1. A motorist travelling at 72 kmh-1 on a straight road approaches a traffic light which turns
red when he is 55.0 m away from the stop line. The reaction time is 0.7 s. With the brake
applied fully, the vehicle decelerates at 5.0 ms-2. How far from the stop line will he stop?

2. A car decelerates uniformly from 30 ms-1 to 15 ms-1 in distance of 75 m. Calculate the

further distance travelled before the car comes to a stop.

3. A cricket player throws a ball vertically upwards and catches it 3.0 s later. Neglecting air
resistance, calculate
a) speed of the ball when it leaves the player’s hand (t1) and
b) the maximum height reached by the ball.

4. A motorcycle stunt-rider moving horizontally take off from a point 5.0 m above the
ground with a speed of 30 ms-1. How far away does the motorcycle land?

5. A rocket stands vertically on its launching pad. The total mass of the rocket and its fuel
before launch is 2.0 x 103 kg. On ignition, gas ejected from the rocket at a speed at a
speed of 2.5 x 103 ms-1 relative to the rocket and fuel is consumed at 7.6 kgs-1. Find the
thrust of the rocket . Explain why there is an interval between ignition ang lift-off.

6. A block of mass 4.0 kg on a plane inclined at an angle 30º to the horizontal, slides from
rest through a distance of 1.0 m in 2.0 s. Calculate the coefficient of dynamic friction
between the block and the inclined plane.
