3.1.Cityscape
Edinburgh is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, draped across a
series of rocky hills overlooking the sea. It’s a town intimately
entwined with its landscape, with buildings and monuments perched
atop crags and overshadowed by cliffs. From the Old Town’s
picturesque jumble of medieval tenements piled high along the Royal
Mile, its turreted skyline strung between the black, bull-nosed Castle
Rock and the russet palisade of Salisbury Crags, to the New Town’s
neat grid of neoclassical respectability, the city offers a constantly
changing perspective.

3.2.Athens of the North

The Athens of the North, an 18th-century Edinburgh nickname
dreamed up by the great thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, is a
city of high culture and lofty ideals, of art and literature, philosophy
and science. It is here that each summer the world's biggest arts
festival rises, phoenix-like, from the ashes of last year's rave reviews
and broken box-office records to produce yet another string of
superlatives. And it is here, beneath the Greek temples of Calton Hill
– Edinburgh's acropolis – that the Scottish parliament sits again after
a 300-year absence.

3.3.Auld Reekie
Edinburgh is also known as Auld Reekie, a down-to-earth place that
flicks an impudent finger at the pretensions of the literati. Auld
Reekie is a city of loud, crowded pubs and decadent restaurants, late-
night drinking and all-night parties, beer-fuelled poets and foul-
mouthed comedians. It’s the city that tempted Robert Louis
Stevenson from his law lectures to explore the drinking dens and
lurid street life of the 19th-century Old Town. And it’s the city of
Beltane, the resurrected pagan May Day festival, where half-naked

Over the summer, the Edinburgh Festivals bring a wave of colour and
soaring excitement to the city. Seven spectacular festivals proudly

late June, July and August.

Attend a star-studded film premiere at the Edinburgh International

Film Festival and listen to top class live music when incredible

Festival launches, an unmissable opportunity to see awesome and

Edinburgh Military Tattoo brings an extravaganza of tradition,
ceremony and spectacle to Edinburgh Castle Esplanade while the

7.7.National Museum of Scotland

The Scottish National Gallery

In the heart of Edinburgh, the Scottish National Gallery boasts some

The largest monument to a writer in the world commemorating the
Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott. Built in the 19th century, it is one
of the most striking landmarks in the Edinburgh city skyline.

7.11.Palace of Holyroodhouse
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is The Queen's official residence in
Scotland. Every year, around the end of June, The Queen and the

Various areas of the Palace are open for public viewing, where visitors
can trace historical links through time and learn about its legendary
former inhabitants. Have a look at the State Apartments, including
the Throne Room and the Morning Drawing Room, where The Queen

and the Lord High Commissioner.

You can also take a look at Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers, where
she resided after her return from France in 1561, which offers a

7.12.The Queen’s Gallery
The Queen's Gallery, located in the Palace of Holyroodhouse, was
opened by Her Majesty The Queen in November 2002 as part of the
Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Now, it hosts a programme of changing exhibitions from the Royal

Collection. A worthwhile stop on a visit to the Royal Mile.

7.13.The Scottish Parliament

Edinburgh’s Old Town is home to Scotland’s thoroughly modern
Parliament building. Open to visitors Monday-Saturday, why not take

and if Parliament is in session, view proceedings from the public
gallery.
