Introduction
Tivoli Storage Manager has been protecting data in virtual environments for a long time.
Over time, Tivoli Storage Manager has continued to introduce new features that pertain to
how virtual environments can be protected.
The most basic way to back up a virtual machine is to install Tivoli Storage Manager
directly into the guest environment. A large percentage of users are still following this
approach, Tivoli Storage Manager supports many hypervisors (KVM, Hyper-V, VMware,
LPARs, Solaris Containers, HP Partitions and more) and guest operating systems (OSs)
like Windows, Linux, zLinux, z/OS, and Solaris, among others. This setup has the
advantage of the backup operations being progressive-incremental. You can install Tivoli
Storage Manager for Mail, Databases, or ERP directly in the guest OS, providing
application awareness. The disadvantages are that this scenario requires an individual
client in each guest, and there is no integration with VMware. This lack make management
a challenge.
Later versions of Tivoli Storage Manager introduced the ability of having the TSM agent
run on a proxy server. Both VMware and Hyper-V supported this ability. This approach
provided a more robust backup solution when compared to traditional agent backup
operations. For VMware, this approach moved the backup to the proxy server. It did
require the data to be transferred to the proxy server before it could be backed up or

restored. This extra hop for the data was seen as an inhibitor. This method supported both
file level and level backup.
VMware introduced the new vStorage API in May 2009, which is sometimes referred to as
vSphere or VADP (vStorage API for Data Protection), vStorage API’s biggest advantage
over VCB is that the proxy server can access the data directly on the ESX host storage,
avoiding the need for the data hop that VCB requires. Tivoli Storage Manager supports file
level backup operations using the vStorage APIs. This course covers the file level and
level backup operations using vStorage APIs.
Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments supports multiple recovery options from
backup and vStorage API change block tracking (CBT). This new component enhances
the Backup-Archive Client (Windows only). Support includes the following features:
• CBT with incremental forever backup operations with periodic full backups
• The following virtual machine restores from a backup with multiple OSs
supported:
• File level
• Volume level

Training Environment
The training environment for this exercise guide is hosted within the IBM DEMOcentral
data center.
• vCenter:
This is a Microsoft Windows platform that supports VMware vCenter Server v4.1.
You will use a remote connection to this machine to perform the lab exercises,
including installation of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client 6.3 for Windows and
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments 6.4.
All of the exercies are performed using this machine. You will not need to connect
to any other machine.

three additional virtual machines.
The vSphere product can take two minutes after starting to recognize the available virtual
machines and data stores. To resolve any synchronization or configuration errors you
might need to reconnect as described in the following steps.
___ 6. In the vSphere Client interface, select View > Inventory > Hosts and Clusters.
Select the esx41.tsm.lab host in the navigation tree, and click the Summary tab.

___ 8. Explore the preconfigured virtual machines with the corresponding data stores in
the vSphere Client. Select the esx41.tsm.lab host and click the Summary tab.
9. You should identify three virtual machines and two data stores. One data store is
locally attached (local disk) to the ESX41 virtual machine. One data store is NFS-
mounted from the vCenter virtual machine.
You can manage all virtual machines and data stores from this vSphere Client. Tivoli
Storage Manager client manages backup and restore operations. Do not create additional
virtual machines, because space is limited. The TSM Server is preinstalled in another
virtual machine (TSM02).

data stores inside the vSphere client interface.)

environments, IT administrators can dramatically improve control over the virtual
environment.

Change Block Tracking
Exercise 14: Performing incremental forever backup operations with CBT not for distribution
Incremental Forever backup operations use the VMware Change Block Tracking
(CBT) function to identify the blocks that changed since the previous backup
operation. This function backs up used blocks only. Empty blocks are excluded to
save space. This option became available after you installed the Tivoli Storage
Manager for Virtual Environments product.
4. Monitor the progress of the backup operation. This process might take as long as
10 minutes to complete.
5. Click OK to close the Backup Completed window. Review the Detailed Status

were backed up. Close the report window.

expected, the error message would be recorded in this file.
11. In the vSphere Client interface, navigate to Home > Inventory > Datastores.
13. Click WinXP_NFS in the navigation tree. Verify that the *ctk.vmdk file is listed.
This file indicates that Tivoli Storage Manager has automatically enabled CBT for
this virtual machine.
Note: In this lab environment, the vCenter virtual machine is configured as an NFS
