THE WALL
Both centripetal and centrifugal forces
are at work today, all heading towards the
disintegration of our country.
The Chinese threat, real and imaginary,
is shown in their build up at the West
Philippine Sea and the influx of their
workers in our labor market.
Down South, the ISIS and other
phantom terrorists every now and then
make their explosive presence with
bombs detonated in crowded places, all
meant to sow fear and chaos which are
the usual hallmark of terrorism.
In Manila, our elected legislators were
for some time locking horns on budgetary
insertions called pork which the Supreme
Court had already ruled, unconstitutional
and illegal.
Add to this litany is the forthcoming
election, that season of the year when
Filipinos get polarized, heated up, or get
killed.
We are an archipelagic country, and
before colonization came in, we were as
divided as our islands that even the first
recorded battle fought by our ancestors
against a foreign invader, was on the
side, a struggle between local datus.
We are still at it, shown by a President
who justifies the presence of Chinese
workers as indicator of our lack of skilled
workers, to lawmakers having more
allocation than the rest of their ilk.
Meantime, coliform have invaded our

BSP WILL NOT REVERSE
TIGHTENING CYCLE: The Bang-
ko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is
not seen to immediately reverse its
tightening episode last year even if
inflation is expected to ease back to
the two to four percent as early as
February 2019. BSP Deputy Gover-
nor Diwa Guinigundo told reporters
at the induction of the 2019 Eco-
nomic Journalists Assn. (EJAP) that
monetary authorities still need to
assess the impact of the tightening
cycle wherein interest rates were
raised by 175 points to prevent in-
flation to spiral.
Inflation accelerated to 5.2% last
year from 2.9%in 2017 amid supply-
side shocks brought about by ele-
vated oil and food prices as well as
weak peso. It breached the upper
end of the two to four percent target
as early as March and peaked at
6.7 percent in September and Oc-
tober but has since eased to 5.1%

Department of Health (DOH)
Bicol warned the public
against flu, stressing that
the months of January until
March are considered flu sea-
sons. Flu could lead to death
and serious complications
among high-risk groups.
“Flu season is the time
where fever, cough, colds and
body pains are prevalent. It can
be caused by flu or other virus-
es spreading these rainy days.
It’s easier for these viruses to
spread since people just came
from close contacts during holi-
day gatherings,” said DOH Bi-
col family cluster head Dr. Rita
Mae Ang-Bon.
Studies suggest that rain and
humidity are key factors in the
spread of flu viruses. They sur-
vive longer when the weather is
moist since they can hang in the
air attached to water droplets.
“Flu is usually associated
with the rainy season since

people tend to stay closer to-
gether so it’s easier to pass on
the virus,” she added.
Ang-Bon said viral infec-
tions such as flu, cough and
colds need supportive treat-
ment since it cannot be treated
with antibiotics.
“Paracetamol can be taken
in case of fever. For cough
and colds, we advise to drink
lots of water and take a rest to
strengthen our bodies in fight-
ing infection,” she said.
However, flu can be serious
and deadly especially for per-

its microfinance clients and
their dependents this aca-
demic year 2019-2020.
Microfinance clients of
these institutions who are
at least three years in mem-
bership until May 2019 with
100% repayment rate and
90% attendance rate during
weekly center meetings may
have themselves or their
children take the national
qualifying exam on Febru-
ary 9, 2019. The scholarship
slots are also available for
those who are savers of the
institutions for at least five
years.
“Education is one the
social development efforts

ship slots for high school,
senior high school, and col-
lege. The senior high school
slots, however, are only al-
lotted for students who will
enroll at CARD-MRI De-
velopment Institute (CMDI)
in Bay, Laguna and Tagum,
Davao davao del Norte cam-
puses. All the slots are open
for the children of CARD
clients. Those clients who
intend to finish their school-
ing may also take the exam
for the Balik Eskwela pro-
gram.
Qualified high school
scholars will receive P3,000
yearly, senior high school
scholars at CMDI will re-
ceive P17,500 per year,
while college scholars will
receive P12,000 per year.
Every scholar will receive a
financial support for maxi-
mum of four years.

abroad. This is the very same
reason why Gloria Apiles
spent almost 14 years work-
ing in Hong Kong.
At the very young age,
Gloria decided to work in
Hong Kong after her com-
pany lost its financial stabil-
ity. “I supposed to stay and
work in the Philippines but
I am afraid I could not land
any good job because I did
not finish a college degree,”
said Gloria.
“So, I decided to fly to
Hong Kong and work as a
domestic helper. Working
abroad and of course the
kind of work is really hard.
Imagine living in a family
who are a total stranger. I
was also having a hard time
understanding their language
and culture. Good thing, I
am receiving a monthly sal-
ary that is enough to pay my
debts and support my fam-
ily,” she said.
Back in the Philippines,
Gloria has incurred lots of
debt because of the many
requirements and processing
fees she paid before she was
able to fly in Hong Kong.
Also, the idea of saving is
not yet in her vocabulary.
After two years, Gloria’s
contract was renewed. Prior
to the start of her second
contract, Gloria was granted
with home vacation. During
her stay, her mother advised
her to make an investment or
save money for the future.
