics and both sides reasonings. The article
was found in Issues and Controversies, so there is no author listed. The intent of the article was
to discuss the issues with veterans mental health and if the government was providing adequate
services to help assist them with it. The intended audience was probably students since it seems
to resemble an informative, research paper with how it gives an introduction to what’s been
going on and then a section for both arguments. It provides details about the statistics that have
been found on mental health with soldiers. There are graphs and tables to support the information
given as well. The information may be a bit outdated, having been written back in 2007, but the
information is accurate for that time, and could be verified with the sources and references listed.
The writing style is easy to understand, and with this having been written for students, the
average person should be able to read and understand it. The source was found in Issues &
Controversies.

The main topic of this article was finding if Veterans with Other-Than-Honorable discharges
have worse mental health then other veterans. The main points made are the methods and data
analysis of the study done, as well as the results that showed that veterans with OTH discharges
were younger and reported to have more physical and mental health problems than those with
honorable or general discharges. There were two authors for this study, Jack Tsai, with a Ph.D.
and Robert A. Rosenheck with an M.D. They have expertise over this topic because together
they have experience with the VA and Department of Psychiatry. The purpose of this was to
discover whether those with OTH discharges have worse mental health then those with
honorable or general discharges. The intended audience is the scientific community and those
working with veterans, this is recognized due to it being a report published of a study done on
veterans. The source provides a study conducted to see if OTH discharged veterans had worse
mental health then those with honorable or general discharge. It gives all the necessary parts of a
scientific report and even a table. There are also references provided at the end and it is a recent
article, having been published this year. The article isn’t hard to understand, but it was not
written with the “average joe” in mind. The article is the report of a study done, which makes it
more for the scientist community. The source of article is the Military Medicines found in the

The topic of this article is that the VA was lacking in staff and had problems with
mismanagement. The information provided includes a couple paragraphs explaining out the main
issues at the VHA as well as a brief description on why and how it should be reconstructed so
that it once again properly helps the veterans. The article was published by the Associated Press,
which is a news service. They have authority to write about this topic because they’re a news
service and it is their job to write about such things. The purpose or intent of this article was to
inform the readers about the VA’s problems being with mismanagement and not due to a lack of
resources. The intended audience was the general public since it was written by a news
service. The author provides a decent amount of information on the topic, going as far as to use
quotes and even a few statistics. The source is a bit outdated, having been published four or so
years ago, but it is decently accurate for the time period and it can provide details as to what
changes have recently been made to improve the VA.The author’s writing style is done in the
third person and is easy to understand. It was originally published by the Associated Press and
due to that being a news service, it is easily inferred that it was written so that the “average

"Veterans' Services." Issues and Controversies, Infobase Learning, 15 Aug. 2011. Accessed
7 Nov. 2018.
The overall subject of the article is whether or not veterans should be offered more benefits and
services. A lot of points that were brought up were past examples of how the government has
assisted veterans after major points in history. There were also supporters and opponents
arguments present, which allowed for the reader to hear both viewpoints. Due to this article
being found from Issues & Controversies, there was no listed author. The purpose of the article is
to provide both sides of the stories as to whether or not people should agree or disagree with
veterans being given all the benefits and services they have. The source was written to provide
two sides to a viewpoint, leading one to think that the intended audience was students looking to
write an informative research paper. The source provides a great deal of information, a good
portion of it being past examples of how the government has often offered such services and
benefits to the returning veterans. The article also lists a decent amount of resources used,
leading one to think that the information is accurate, though it is a bit old, having been last
updated in 2011. The article seems easy to understand, its written in a way a lot of articles are
and with it providing the type of information it does, it is probably made for high school
students. It has similarities to that of an informative paper. The article was found on Issues &
Controversies.
