I. Introduction

Barangay Triunfo is one the most popular barangays in Ozamiz City. It is where the
Cotta Beach, Fort of Cotta, and the image of Nuestra Señora Concepcion del Triunfo dela Cruz
which is placed in Cotta Shrine are located. It is also where the Port of Ozamiz is situated. A
certain area in this barangay, particularly in P-5 Cotta Area, have been experiencing flooding
for the past few months. Flood, as one of many natural hazards, have huge repercussions on
communities and on the individuals living in a community, as well. This situation have caused
a lot of damage in that certain area of P-5 Cotta Area, Baybay Triunfo.

Due to this case, the people couldn’t easily get through the road because of the water
that is stocked in that certain road. There are also times that the vehicles cannot pass through
the area because of the stocked water, which usually causes a light traffic. This also results to
the unattractive view of the area. This certain road of P-5 Cotta Area is the shortest way to
Cotta Beach, Fort of Cotta and Cotta Shrine. Although the road is not wide enough for vehicles
to pass through, but for people who wishes to walk through the area in order for them to reach
their destination the easiest way, it could be beneficial for them. When there is rainfall, it is
very hazardous for the individuals to walk through that road because the water in the drainage
system is mixed with the water from the rain. Even without rain, the water is still present in
the area.

In the case of P-5 Cotta Area, Baybay Triunfo, the drainage system is not well
constructed. For the past few months, it has been practiced by the officials and residents of P-
5 Cotta Area to have a clean-up drive in cleaning the whole place, including the drainage
system, that is only within P-5 Cotta Area every first Saturday of the month. This practice is
implemented in order to maintain the cleanliness of the place. Even by doing so, the water that
is stocked in a certain area of P-5 is still present. According to the residents, the trashes in the
drainage system may be one of the reasons why the water cannot flow through smoothly, but
it is not the major factor why there is water that is stocked in a certain area of their place. The
main reason why the water cannot flow through the drainage is because the construction of the
drainage system has equal elevation. In that certain area where the water is stocked, its ground
elevation is lower than the main road where vehicles mostly pass through. That could also be
the reason why there is water which stocked in that area.

A drainage system is an essential fundamental facility that will convey rainwater from
urban and rural area to the catch basin. It does not only seek to minimize flooding or banish
surface water, it also aims to improve ground water quality (Akiat, Alarde, & Henosolangco,
2016). A proper drainage system allows water to run-off smoothly, it will also remove excess
water briskly; but the other way around, it will not allow water to flow through. Drainage
systems come in different types. If an individual designs a drainage system, he must consider
the location of the area and contemplate on few things about what type of drainage system the
individual will construct and its design, as well. Designing a drainage system can be costly but
when an area has a necessity of having a proper drainage system, it must be done for the
purpose of protecting individuals’ properties, not to widen the possible consequences that will
result due to flooding and to provide solutions to water drainage problems.

The researcher proposes a design of drainage system in P-5 Cotta Area, Baybay
Triunfo, Ozamiz City for the following purposes:
1. Provide solutions to water drainage problems
2. Minimize flooding
3. Eliminate surface water
4. Contribute to enhancing the quality of ground water

II. Statement of the Problem

Design of drainage system in P-5 Cotta Area, Baybay Triunfo, Ozamiz City, Misamis
Occidental, Philippines aims to answer the following questions:

1. How efficient is the current drainage system in P-5 Cotta Area, Baybay Triunfo in
collecting rainwater run-off?
2. What are the parameters needed in designing a drainage system?
3. What design of drainage system or flood control is appropriate?
III. Objectives of the Study

Since the water that is stocked in that certain area of P-5 Cotta Area is one of the most
important and serious concerns of the residents of the place, the researcher aims to provide
solution for this problem. The main objective of this research is to propose a design of
drainage system plan, which will serve as a guide for the proper and well-constructed drainage
system in P-5 Cotta Area, Baybay Triunfo, Ozamiz City.

The specific objectives of this study is listed below:

1. To evaluate how efficient is the current drainage system of P-5 Cotta Area
2. To determine the parameters needed in designing a drainage system
3. To propose a design of drainage system in the most affected area in P-5 Cotta
Area

IV. Significance of the Study

This research is helpful to the following:

Environment:
Designing a drainage system could improve the environment. It will help avoid the
possibility of destroying plants and grasses because of flood.

Residents of P-5 Cotta Area:

The designing of drainage system will be helpful to the residents of P-5 Cotta Area,
because this could serve as the solution to their concern about the water that is stocked or
the flooding problems of their area.

Future Plans:
This research is beneficial to people, especially to the barangay officials and/or city
engineers of Ozamiz. This will serve as their reference or guide for future plans in
constructing drainage systems.
 Future Researchers:
This study will also help future researchers. They can use this study as their basis
for their future researches and could possibly go further beyond this research.

V. Scope and Limitations

This study mainly focuses on the design of drainage system which would be capable
of conveying water run-off in P-5 Cotta Area and which would help the purok to improve its
environment, minimize flooding, and eliminate surface water that could possibly affect the
lives of individuals living within the area. This research is limited only to the area of P-5 Cotta
Area, Baybay Triunfo, Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, Philippines which is mostly
affected by flood.
