Tutorial 8:

Pre--tensioned Bolts
Laurence Marks

In Abaqus bolts use a solid representation rather than the hybrid approach
adopted by SolidWorks. This document demonstrates the steps required to build
a pre-tenisioned
tenisioned bolt model.

1. Setting up the Analysis
Import the geometry into CAE.

Create sections, material properties and instance the assembly as explained the
previous tutorials.

Blocks – Modulus = 70e3N/mm2 and Poisson’s Ratio = 0.3

Bolt – Modulus = 210e3 N/mm2 and Poisson’s Ratio = 0.3

Create a step with appropriate time increments.

Specify a general contact property with a friction coefficient of 0.1.

2. Apply the Bolt Load
The bolt pre-tension
tension is applied to a partition at the centre of the bolt. Firstly create
the partition. This is done by creating a datum plane – midway between 2 points
being the most convenient method. This option is found in the ‘Part’ module.

The datum plane is used to partition the bolt using the partition cell: use datum
plane command.

The bolt pre-load
load is applied using the standard create load dialog – with the bolt
load option selected.

The interior surface is selected for the bolt load (by clicking the partition edge)
and the user can decide which side of the partition is adjusted to provide the bolt
load. Our model is symmetrical, selecting a side is trivial.

Apply an axial pre-load
load of 5000N.

Build the remainderr of the model as usual

usual.

Solve – the results from the bolt tightening are as shown below.
