Revision on Method of Measurements

• To measure volume of liquid using measuring cylinders of different scales.
• To measure length of an object using different scale rulers.
OBJECTIVES
EXPERIMENTAL CHEMISTRY
At the end of the practical lessons,
The students should be able to:
• Measure volume of liquid with measuring cylinder
• Measure length of an object.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
1.Explain the aim of the lesson
The aim of the lesson is a revision on Method of Measurements. It’s going to be a practical on measuring volume of a liquid with
different measuring cylinders of different scale. It is also a practical, measuring length of an object with different scale rulers.

2. Dividing the students into groups of two.

The students are group into two according to the names projected in the screen.

3. Explaining parallax error and the correct way of measuring.

The teacher explains parallax errors and the correct ways of reading the measuring cylinders and rulers. The teacher must emphasise the
correct reading of the meniscus.

4. Development- Distribution of worksheet.

Worksheet is then given out to the students. Henceforth, the teacher discussed the instructions with the students.

For activity 1: Reading the volume of a given liquid.

• The teacher instructs the students to take the reading, once the liquid is poured into the measuring cylinder.
• (Teacher will have to pour the liquid into each and every measuring cylinder, as students are not allowed to do
so.)
• Student record the two volumes of liquids.
• Teacher takes note of the volume of the liquid for later comparison of answers.

For Activity 2:
• Once activity 1 is completed, students are then asked to read activity 2, measuring the length of an A4 paper.
• Students will then proceed to measure the required lengths of the A4 paper with two different scales.
• Students will then proceed to measure the required lengths of the Combined Science book with two different scales.
• Teacher takes note on the length of the A4 paper/ Combined Science.

5. Consolidation.
• Student’s results will be collected and redistributed for peer parking.
• By referring to the actual readings of the measuring cylinders and A4 papers, students are asked to mark the worksheet.
• Teacher will show the actual answers of activity 1 and 2. (Slide)
• Once the peer marking is done, the worksheet is returned to the teacher for evaluation.
