Aviation Interview…

1. Why do you want to apply for this English Level?

I want to apply for this English level because is a need in every airline around the world.

x2. Have you thought in working abroad?

I have thought about it many times, but I consider that is not the right time for me because I
prefer to be a captain first.

3. What do you think about your current Job?

I think that is one of the best jobs around the world and I feel good to be part of one of the best
airlines of Latin America.

4. What are you doing now?

Now I work for Copa airlines as a first officer since 2010

5. What do you plan when you leave this office?

I plan to go to my house and get rest and then having fun with my friends.

6. Tell me about yourself.

My name is Juan Carlos Gomez, I was born on august 6th 1988, I am Panamanian, I’ve been a pilot
since 2008, I have 6 years and a half working for Copa airlines, I have no children, I’m single, I fly
the Boeing 737.

7. Why and how did you start in aviation?

I started in aviation because it was my dream since I was a kid, I asked for a loan in IFARHU to
begin my complete aviation course and after that I started to fly small aircrafts in Albrook for a
year and then I’m 2010 I started to work in Copa airlines.

8. Tell me about your first solo flight.

It was one of the best achievements in my aviation career.


9. What would you do if you cannot continue in aviation for any reason?

I have a business out of my job, so I think I will dedicate full time on it.

10. What would you do if you have a medical emergency on board?

In the event of that situation, the first thing is to land at the nearest suitable airport, that airport
needs to have a good medical assistance.

11. What would you do if you smell smoke in the cockpit?

If we smell smoke in the cockpit we will make a call to the flight attendants to see if they feel the
same thing, and then we follow the quick reference handbook to consider landing or not, also we
may use the oxygen mask if the smoke is to strong.

12. What would you do if you have a drunk passenger?

In that situation either if the airplanes are on airborne or not the passenger becomes a threat to
the rest of the passengers on board, so the best decision when you have passengers like that is to
land at the nears airport and call the police or if you are on ground call the police immediately to
get of the passenger.

13. What did you do the last time that you went to simulator?

I did emergency situations like 1 engine failure, explosive depressurization and emergency
descent, I landed with one engine, we did emergency evacuation due to fire.

14. Do you think is important to go to simulator? Why

Extremely important in every airline, because in the real world you always need to be prepare for
the worst situation on board and practicing emergencies in the simulator every 6 months is the
best way to make a safe flight.

15. Do you think English is important in aviation?

Of course, it is, because that is the aviation language worldwide.

16. Who has been your mentor?


I have had many mentors in aviation, but my biggest mentors are my dad and my mom.

17. What is the most difficult airport that you have ever flown into?

I consider the most difficult airport and dangerous Pereira because of the mountains that
surrounds the area and it has a very short runway.

18. What is the best part of aviation and the worst?

The best part is doing and living your dream traveling around the world and knowing new cultures,
and the worst I think is the sacrifice when you have family and you don’t see your kids every day.

19. What have been the most difficult part of your career?

The most difficult part is when I was in process to be a first officer in Copa, it was very stressful
and challenging.

20. What are your aspirations for the future?

To have a family and to be a good captain, to fly heavy aircrafts as well.

21. What would you do if you have an arrogant captain with you?

If this happens the best way is to be very professional and try not to discuss with him.

22. What would you do if you have a drunk captain starting a flight?

I would speak first with the flight attendants and then I would call somebody to change the
captain.

23. What do you think about being a pilot and being married?

I think that is a sacrifice for both and more if you have children.

24. What have you done to improve your English?

I always try to know new words for my vocabulary and try to speak with people in united states, I
always speak English in the radio frequency as well.
25. Have you ever had an emergency?

I've never had an emergency thanks God.

26. What is the difference between and accident and an incident?

An accident is when you have injured people on board in an emergency or in the event of a
tragedy, and an incident is when the security is being threatened and nobody is injured.

27. Step by Step how did you get until you are right now?

I started to study aviation in 2007 until 2009, then I flew for a lobster company called king crab
until 2010, and in that year, I had the opportunity to begin an airline career in Copa airlines as a
Boeing 737 first officer until this day.

28. Have ever thought on changing your job? Why?

Many times, because of the salary and you always have the curiosity of what’s going on out of
your country, but at this time I feel comfortable in my country.
