Montcalm Panhandle
Community Fund awards 2010
grants to three recipients
The directors of the Montcalm Panhandle
Community Fund are very pleased to announce
that this year’s grant awards have been deter-
mined. For the first time in its history, the Mont-
calm Panhandle Community fund has awarded
grants to three separate applicants.
The first and largest grant this year was is-
sued to Maple Valley Township in the amount of
$1,785 to assist in upgrading radios for their fire
department. Certain changes are mandated for
these upgrades and the Panhandle fund was very
pleased to assist Maple Valley Township with
these upgrades. Pictured here are Dan Kain, Ma-
ple Valley Township Fire Chief, Kevin from Ch-
rouch Communications, and Fred C. Plath from
the Montcalm Panhandle Community Fund. The
fund directors were also pleased to make their

first award into Maple Valley Township since the
start of the fund. Maple Valley is a very important
part of the panhandle area and we hope to see
more interest from that part of the community
for this growing community fund.
A second award, in the amount of $760 was
given to the Village of Howard City to assist in
additional upgrades to recreational facilities in
Ensley Park. Thirdly, $455 was awarded to the
Howard City Lions Club to assist in bringing in
a mobile hearing test operation into the commu-
nity at next years Harvest Festival.
Each of these awards will have a positive im-
pact on the community and they represent the
growing legacy opportunities that a community
fund can provide. With the 2010 grant awards,
over $13,000 has been awarded since the funds
inception in the year 2000.

Winfield Township parks department, Sand Lake

Zellie’s Opry House welcomes Hawks and
Owls featuring Bruce Ling on Saturday, Oct.
30, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. with Zellie’s

addition to the Hawks and Owls concert, the
Zellie’s Opry House Band will entertain with a
pre-show.
“Hawks and Owls,” fronted by award-win-
ning musician Bruce Ling, also includes Becca
Lynn and Joe VanAcker. Hawks and Owls plays
a collection of old-time traditional fiddle tunes,
bluegrass, country, blues, Irish, and original
compositions on the fiddle, mandolin, guitar,
and stand-up bass.
Clean, tight instrumentation and vocals, in-
terwoven with the stories that accompany the
songs and tunes, provide a traditional style of
entertainment such as your grandfolks would
have enjoyed.
Ling educates his audiences on where this
old music came from, the origin of a song, or an
amusing bit of history about the performers and
events of the past. Ling’s understanding of the
evolution of traditional music is expressed in
Hawks and Owls’ performances, where the audi-
ence is treated to colorful facts about the home-
grown music of the 19th and early 20th centu-
ries in America, and the immigration of music
from the British Isles in those periods.
The Grand Rapids Press recognizes Ling as
“… a superb Appalachian style fiddler.” Hawks
and Owls, featuring Bruce Ling, has played a
variety of west Michigan venues, including the
legendary Wheatland Music Festival.

Ball Saturday, Nov. 6 at Shifter’s
of Alma from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Cost

ceeds go to help at-risk children

for approximately one third of
the operating budget for BBBS of
Gratiot and Montcalm Counties.
It is anticipated that 300 pa-

Tony Costanzo, with Roger All-
man serving as Master of Cer-
emonies.
The event will feature a
Thanksgiving-style dinner,
dance - music provided by Sound
Productions, live and silent auc-
tions, raffles and drawings. Also,
Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Gratiot and Montcalm Coun-
ties is a non-profit organization
that helps children in need reach
their potential through profes-
sionally supported, one-to-one
mentoring relationships with
volunteers.
This year’s event is extremely
important to the organization as
donations are down from what
was forecast in the budget. The
need for positive mentors for our
youth is greater than ever. The
funds will help match and sup-
port the relationships between
our Littles and our Bigs.

Big Prarie Township crime watch program continues

On Aug. 11, Big Prairie Township held its third Crime
Watch meeting, and surprise, we saw a large increase of
residents in attendance. Because of the increase of first
time attendees, Deputy Phil Green gave an overview of
the program.
The incident report from June 11 to Aug. 11 was given
by Deputy Green. For Big Prairie Township there were
53 calls for the State Police and 87 calls to the Sheriff’s
Department and a breakdown was given for those calls.
After this information was given, there were many ques-
tions asked regarding the meaning of these incident calls
and questions in general. Questions were also asked on
river patrol and the audience was informed that we have
a two year grant for extra river patrol. There was a lot of
good information, discussion and fellowship that went on
during this meeting.
U.S. Forest Service Enforcement Officer Ronnie
Etheridge was a guest speaker and explained federal land
regulation and had several different maps and brochures
with information. There was much discussion on this
subject. It was interesting to learn that on Federal Forest
Land that only road licensed motor vehicles were allowed
on the numbered trails, No ORV’s, or other unlicensed
motorized vehicles. You can recognize the trails by the
brown number plate.
Jeff Ginn, Michigan Conservation Officer was also
present. He told us about how he shares this area with
Mike Wells of Hesperia, and what his duties are. Officer
Ginn said any questions can be directed to the “Report All
Poaching Line” at 1-800-293-7800 or go to their website.
They will answer any questions anyone may have.
Big Prairie Township Trustees Mary Anderson and
Janet Westfield, who are coordinating this program want
all the residents of the township to know that this pro-
gram is for the residents who are concerned about the
area and who want to be informed about what is going
on in the township. Those who were in attendance at this
meeting were surprised at the number of incidents for the
time frame that was given. Now they are informed of what
is actually going on in the township. This program has a
lot to offer and is more than a crime watch program.
The next Crime Watch meeting will be a tour of the
new Newaygo County Jail, meeting at the new jail in
White Cloud at 6:30 p.m.

$125,000 per year, for five
years. Volunteers met Oct. 1st
to discuss past successes and
future goals.
“Our greatest successes
have been achieved through
the use of grant funding. With-
out grant funding we would
not have been able to conduct
our semi-annual compliance
checks which have been criti-
cally important in the reduc-
tion of underage sales of to-
bacco to minors. Additionally,
without the vendor education
we perform, and without ac-
cess to cessation services, we
would not have been as suc-
cessful,” said Jodie Faber,
Executive Director of United
Lifestyles and Chairperson for
Tobacco Free Montcalm.
The goals of Drug Free
Montcalm for the grant are:

n many people unpack their
boxes and only clean a room as nec-
essary, but in the end this can cause
you more time than if you clean be-
fore unpacking. Start with a room-
by-room cleaning plan, focusing
on the kitchen and bathrooms first.
Kitchens are especially important to
clean and maintain, given that they
are the hub of the home.
n Pack a clearly marked box
with cleaning supplies, paper tow-
els, toilet paper and other items you
may need. it can help save yourself
time by quickly locating these items
without digging through boxes to
find a dishcloth or glass cleaner.
n Before unpacking, tackle the
refrigerator, oven, microwave, dish-
washer and garbage disposal with
a good cleaning overhaul. Cleaning
your appliances before you begin
using them is a great way to help
them perform more efficiently.
n Clean under, behind and in-
side your appliances to ensure they
are in tip-top shape.
n Start a regular maintenance
routine for dishwashers, garbage
disposals and washing machines,
with a monthly cleaning product
such as the affresh dishwasher and
disposal Cleaner or affresh Washer
Cleaner Kit, along with the suggest-
ed tips in appliances’ use and Care
Guides, which can usually be found
online.
n if your house or apartment
comes with a refrigerator that has a
water filter, be sure to change that
filter. Refrigeration experts recom-
mend changing it every six months
to keep water and ice tasting great
and to help save yourself money.
n remove any drawers or bins
in the refrigerator and wash them
in the kitchen sink with dishwash-
ing liquid and warm water. Wash
the inside of the refrigerator with a
clean dishcloth-don’t forget to wash
the compartments on the door.
n When using the self-cleaning
cycle, remove oven racks, as they
can discolor or become harder to
slide. if this happens, place a light
coating of vegetable oil on the rack
guides to help them slide in. Also,
be sure to remove the broiler pan
and any other utensils inside the
oven prior to starting the self-clean-
ing cycle.
n if you have a microwave hood,
the grease filters can be removed for
easy cleaning. Dishwasher-safe fil-
ters are also available on some mod-
els to make maintenance easier. to
clean the filter, remove it from the
hood, wash it in the dishwasher and
then reinstall it.
Wiersema provides care for women of all ages
during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum, as well
medical and surgical care for a wide variety of wom-
en’s health concerns. She is currently a full-time
obstetrician/gynecologist at Spectrum Health’s ob-
stetrics and Gynecology Office in Greenville where
she has been employed for over a year. Wiersema
performs deliveries and gynecological surgeries and
procedures at Spectrum Health united memorial
Hospital in Greenville. She has extensive experience
in minimally invasive surgical techniques and has a
special interest in providing more office based pro-
cedures.

ty to see patients in Cedar Springs,” said Brian Brass-
er, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Spectrum Health

ter through michigan State university College of Hu-
man medicine, and she received her medical degree
from Wayne State university.
Wiersema resides in rockford with her husband
and their two young children. Her hobbies include
golfing, reading, and cooking.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.

3RD ANNUAL SCARECROW COMPETITION DETAILS
Scarecrows will be displayed along Michigan Avenue and Maple Street in
downtown Big Rapids. Creativity is encouraged! Downtown Dollars will be
awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, as well as being published in the
Pioneer. RULES:
• Scarecrows may be free standing or staked. Stakes and wire must be provided
by exhibitor.
• All entries will be set up by the exhibitor between 11am and 4pm on Friday,
October 29, 2010. Locations will be assigned prior to set up.
• Removal of scarecrows is the sole responsibility of the exhibitor and must
be completed between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday, October 30, 2010. The
Downtown Business Association will not be responsible for loss or damage to
the scarecrows.
• Contest winners will be announced at 1pm on Saturday, October 30, 2010
