QR CONTAINERS

The QR Container reflects new knowledge

of the extrusion process gained during its
development, combined with the most
basic laws of physics.

The logic of the design of this Castool

temperature controlled container is
unassailable.

PURPOSE
• Maintain liner 30ºC (50ºF) below billet
temperature to reduce direct billet
surface inflow onto the profile, reducing
scrap from surface finish

• Increase the billet/container differential

towards the back end, and controlling
shape, especially waving of wide thin
extrusions

• Reduce container and die slide effect With a quick response container, the focus of its thermal control system
on die temperature and resulting profile is on the liner, not the mantle.

vertical as well as horizontal.
• Stabilize container and container housing
temperatures which effect hot press • Heat is added when and where it is required. Cartridge heaters are

• Minimize energy usage and extend life of • Double acting thermocouples are located between the heaters and the
container mantle, liner and dummy block liner. They monitor temperatures at the entry and exit of the liner, both
top and bottom, and the temperature of the heaters.

the process.
• The liner is heated when and where necessary; and an improved billet
temperature consistency is maintained as the alloy enters the die,
which is key to achieving product consistency both metallurgical
and dimensionally.

• When using taper heated billets intended for isothermal extrusion

and higher productivity, the container liner temperatures can be set
appropriately to enable best isothermal extrusion conditions.

• The quick response container, because heating elements and control

thermocouples are located close to the liner; allows the outside of the
mantle to be cooler than the liner, and for the container housing to be
even cooler. This maximizes support and mantle life.

BENEFITS of the Castool
QR Container
• Provide uniform flow of alloy
through the die
• Reduce cost of operation
• Reduce scrap
• Reduces downtime
• Increases productivity
• Makes isothermal extrusion
attainable
• Increases operating life
• This lets heat dissipate from the middle of the liner, and also,

• The QR container reduces energy usage by over 50% from
standard containers.

Thermocouples
Castool uses 4 double acting thermocouples located equidistant between
the heating elements and liner; positioned in the mantle exit top and
bottom, and entrance top and bottom.

Castool offers a new modular thermocouple that is easily inserted from

the container entrance, locating the thermocouples in similar positions,
as with the 4 separate thermocouples. These modular thermocouples
reduce mechanical stress, and make changing thermocouples, while the
container is in the press relatively easy.
