1. Introduction
Environmental problems have attracted the attention all over the world. People are becoming
increasingly conscious of variety of problems like global warming, air, water and land pollution. Most
of the environmental problems could be caused by manmade pollution which not only damage natural
resources, but also the effect is dangerous. Human activities create waste which can pose risks to the
environment and public health [1].
One of place that can produce large quantities of waste is traditional markets. According to
the rules of trade ministry market is one of the places where buying and selling transactions occurs
with more than one seller called the center shopping, traditional markets, shops, malls, plazas, centers
trade or other designations. While traditional markets are markets that are built and managed by the
Government, Regional Government, or Private Sector [2]. Traditional markets are usually associated
with negative impressions, namely dirty and uncomfortable. If the traditional market conditions do not
change, it is not impossible that the consumers will leave them later [3]. In addition, there is no
cleaning facility in the traditional market which also triggers the accumulation of garbage in the
environment around the market. Another factor is the lack of environmental awareness and
environmental behaviour among sellers in traditional markets.
Environmental awareness refers to creation of mental attitude and the behavior of human
towards keeping the environment clean [4]. Components of environmental awareness can be classified
into two aspects: perception and behaviour, that is, the perception of environmental problems and the
behavioural inclination to protect the environment. The perception of environmental problems
involves people’s objective knowledge, perception and environmental realities [4]. Awareness can
help individuals to understand the interaction between resources (natural) and the environment [5]
Solid wastes that are not properly collected and disposed of can block waterways, cause
flooding and accumulate in open areas and hence become a breeding ground for insects, pests,
scavenger animals and people which in turn are a source of air and water transmitted diseases [ 6].
Based on the waste problems above, the author takes the research title “ The Relationship
Between Environmental Awareness with Environmental Attitude Among Trader’s at Blimbing
Tradisional Market Malang “ to determine the level of awareness and attitude of the environment .
