Gypsy Punks Gogol Bordello Still
Keeping it Real after Two Decades on the Road
What is the secret to longevity?
Eugene Hütz knows the answer. Since 1999,
he and his band Gogol Bordello have been
energizing audiences around the world
with their fusion of gypsy music and rock.   life. And the so-called ‘real life’ that many
Hütz has put out seven albums, toured
the world, and starred in several films,
including a documentary of Gogol Bordello’s
history. So, how has Hütz, with his wild
music, ever-changing band members,
and explosive lyrics, managed to stay
successful in an increasingly competitive
music industry? It’s magic, he claims..

“From the beginning, I was well aware
that this is the real life,” Hütz remarked.
“Chasing that magic and passion is real
people live on some kind of matrix or ladder
is not real life. That is absolute garbage, and
sooner or later, everyone realizes it. Sadly,
sometimes not until their death bed.”
But although Hütz decries the
trappings of a “normal life,” he
understands great music does not
come purely from passion.
“The whole idea of gypsy punk was
to create music that was inspired by
gypsy music from Eastern Europe, which
requires a lot of virtuosity,” explained
Hütz. “However, I kind of did it from
the point of view of someone who has
no classical skills. But before I knew
it, I actually had amazing musicians
joining who were real virtuosos.”
“Having classically trained musicians
gave us a lot of leeway,” he continued.
“Our playground expanded so we could
be gypsy and symphonic and rowdy and
sophisticated all at the same time.”

Gogol Bordello concerts reflect that
merging of chaos and control. While the
music is intricate and well thought-out, and
the lyrics are often deeply philosophical,
the show itself can feel like a wild romp into
the unknown. As Hütz flies across the stage
dressed in bold, brightly colored outfits, his
eyes blazing and body gyrating, the crowd
feeds off his energy. And many fans have
noted that that energy can be healing.
“The music we create, we create to heal
ourselves,” Hütz said. “So then it radiates
to the listeners. What they’re feeling is
not any kind of ‘Jesus trick.’ What we’re

doing is organizing poetic information in
a special way so that it sort of feels like
your own mantra. The music lifts us to our
higher selves and the people are sure to
feel that because it’s a primal element.”   The hybrid that Hütz has created

growing up in Eastern Europe.
“We are the people of the Steppes,” he
observed. “There is a lot of space to fill up
with ballads and wind. The music there
just flows. There are beautiful harmonies.
It’s very melodic and drawn out.”
But, as Hütz explains, there are some
components of Eastern European
music that are not as well developed.
“Eastern Europeans have no sense
of rhythm,” he said. “They can speed
up to the point of falling face forward
on the floor. But there is no idea of
groove. Western music is a lot more
compartmentalized. It has much more
serious organization, and that’s where

groove comes from. We’ve worked on
creating our own hybrid that mixes the
best of both worlds. And we’re excited
that people can ride that train with us.”

explained. “Any idea of cultural supremacy
ticks me off. Our music is a very layered
thing. We try to bring out the best parts
of every culture and bottle it up.”
“We have had many band members
from all over the world come in and out,”
continued Hütz. “It’s the self-propelling
story of the band. It sort of lives its own
life in a lot of ways. Some people were
part of it for awhile, some people for a
short time, and they all brought their
own unique contributions. Which allows
for both being semi-consistent and
flowing, which is exactly how I like it.”

Here, There and Everywhere

Artist Tim Roach has discovered the best of both worlds.
H
alf the year he makes his home in
Maui, Hawaii, and the other half in
Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania.
“It’s kind of like moving every four to
six months,” Roach said. “Sometimes I
don’t know if I’m coming or going.”
He enjoys dividing his time
between the two places he loves.
“I like to be outside,” Roach said.
“So, spring through fall I’m outside in
Pennsylvania, working, hiking, biking,
and walking. I spend a lot of time on the
Delaware Canal towpath and at High Rocks
Park. Then after we turn the clocks back, I
know it’s time to get on a plane. And then
it’s work and surf until April or May.”

To say Roach leads a physically active
life is an understatement. He thrives on
teaching yoga, going to the gym, hiking
and bicycling, and excels at surfing,
snowboarding and skateboarding. (He
can do a back flip on a snowboard!)
He was so into skateboarding and
snowboarding when he was a kid that
he recalls drawing all of the logos
of his favorite board manufacturers
and hanging them in his bedroom.
Drawing, in fact, has been a part of
his life for as long as he can remember.
“I would sit at the kitchen table
and draw all the cabinets and
appliances while my mom made
dinner,” Roach reminisced. “It was
never something I thought about,
it was just something I did.”
He currently works in two
different media: pen and ink  It’s in the living

later to him when a friend asked

possibilities that I’m still exploring.”

He calls his art “drawings,” and can’t
quite describe what inspires him.
“Everything? Living? Perhaps the balance
of it all — monotony versus adventure,
happiness versus sadness, security versus
the unknown,” Roach said. “Things usually
come to me when I’m driving. Then I get
home and sit on the floor and draw.”
Currently, Roach doesn’t actively sell
his drawings, but he does like to share
his work with friends and others, who
sometimes reach out to him on social
media wanting to purchase a drawing
or two. He finds that social media is a
great vehicle for sharing his work.
In addition to his work as an
artist, Roach makes his living in

both Hawaii and Pennsylvania as a
framing and finishing carpenter.
“I don’t really consider it art,” he said.
“It’s more of a skill, and being creative can
set you apart from others. I love it though.
Building is like drawing to me: lines, lines,
lines; shapes, shapes, shapes. Plus I get to
be outside and it’s physical. I love my job as
a carpenter, and it’s in the living of daily life
that I get the most inspiration for my art.”
Maui is a special place for Roach.
He first visited only eight years ago.
“Who would have thought that

to live there?” he said. “Construction
jobs have a bit of a stigma as being for
losers, but this loser gets to work and
surf, and it’s a pretty good life. I love
surfing, so to be able to be in the ocean
in Hawaii, and get some waves after a
day of work, is as good as it gets.”
When the winter ends, Roach
comes back home to Pennsylvania.
“I miss the rocks and trees and back
roads; the river and the creeks,” he said.
“I grew up here, so the past is always
part of being here, and I can’t escape the
good and the bad. I’ve been all over the
world, and there is nothing like this area.”
“You’re not allowed to honk your
horn or flip people off in traffic in
Hawaii,” Roach continued. “That makes
me homesick for that good old greater
Philadelphia road etiquette.”
And while he has made great friends on
Maui, he won’t settle there permanently.
“You can’t get a good sandwich,
so I could never live there full
time,” Roach said.

Finds Inspiration in Both
the Natural World and Film
W
hen photographer Christopher
Kadish was 21 years old, he
saw “A River Runs Through It”
at the Senator Theatre in Baltimore. He
remembers hearing someone laughing as
the credits ran and the aisles cleared.
“But then I realized it wasn’t laughing I
heard, it was sobbing. That’s when I saw
the power of cinema and story,” he recalled.
By the time he reached his mid–20s,
Kadish had committed to a pretty solid
direction for his life.
“I decided on a three-part plan: become
a professional actor, then a photographer,
and then a movie director,” he said.
So far, Kadish has accomplished his
first and second goals, and today finds
himself “standing at the third trailhead.”

As an actor, he launched his career while
a young man, appearing in numerous films,
television shows and TV commercials. He
remembers his first film, “Edge City,” fondly.
“My first movie role was extra
special — because it was my first,”
Kadish explained. “The relief and joy
I felt being cast was exponential. I
heard Joaquin Phoenix was offered the
role. He said ‘no,’ I said ‘hell yes!’ ”
The photography bug first bit him when
he was 10. His Uncle Louis came to visit and
brought along an old SLR film camera.
“It touched me somewhere deep
inside, to use a cliché,” Kadish said.
“I can’t explain it other than it looked
like something I knew and never knew,
something magical and full of possibility.”
But it wasn’t until Kadish was living the
life of a New York actor around the turn of
the millennium that photography really took
hold of him. He started carrying a camera
everywhere he went, shooting street scenes
and friends. As he was preparing to embark on
a trip to Amsterdam for an Uncle Ben’s Rice
commercial, a friend gave him a decent SLR
camera. The gift transformed photography
into a true “passion and obsession,” according
to Kadish. He learned all he could on his own
by asking questions, reading books and taking
a class here and there. He recalls purchasing
“Photography for Dummies” at Border Books.
“Oh, I’m definitely self-taught,” he laughed.
Today, Kadish runs a successful photography
business based in his natural-light studio
in Port Richmond, Philadelphia, where

he’s been for 10 years. He works in the
studio and on location. In addition to
taking art commissions, he shoots wildlife,
landscapes, portraits and headshots.   
Having acted himself, Kadish has a
fondness for the quirkiness of his actor
clients for whom he shoots many headshots.
He shared some of their stories.
“I had one client bring a suitcase of shoes
to a headshot session,” he remembered.
“I’ve had clients start taking their clothes
off to change right in front of me (theatre
people!). I started a session with one
actor and she interrupted me: ‘What sign
are you?’ ‘Capricorn,’ I responded. ‘Oh,’
she said, despondent. ‘That explains it.’
I still managed to get great shots of her,
despite her hatred of Capricorns.”

my deep feelings, my intuition and my craftsmanship

Kadish really likes to shoot in Bucks
County, with its bounty of natural beauty.
“Sometimes I drive by an ordinary field
in Bucks,” he said. “Then I think, ‘how
much beauty is in that field of scrubs.’
Even the ugliest thing can look beautiful
if you find its lines, its best composition,

and its beauty. Sometimes you have to
look very, very closely at the smallest
parts to find it. If you get close enough,
the beauty will reveal itself.”
When talking about what makes a
great photograph, Kadish says there
are so many things to consider, but
he always asks, “Does the image
keep your eye perfectly pleased?
Does the image move you in deep
places? Does the image tickle your
sense of play and wonder? Does
the image inspire a sense of wonder
while being technically precise?”

Next up, Kadish is looking at adding
the third leg of his three-pronged
journey: film direction.
“I know how challenging it is to make
films,” he admitted. “But I want to give actors
good work. There are so many talented
actors without work. I also want to use
my strong sense of composition, my deep
feelings, my intuition and my craftsmanship
to tell stories that matter. I desire to bring
laughter and deep emotional release.”
Kadish is also convening a small hands-
on photography workshop in late February

A fter 15 years of requests,
legendary Central Bucks West
High School football Coach Mike
Pettine finally agreed to allow a banquet in
his honor — but under one condition: that
the proceeds go towards his scholarship
fund for Central Bucks athletes.
Three months before the banquet,
Coach Pettine passed away suddenly
on a golf course in Florida, devastating
his family and football community.
But his longtime friend and assistant
coach, Mike Carey, was not about to
let Pettine’s legacy end that way. With
help from several former players, Carey

started the Mike Pettine Foundation
to continue to do good works in honor
of the man many consider to be one
of Doylestown’s greatest heroes.
“No one in my life has affected me like
this man, except for my dad, and I played
under greats like John Madden and
Johnny Majors,” Carey said. “What Coach
Pettine did for kids was just unforgettable.
Whether you played for him or not — if you
called him up, he’d help you in a heartbeat.”
Bucks County residents are not the only
ones who have been inspired by Coach
Pettine. His 326 wins and four PIAA state
titles earned him national recognition.
In 2003, ESPN produced a riveting
documentary about his last year coaching
CB West. But his biggest successes
reached far beyond the field into the lives
of the students whom he guided. Many
of those former students who Coach
Pettine took under his wing showed up
at the banquet to pay their respects.
“It was a really difficult time when Mike
died,” recalled Carey. “We made the decision
to hold the banquet anyway to remember
him and help raise funds for his scholarship.
We weren’t sure how it would go, but in
the end, over 300 people came. That
event really brought us all back together.”

“We talked, we shared stories, we had
speakers,” continued Carey. “There were
lots of laughs and a bunch of tears, and
we really started thinking about more
things we could do to honor Mike.”
That initial banquet led to more
discussions, and eventually the Mike
Pettine Foundation was created. Pettine’s
son, Mike, the defensive coordinator of
the Green Bay Packers, got involved,
along with the Coach’s widow, Joyce
Pettine, Brian Buckley, Jim Benstead,
and several other former students.
Almost immediately, Pettine’s scholarship
fund went from zero to $70,000. But

that wasn’t enough for Carey and
the other committee members.
“Coach did so much good for the
community, it was important for us to
keep his memory alive.” Carey said.
Last year, through community donations,
the foundation raised enough money to
erect a statue of Pettine at the football
field and this spring, with the support
of the school board, the renovated
Pettine Sports Complex.” These
concrete symbols of the Coach’s legacy
have been very healing for Carey.
“Mike was one of my best friends,”
said Carey. “It was so hard to lose
him. But seeing the community really
come to arms for Mike has been
great. If you would have told me two
years ago that we would get all this
done, I would have said’ there’s no
way.’ But people keep stepping up
and helping. Mike really looked out
for people and it’s heartwarming to
see how eager everyone is to help.”
But Coach Pettine’s legacy demanded
far more than just symbolic gestures.

have worked diligently to continue his work of
giving local students a solid start in the world.
“Doylestown is an affluent area, but it’s a
microcosm of the world,” observed Carey.
“You can walk down the streets of Doylestown
and see homeless guys. And the same is
true of our schools. There are a few of our
former players who aren’t doing very well,
and they need help. The best time to help
them is when they’re young, give them a good
start in life. Mike was very aware of that.”
Carey has carried on Coach Pettine’s mission
to help local young people. Not only has the
Foundation continued on Coach’s tradition
of giving scholarships to one female and one
male Bucks County athlete, but they have also
added community improvement projects and
a scholarship fund for other former CB West
students who are not necessarily athletes.
In order to fund these projects, the
Mike Pettine Foundation holds banquets
and golf outings throughout the year,
along with collecting donations from
their site. They are hoping to raise
$100,000 in the near future to ensure the
scholarship fund remains successful.
“Every good thing we do is to
honor Mike,” Carey explained. “It’s
been gratifying, and at times it’s been
sad. But I know Mike is smiling from
up above. I know he’s proud of us.”  
With the help of the community,
Carey and the Mike Pettine Foundation
can continue to do the good works that
would make Coach Pettine proud.

Modern Cuisine with Rustic Charm

olished and casual, flavorful and fresh,
rustic and welcoming — a few words
that describe Earl’s New American
restaurant — one of Bucks County’s most
illustrious dining experiences.
A centerpiece of Peddler’s Village in
Lahaska, Earl’s New American takes pride
in presenting its guests with delicious
contemporary cuisine in a friendly,
top-of-the-line service environment.
General Manager Terri Kleinguenther,
Executive Chef Evan Gentile, and the
restaurant staff work in tandem to
uphold the longstanding ideals of the
restaurant’s namesake, Earl Jamison,
founder of Peddler’s Village.
The restaurant was dedicated to
him after he passed away in 2003.
“It was created in his honor,”
explained Kleinguenther.

Earl Jamison was a descendant of
Buck County’s early settlers and a
lineage who maintained a long tradition
of hospitality through successful
business ventures. Jamison realized his
ambition to build Peddler’s Village in
1962 on an unassuming plot of land that
had housed little more than a chicken
hatchery and a barn. He wanted to
transform it into a sought-after gathering
place for locals and passersby alike.
“His mission statement was pure
hospitality,” Kleinguenther said. “He
wanted to make guests happy, and this
translates into everything he created.”
Beginning with the famed Cock ’n Bull
Restaurant, a row of eclectic colonial-style
shops, and a winding red brick pathway
lined with a stately garden by Earl’s own
design, Peddler’s Village was born.

Fifty-seven years later, after
additions and iterations, the place
hums with the same energy, charm,
and entrepreneurial spirit that Jamison
always imagined would bring people
together, whether for shopping,
entertainment, dining, or special events.
“Peddler’s Village is the fourth most
visited attraction in the Philadelphia
region, and it is still family owned,” noted
Christine Hensel Triantos, director of
marketing and communications.
Earl’s New American restaurant
stands boldly as the quintessential
manifestation of the man’s legacy.
“Terri and Evan maintain Earl’s
philosophy in every facet of the day-
to-day operations,” said Triantos.
Kleinguenther started as a
server with Earl’s in 2005.

“I have been fortunate and lucky enough
to experience all the wonderful changes
that Earl’s has undergone,” she said.
“It is also my great pleasure to work
in service of Earl’s New American as
executive chef,” added Gentile. “It’s one
of the diamonds of Peddler’s Village.”
In recent years, Earl’s management
completed an exciting rebranding initiative
that transitioned the business away from its
previous fine dining approach and signpost,
“Earl’s Bucks County.” The restaurant
became more relaxed and inviting on all
counts. Most evident among the changes
is a simplified, farm-to-table style menu,
as well as carefully selected furnishings
to match. Kleinguenther observed that
the improvements were “a labor of love.”
Today, shining hardwood floors extend
throughout the dining area and bar, and

distressed sliding barn doors evoke an
undeniable ode to Bucks County’s allure.
Other features include copper ceiling
tiles, glass bead chandeliers, and 40
reclaimed wood dining tables brought
to life by Rebekah Brown of Bethany
Design. Earl’s New American also sports
an attractive fireplace, a new entrance
ramp, and a welcoming, pet-friendly,
outdoor dining patio for families and
friends to enjoy in warmer months.
“It is a fun gathering space,”
said Kleinguenther.
Notably, the work of esteemed
local artist Alan Lachman adorns the
walls throughout the restaurant.
“He is Bucks County, and we are grateful
for this partnership,” Triantos said.
Earl’s bright and open second level
is dedicated to reservations for special
events, private parties, and banquets.
The crowning attraction is, of course,
the new menu created under Evan
Gentile, and with the assistance of
Executive Sous-Chef Margaret Walker.
