1. SCOTTISH MAGIC

1.1.Monuments
Ancient monuments like this give you goosebumps...

Clan grave marker at Culloden

and contemporary ones inspire awe...

The Kelpies at Falkirk

1.1.Castles and modern buildings

Scottish castles abound, some well-preserved enough to live in,
others just stone ruins which are enigmatic reminders of Scotlands'
rich, complicated and battle-strewn history...

3
Eilean Donan Castle

while stunningly modern architecture is displayed right alongside

stately historical buildings in cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh...

2. Scotland's landscape

2.1.Nature
Scotland's landscape is so raw and majestic that it's literally
breathtaking, and you're surrounded by castles, ruins, traditions and
drama that are worthy of a place in the 'Game of Thrones' saga.

Sunset on the River Clyde

5
2.1,Animals
Even our animals and wildlife are special. Just look at this example of
our stunning, and adorable, Highland Cattle (or, as our family calls
them, the 'hairy cows')...

Highland cattle

Even that's not all!

Scotland has something for every sense to feast on, not just the
eyes.

There's the hearty food to delight your taste buds and fill your belly
and good Scotch whiskey which can be as varied as the land where it
was created, but is always unforgettable.

Stirring bagpipe music will reach right down into your soul, and set
your feet tapping too!

Traditional tartan fabrics, chunky Shetland wool sweaters, stunning

sunsets and cozy fireplaces will all warm your heart.

Let's not forget the unique Scottish sayings and phrases, thick Scots
accents, traditional names, diverse wildlife, myths, legends, stories
and traditions which make Scotland the incredible and unforgettable
experience that it is.

3. Interesting information

3.1.Cityscape
Edinburgh is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, draped across a
series of rocky hills overlooking the sea. It’s a town intimately
entwined with its landscape, with buildings and monuments perched
atop crags and overshadowed by cliffs. From the Old Town’s
picturesque jumble of medieval tenements piled high along the Royal
Mile, its turreted skyline strung between the black, bull-nosed Castle
Rock and the russet palisade of Salisbury Crags, to the New Town’s
neat grid of neoclassical respectability, the city offers a constantly
changing perspective.

3.2.Athens of the North

The Athens of the North, an 18th-century Edinburgh nickname
dreamed up by the great thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, is a
city of high culture and lofty ideals, of art and literature, philosophy
and science. It is here that each summer the world's biggest arts
festival rises, phoenix-like, from the ashes of last year's rave reviews
and broken box-office records to produce yet another string of
superlatives. And it is here, beneath the Greek temples of Calton Hill
– Edinburgh's acropolis – that the Scottish parliament sits again after
a 300-year absence.

3.3.Auld Reekie
Edinburgh is also known as Auld Reekie, a down-to-earth place that
flicks an impudent finger at the pretensions of the literati. Auld
Reekie is a city of loud, crowded pubs and decadent restaurants, late-
night drinking and all-night parties, beer-fuelled poets and foul-
mouthed comedians. It’s the city that tempted Robert Louis
Stevenson from his law lectures to explore the drinking dens and
lurid street life of the 19th-century Old Town. And it’s the city of
Beltane, the resurrected pagan May Day festival, where half-naked

7
revellers dance in the flickering firelight of bonfires beneath the stony
indifference of Calton Hill's pillared monuments.

3.4.Variety
Like a favourite book, Edinburgh is a city you’ll want to dip into again
and again, savouring each time a different experience – the castle
silhouetted against a blue spring sky with a yellow haze of daffodils
misting the slopes below the esplanade; stumbling out of a late-night
club into a summer dawn, with only the yawp of seagulls to break the
unexpected silence; heading for a cafe on a chill December morning
with the fog snagging the spires of the Old Town; and festival
fireworks crackling in the night sky as you stand, transfixed, amid the
crowds in Princes Street Gardens.

4. EVENTS IN EDINBURGH
No matter what time of year you visit Edinburgh, you're guaranteed
to find a great event or world-class festival to enjoy. Galleries and
museums host a variety of phenomenal exhibitions while the city's
event spaces pack their programmes with top names from comedy,
music, theatre, sport and more.

Edinburgh is famed for being the world's leading festival city - and it's
easy to see why. Spring brings the Edinburgh International Science
Festival and Edinburgh International Children's Festival, summer sees
seven more outstanding festivals flood the city's streets and venues
with colour and heart-thumping excitement, while the autumn nights
are illuminated by the Scottish International Storytelling Festival and
Edinburgh's winter festivals bring the year to a close in spectacular
style.

8
5. EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL

FESTIVAL AND SUMMER

FESTIVALS
Over the summer, the Edinburgh Festivals bring a wave of colour and
soaring excitement to the city. Seven spectacular festivals proudly
serve up the most incredible smorgasbord of culture you could ever
imagine, filling the city's performance venues and event spaces in
late June, July and August.

Attend a star-studded film premiere at the Edinburgh International

Film Festival and listen to top class live music when incredible
musicians from all over the world roll into town for the Edinburgh Jazz
& Blues Festival.

There'll barely be time to catch your breath before Edinburgh Art

Festival launches, an unmissable opportunity to see awesome and
thought-provoking visual works created by talented Scottish and
international artists.

And there's plenty more to get excited about come August. The Royal
Edinburgh Military Tattoo brings an extravaganza of tradition,
ceremony and spectacle to Edinburgh Castle Esplanade while the
Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe mean
that visitors and locals alike are well and truly spoilt for choice.
Choose from the incredible array of music, theatre, comedy, opera,
dance, circus, cabaret, musicals, spoken word, exhibitions, children's
shows and physical theatre.

And let's not forget about the Edinburgh International Book Festival
where you can join author readings, Q&As and talks covering all
types of literature. Most of the events take place in pleasant Charlotte
Square, set between the handsome Georgian buildings of Edinburgh's
New Town.
