Dear students and parents

Year 10 Geography Field Work: Data collection for Controlled Assessment

in Colchester Town Centre Summer Term 2010

In order to meet the requirements for Unit 3 of the Geography GCSE, students are required to
carry out some field work in order to complete a small 2000-word Geography project. We
therefore propose to run a fieldwork data collection day on Friday 2nd July. This will involve
students working in small groups around Colchester town centre, either during a morning
session running from 9.10am to 12.35pm or an afternoon session from 1.00pm to 3.40pm. The
data collected will then form the basis of project work which will be submitted as 20% of their
GCSE grade.

In each case the students will have a number of tasks to complete which will involve them
walking around the town centre. Whilst three members of the Geography staff will be working
with them, there will be times when they will be expected to work in their small groups without
direct supervision. The students will be fully briefed about the work to be done and matters
relating to their safety in the town centre. They will know the location of a member of staff at all
times and will also be given a staff phone contact number. The two other members of staff will
be circulating around the town centre. Students will be reminded of the behaviour expected of
pupils of the school - any misconduct will be dealt with seriously and may prevent a student
taking part in a future school trip.

We hope that the students will find the experience a useful and interesting one, allowing them to
practise some practical enquiry skills and to test theories learnt in class regarding the structure of
urban environment.

We would be grateful if you could sign and return the form accompanying this letter to confirm
that you are happy for your son to work off the school premises for the allocated time slot.

Yours sincerely
