Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Begins the 2019 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS - The atmosphere at the South Point Bowling
Plaza was a combination of United States Bowling Congress
Open Championships tradition and Las Vegas flair, mixed
with the warmth and familiarity of a homecoming parade.
The first of more than 10,200 five-player teams, their
friends and family, supporters, bowling fans and curious
South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa guests were on-hand to
help usher in the 116th edition of the USBC Open
Championships.
This year's event marks the tournament's fourth trip to the
Entertainment Capital of the World and second visit to the
Bowling Plaza, where it first was held in 2017. Nearby
Cashman Center played host in 1986 and 2009.
The 2019 Open Championships will run daily until July 8
and bring more than 50,000 bowlers, in three average-based
divisions, to South Point.

"It was really neat to be a part of the opening ceremony,
and it was something I've never done before," said Hepp,
who made his 18th Open Championships appearance and
rolled a seven-count to kick off the tournament. "To be here
with guys like Marshall Holman and Mike Aulby, guys I
watched growing up and who paved the way, and them
bowling the same day as me, was surreal. To be Joe Bowler
was fun. I was nervous at first, but then I just tried to
embrace it and have fun. I enjoyed it."
After his ceremonial march to the lanes, and while he wait-
ed for his opportunity to throw the first ball, Hepp took his
throne and presided over the opening ceremony.
The festivities included encouraging words from local and
bowling dignitaries, a comedic and vocal sampling from
Frankie Scinta, who is performing at the South Point
Showroom, a ribbon cutting with representatives from South
Point, Las Vegas Events, the Las Vegas Convention and
Visitors Authority and USBC and the traditional Mass Ball

After the fun, 55 teams hit the lanes for three games of team compe-
tition, and the 2019 event got its first leaders.
In the Regular Division (combined averages of 876 and above),
SKOB of Lakeland, Florida, used a big finish to surge to the top of the
leaderboard with a 2,946 total. The effort included games of 982, 944
and 1,020.
Some members of the two-team group will be participating in the
upcoming National Golden Ladies Classic and USBC Senior Queens,
so the timing worked out for them to make a stop at the Open
Championships for the first squad of the year.
Amanda Flood paced SKOB with a 684 series and was followed by
Stan Sprow (595), Joey Flood (587), Keith Cipielewski (545) and Beth
Owen-Cipielewski (535).
"We all know each other's games well, we pump each other up and we
can help line up the others, if needed, so that makes us a good team,"
Owen-Cipielewski. "Tonight was pretty awesome. It was a once-in-a-
lifetime experience that we can check off our lists and say we did it.
And, anytime you can take the lead is awesome, too."
The Standard Division (combined averages of 776-875) was led by
Schliep Consulting LLC 1 of Shakopee, Minnesota, with games of 885,
948 and 1,016 for a 2,849 total, six pins better than last year's winning
score.
Keith Wendt led the way with a 684 set and was joined by Nate Marks
(570), Mike Nawrocki (569), Phillip Langowski (568) and Sean
Finnerty (458).
Maple Family Centers of Long Beach, New York, topped the
Classified (combined averages of 775 and below) standings with a
2,422 total on games of 792, 805 and 825.
William Latham tossed a 551 series and was followed by Tim Rice
(530), Joseph LaSpina (476), Ronald Bonomo (473) and John LaSpina
(392).
The South Point Bowling Plaza, which opened in late 2014, played
host to the USBC Women's Championships in 2016, before welcoming
the Open Championships for the first time a year later.
Competition at the 2019 Open Championships resumed Sunday
morning with the first doubles and singles squad of the year. The event
will run daily from 7 a.m. until approximately 3 a.m., with some short-
er days during March and early April.
This year, the South Point property also is home to the Bowlers
Journal Championships presented by USBC, a side event that allows
bowlers to enjoy additional competition while in the host city.
The Bowlers Journal Championships and team practice sessions are
taking place at South Point's traditional bowling center, a short walk
from the Bowling Plaza.

FIELD DETERMINED FOR 2019 INTERCOLLEGIATE
SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
ARLINGTON, Texas – The field for the 2019
Intercollegiate Singles Championships now is set
after four qualifying events were held throughout the
United States.
The 2019 ISC will feature 24 men and 24 women
competing for individual national titles April 16-17 at
Poelking Lanes South in Dayton, Ohio. The men’s
and women’s semifinals and championship rounds
will be taped April 20 for broadcast on CBS Sports
Network.
The women’s ISC broadcast will air April 23 at 11
p.m. Eastern and be followed by the men’s broadcast
April 30 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
During the competition, participants bowled six
games, with the top four men and top four women at
each sectional guaranteed a spot in Dayton next
month. The eight additional men and eight additional
women who advanced were determined based on the
number of entries at each sectional.
Davenport’s Sean Taylor fired games of 286, 299
and 223 for an 808 total in his final three games to
earn the top spot in Stratford, New Jersey, with a
1,417 total. Joining Taylor from Stratford are Jorge
Rodriguez-Rosas of Lincoln Memorial; Vincent
Gehret of Penn State-University Park; Tom Hankey
of Webber International; and SUNY-Stony Brook’s
Kurt Schall.
Fairleigh Dickinson’s Karsyn Lukosius also con-
nected for a 299 game in Stratford to lead the
women’s field, rolling to a 1,394 score. She’ll be
joined in Dayton by Fairleigh Dickinson teammates
Aimee Sherman and Amanda Chrzanowski along
with Chloe Skurzynski of Maryland Eastern Shore;
Leslie Campbell of Wright State; and Kayla Johnson
of Long Island-Brooklyn.
Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Ryan Winters paced the
field in Smyrna, Tennessee, posting a 1,408 total.
Also advancing from the men’s field in Smyrna are
Indiana Tech’s Marcus McClain and Keen Ching;
Nathan Stubler of St. Ambrose; and Jeffery Mann of
Marian.
Three of the six women’s qualifiers from Smyrna
compete for Vanderbilt, including tournament leader
Maria Bulanova, who finished with a 1,401 total. She

The men’s qualifier in Addison, Illinois, featured
268 competitors, with Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Matt
Hibbard leading a total of nine qualifiers to Dayton
with a 1,406 total. The other qualifiers include Alex
Ouellette of Concordia; Bryan Bourget of Robert
Morris-Illinois; Pete Vergos of Calumet; 2016 ISC
champion Daniel Hanson of Robert Morris-Illinois;
Alex Acosta of Saint Xavier; Kyle McGrath of
Lawrence Tech; Logan Williams of Robert Morris-
Illinois; and Michael Pruchnik of St. Francis-Illinois.
A total of eight women qualified from Addison, led
by Grand View’s Amanda Duplan (1,290). Bailey
Delrose of Maryville; Olivia Farwell of Duquesne;
Rebecca Dodson of Mount St. Mary’s; Haley
Cummings of Lindenwood; Meghan Macunovich of
Robert Morris-Illinois; Samantha Laird of Hastings;
and Destiny Miller of Saint Xavier also advanced.
Ottawa’s Daniel Hall rolled to the top spot in
Dallas, finishing his six-game block with a 1,427
total. He’ll be joined in next month’s ISC field by
Morgan Moore of Midland; Ryan Dudley of Iowa
Central Community College; Kristopher Yadao of
Midland; and Kyle Duster of Wichita State.
McKendree’s Breanna Clemmer earned her spot at
the ISC by leading the field in Dallas, finishing with
1,295. Clemmer, the 2019 U.S. Amateur champion,
was followed in the standings by Megan Carpenter of
Baker; Sierra Kanemoto of Wichita State; and Rachel
Strogin of Alabama-Birmingham.
There will be new champions in both the men’s and
women’s divisions in 2019. Robert Morris-Illinois’
Kenny Ryan and Stephen F. Austin’s Stephanie
Schwartz claimed the 2018 titles as part of their sen-
ior seasons.
Total pinfall for 64 Baker games will determine the
top four men’s and top four women’s teams from
each site that will advance to the ITC, which also is
taking place at Dayton’s Poelking Lanes South from
April 18-20.

LODI, NJ – NJSIAA sectionals realignment brought thirty-eight schools
to this year’s North 1B tournament, basically balancing the three North
Jersey sectionals and in so doing, allowing fifteen individual boys reach-
ing the cut to advance to the state finals instead of nine or twelve as in
past years. The smaller NJIC Meadowlands Division schools found
themselves reassigned from prior years to North 1B at Lodi on a
Thursday afternoon rather than the customary Saturday early morning
event at Bowler City. The change in venue didn’t bother North Arlington
which rode the strong efforts of seniors’ Eric McKenna and Liam
Henkel to a breakaway victory in Group 1; Leonia, this season’s NJIC
Patriot Division champion, rebounded from fifth place at the start of
game two to take second place behind sophomore Andy Hong’s spec-
tacular 251-267 and join the Vikings next Wednesday at Bowlero [for-
merly Brunswick Carolier] Lanes in North Brunswick for the State
championships. In somewhat of a surprise, Fort Lee and Teaneck
advanced in Group 2, beating the favorites’ Lyndhurst and Warren Hills.
Group 3 saw NJAC champion Montville upset by Livingston and Morris
Knolls. Group 4 was a runaway for Clifton, arguably North Jersey’s best
team; the Mustangs’ top three players finished first, sixth and tenth,
earning their tickets to next Friday’s NJSIAA Individual
Championships; senior Johann Gamo, as he did at the Passaic County
Tournament, had high series, edging North Arlington’s Eric McKenna
by one stick. Union City held off fast-closing North Bergen to take sec-
ond by eight pins.

HACKENSACK,– NJSIAA realignment of the sectionals brought
schools which had been elsewhere into Bowler City and the Boys 1A
Sectional Tournament. Three of them emerged as Group Champions:
Wallkill Valley [Group 1], Sussex Tech [Group 2] and Wayne Valley
[Group 4]. Wallkill Valley and Sussex Tech, members of the Northwest
Jersey Athletic Conference [NJAC], bowl their league schedules at
Sparta Lanes, but had no trouble adjusting to an unfamiliar venue,
exploding for high numbers which outdistanced even the larger schools
in Groups 3 & 4. The Rangers from Wallkill Valley punished the maples
with a middle game 1115 as they ran away with the Group 1 crown,
smothering runner-up Midland Park by more than four hundred pins; the
Panthers, who finished sixth in the NJIC Patriot Division, weren’t dis-
mayed since they bowled well enough to outscore the favored Colonial
Division quintets [Hawthorne, Pompton Lanes and Eastern Christian]
and happily punched their tickets to North Brunswick’s Bowlero Lanes
for next Monday’s State Tournament of Champions. Sussex Tech’s
Mustangs had plenty of boisterous fans as the perennial NJAC North
powerhouse lit up the scoreboard with an opening 1088 and withstood a
late rush from a strong Mahwah team to win Group 2; both advanced to
next week’s T of C. West Milford’s young Highlanders barreled from the
gate with 1145, the day’s best number, thanks to a combo 824 from their
three middle bowlers’ Mikey Nicholas 279, Shane Yodice 266 and Ralph
Utter 279; they cooled off, however, while rampaging Indian Hills
forged ahead with three balanced high games to overtake the leaders and
snare Group 3 by a scant fourteen pins. Pre-tournament favorite Pascack
Valley finished a distant third despite a stellar 706 from senior Trevor
Lauber. Group 4 produced a surprise as Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills
advanced by upsetting the favorites Fair Lawn and Ridgewood. Leading
the fifteen individual qualifiers was Fair Lawn senior Nick Greco with
an outstanding 732 threesome, closing with games of 279-256.

LODI, NJ – The North Jersey Scholarship Travel Tournament [NJSTT]
drew twenty-four bowlers [12 entries] to its second Doubles event, con-
ducted at Lodi Lanes. There was some confusion as to who the winners
were, but when the smoke cleared, Wayne Valley junior Marissa
Cosentini and Clifton senior Johann Gamo emerged as victors by five
pins over Clarkstown South sophomore Logan Priesel and Park Ridge
sophomore Joseph Mahoney. The key to the win was not only
Cosentini’s strong 235 finish, but Gamo’s spare-conversion ability in
game three; it’s rare that a bowler as talented as Johann rolls a game
without a strike, but he managed eight spares, including the key tenth
frame mark plus nine pins which gave him a 171; so while his partner
Marissa had a turkey and more, Johann settled for a pair of chickens [for
those not in the know, a chicken is three spares in a row], good enough
to win.

PBA UNVEILS EXPANDED LIBRARY OF
LANE CONDITIONING PATTERNS
The PBA has unveiled an expanded library of defined lane condi-
tioning patterns for 2019 in order to create a more diverse series of
challenges for PBA competition at all levels.
The PBA’s well-known library of “animal patterns” that were intro-
duced in the early 2000s include the Bear 41, Chameleon 39, Cheetah
33, Scorpion 42, Shark 48, Viper 36, Wolf 32 and Dragon 45. The
numerical designation indicates the length in feet that oil is applied to
the lane for each pattern.
The PBA also has a robust series of “legends” patterns named in
honor of several of the PBA’s greatest hall of famers. The new “leg-
end” patterns introduced for 2019 include the Billy Hardwick 44, Del
Ballard 34, Mike Aulby 38 and Marshall Holman 41. They join the
list of previously introduced legends patterns that include the Carmen
Salvino 44, Dick Weber 45, Don Carter 39, Don Johnson 40, Earl
Anthony 43, Johnny Petraglia 37 and Mark Roth 42. The PBA also
has a Chris Paul 42 pattern that has been used for the annual CP3 PBA
Celebrity Invitational.

the title of each pattern to view a colored diagram of the pattern.
“Each PBA lane pattern presents a different challenge for our play-
ers,” said PBA Deputy Commissioner Kirk von Krueger. “Our lane
maintenance team has created the library of patterns to provide our
staff and tournament hosts with a variety of scoring environments
which will test the versatility of our players, whether in PBA Tour,
PBA Regional or PBA50 competition.”
The Don Johnson 40 pattern was in use in the PBA Tournament of
Champions. In addition to using specific patterns for certain events,
the PBA Tour also is using “mixed patterns” for select events in 2019,
where two different patterns will be used for qualifying rounds along
with applying one of the two patterns to the left lane and the other to
the right lane for other rounds in the tournament. The recently-com-
pleted Lubbock Sports Open, for example, used the Wolf 32 and
Scorpion 32 patterns; the Go Bowling! PBA Indianapolis Open used
the Aulby 38 and Weber 45 patterns.

KYLE TROUP’S “HAIR” LEGACY
Colorful PBA Tour competitor Kyle Troup has become something of
an online sensation lately, in part because of his Afro hair style, his col-
orful apparel and his showmanship. And now, a fellow PBA Tour com-
petitor – Keven Williams of Springfield, Mo. – is adding his touch to
Troup’s growing popularity by writing a rap song entitled, “Pick It Out.”
Williams, a rapper who calls himself “KWill,” is planning to release
his song soon, but Troup has already adopted it as his “strike song.” A
teaser bit made its debut during Troup’s appearance in the live FS1 tele-
