FAQ/Walkthrough by KillScottKill
Version: 3.0 | Updated: 08/02/17
INTRO
The following is a non-spoiler walkthrough for Persona 5 with the express
purposes of achieving the following on a ‘New Game' playthrough of the game:
DIFFICULTY
Persona 5 has five difficulty options: Safety, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Merciless.
Merciless is available through a piece of free DLC on PSN. The player may
change the difficulty in the system menu at any time during the game, unless
the Safety option is chosen. If the player chooses Safety at any point in the
game – at the very beginning or by later picking Safe in the system menu –
then the difficulty cannot be changed again during that playthrough. The
difficulty cannot be customized in New Game or in ‘New Game+' like it could in
Persona 4 Golden.
For the purposes of this kind of playthrough, I do recommend that the player
1/35
does not choose anything higher than Normal. I understand this may not be
acceptable to experienced players, and feel free to choose whatever difficulty
you want and change it later if you so choose.
The activities required in this guide, as well as the potential frequent use of the
Persona Compendium, makes this a very expensive playthrough. If you're on a
higher difficulty and follow the activities to a T, you may find yourself short of
funds to purchase luxuries such as new gear and consumables. Likewise,
because your afternoon time is primarily focused on finishing Confidants and
earning additional trophies, there are no set days specifically for grinding.
Rather, grinding has to occur when it's most convenient: When you're in a
story dungeon or when you're going to Mementos to do a mission that will
advance a Confidant.
Again, feel free to choose what's comfortable to you as you can always change
it later if you're not on Safety. Just do not blame the guide if you find yourself
too poor and/or under-leveled.
The social system works on a covert point tally. In order to achieve a rank-up,
the player will have to have earned a certain amount of points since the last
rank-up. This is done by choosing favorable responses during events and
spending extra time with the Confidants in events which rank-ups do not
occur. Carrying the matching arcana increases the amount of points you earn
per favorable response and per extra event. So for example, if you are about
to spend an afternoon with Makoto Niijima of the Priestess arcana, then you
2/35
will need to have a Persona whose arcana is Priestess on your person. The
Persona doesn't necessarily need to be the one equipped to you, but you
absolutely need to have it in your Persona stock.
This guide assumes that you are carrying the matching arcana. Not
doing so may cause your experience to deviate from the guide. There are
only a few exceptions to this rule. In the first week in which the player earns
control of the afternoon time, an early event with Ryuji Sakamoto is confirmed
to not require a Chariot Persona in order for the next event to also be rank-up.
This is tested and confirmed because at this point in the game the player has
not had the opportunity to obtain a Chariot Persona.
There are some other exceptions to this rule. Automatic Confidants obviously
do not need the matching arcana and the rank-up events for those arcana are
not noted in the schedule as I did not want to spoil when those rank-ups may
occur or when the player may first establish one of those story based arcana.
Additionally, Yuuki Mishima (Moon), Toranosuke Yoshida (Sun) and
Caroline and Justine (Strength) are the other three Confidants that do not
require the matching arcana. The Moon and Sun Confidants do take in-game
time like most other Confidants, but the player is guaranteed a rank-up at
every event no matter what dialogue responses they choose or whether or not
they carry Moon and Sun Personas. As such, I neglected to list responses for
those rank-ups. You also need not carry the Strength arcana as that Confidant
is quest based.
Also note: There are a handful of events in the game in which you will be
training in how to make coffee at Leblanc. During these events, you will earn a
bonus towards the Hierophant Confidant: +1 if you're not carrying the
matching arcana and +2 if you are. You'll need to have the Hierophant on you
for these events. It is noted in the schedule.
Some of the events which I ask you to carry the matching arcana to may in fact
not need it. This was the case in Persona 4, especially during the early stages of
certain Social Links (hence the Ryuji exception). However, it would take
extensive testing to figure out which events it is required for and which ones it
is not. Rather, it is easiest to simply get in the habit of always carrying the
matching arcana and lowering the odds that you make a mistake. Carrying the
arcana is a lot like washing your hands; it's simply a good habit to get into.
I cannot stress this enough. Persona 5 grants the player sixteen save slots to
work with. You may also save one file to internet storage which can be
recalled later and can also be used to transfer save data between PS3 and PS4
versions of the game. (Note: Network functions have to be on inside the game
to use this feature)
3/35
Unless for some reason you are sharing the game with someone else on the
same PSN account on the same machine, there is no reason not to rotate your
save file and make use of all sixteen slots. Should you make a mistake in the
schedule and had been using only one save slot, continuously saving over the
same file day after day, it would make it impossible to go back and correct
yourself and thus throw the entire schedule in the trash.
TRUE ENDING
This walkthrough will inform you on how to achieve the game's true ending.
The game only has four endings: one true and three bad. There is no in
between.
The first and most simple bad ending is seen if the player does not clear a
Palace by the deadline. Obviously, if you're following the schedule this will not
happen. Additionally, this scenario will vary somewhat depending on which
Palace it is that you failed to clear.
The second bad ending is the one I will be providing information on how to
avoid in the walkthrough.
A third bad ending can be viewed on the day of the game's final dungeon. This
is also response triggered, but is very easy to avoid. In this case, it would be
more accurate to say that the player would be choosing the bad end, rather
than being duped into it.
Again, there is only one good or ‘true' ending. There is no neutral ending like in
Persona 4.
RANDOMNESS IN CRAFTING
Persona 5's crafting system allows you to make items at the work desk in your
room that can be used inside of the Metaverse. Time will pass you when you
do this and you will earn points towards your Proficiency.
The challenge of this activity as it pertains to this guide is that the amount of
points you earn are random. On most occasions, the hero will earn two points
towards his Proficiency after crafting. However, on occasion, the hero will earn
4/35
three points in proficiency. The goal is to almost always achieve Proficiency +3
during these events, so you will need to save right before the activity and may
need to reload your save file and try the event again to achieve it.
These occasions are noted in the walkthrough. As your overall Proficiency stat
increases, the probability of you achieving +3 during these events rises.
ROMANCE
A selling point of Persona's social system is of course romance. Just as it was in
the original versions of Persona 3 and Persona 4, P5's male protagonist can
only form intimate relationships with female characters. In all, there are nine
ladies he can date. Be aware that there is also a PlayStation trophy for
entering at least one intimate relationship, if that matters to you.
I bring this up to tell you that for the most part, regardless of whom you
choose to date (if anyone), you will get to see all their optional romantic
scenes if you so choose.
Tae Takemi presents a unique problem to the schedule if you choose to date
her as you will see later in the game. If you have your eye on her before
playing, know that there will be a complication, but not one that can prevent
you from still accomplishing everything on the schedule. These issues are
outlined in the schedule.
STRENGTH CONFIDANT
The Strength Confidant with Caroline and Justine acts just as the Empress
Social Link with Margaret did in Persona 4. The player will be given challenges
to bring them certain Personas with certain skills. Just as it was with Margaret,
this takes no ‘in-game' time. It can be completed the same day it is started (as
early as May in NG+) or can be started and finished on the final playable day of
the game.
I should let you know ahead of time that in Persona 5 when the Palaces are
cleared, they can never be returned to. This is important to know because it
means that when progressing through a Palace, you want to make sure you
5/35
are earning the masks of every Persona that you come across. This will make
your efforts in fusing, having the appropriate arcana for the Confidant events,
and finishing this Confidant much easier.
Mementos on the other hand can be visited at any given time. There is some
overlap between Personas that appear in the Palaces and the ones that
appear in Mementos. However, there are some Personas that only appear in
the Palaces, some that only appear in Mementos, and of course, many more
that can only be obtained through fusion.
I've placed the guide to this Confidant here at the beginning so that the player
(who chooses not to use the table of content or keyboard shortcuts) need not
scroll to the bottom of the guide and potentially spoil themselves on details
such as the owners of the game's final Palaces, when the last boss fight takes
place, etc. Familiarize yourself with the Personas you will need as most of the
fusion materials can be had through acquiring them in Palaces or Mementos.

PROLOGUE
Persona 5's prologue begins with a glimpse into the hero's future and a key
event that shapes the story. The first several months of the game will be
presented in an omnibus format leading up to the events in the prologue.
Don't worry too much about what's happening. Everything will become clear in
due time.
In the prologue you will be given the option to set your difficulty and name
your hero. Currently, the hero does not have a strictly canon name, but the
name given to him in in the Persona 5 manga which released in September of
2016 is written 来栖 暁, or "Akira Kurusu" - first name, last name. The kanji for
Akira, 暁, means "daybreak" which ties into the title of the one episode anime
from 2016, Persona 5 the Animation: The Day Breakers.

Since you should have saved last night, feel free to explore all the scenes
that are open to your heart's desires. Obviously, you'll have to reload and
fast-forward through the Akechi scene to see more than one. The
possible scenes are Makoto, Haru (guaranteed), Ann, Kawakami, and Ryuji
and Mishima (guaranteed). In the long term, the girls' scenes don't affect
anything outside of getting a gift from them (they all ultimately do the
same thing).
HOWEVER, there is a final, desired scene you have to participate in. When
you're ready to advance, choose to spend your optional time with Ryuji
and Mishima. So yes, unfortunately I'm going to have to ask that you
abandon keeping one of the girls' gifts if you really wanted that. Sorry. If it
makes you feel better, I really think Ryuji/Mishima is the best scene
anyway.
When on stage, answer with
"I have a bombshell!" OR "There's someone I like!"
"I love Yusuke!"
This will help advance Yusuke's Confidant. Plus, whodoesn't

PERSONA COMPENDIUM
The Persona Compendium is a useful tool in the Velvet Room that keeps
track of all the Persona's you've possessed throughout the game and how
many there are left to discover. You can even register the current Personas
you possess so that the Compendium reflects a stronger version of a
Persona than what it starts as. For a fee, you can buy back Personas from
the Compendium and use them for Confidant events or to fuse new
Personas as much as you want. There's even a PSN trophy for completing
the Persona Compendium.
The only Persona marked in Spoiler Text is The Hero's Ultimate Persona.
Personas marked in Lavender Text are Treasure Demons that are found
in Palaces and Mementos. These cannot be used in battle, but they do
count towards the Compendium and can be used as fusion materials.
Personas marked in Green Text are Downloadable Content and do not
count towards the PSN trophy for completing the Compendium. After
purchasing the DLC, the player may retrieve these Personas once free of
cost, but afterwards it will cost in-game yen to recall them from the
Compendium just like every other Persona.
