Present scenario in conventional construction industry

CONSTRUCTION
INDUSTRY
BENEFITS:

1. Reduction of site labour due to simplified construction methods.

2. Minimal wastage: with the usage of the standardized components &
less in-site works.
3. Cleaner sites due to lesser construction waste.
4. Less site material through usage of pre fabricated components.
5. Cleaner environment : Reduction or elimination of conventional
timber formworks: replaced by prefabricated components and
alternative moulds with multiple usage capability.
6. Controlled quality & highly aesthetic end products through the
process of controlled pre fabrication & simplified installations.
7. Neater and safer site: because of reduction of site workers, materials
& construction waste.
8. Faster project completion: Due to the usage of the standardized pre
fabricated components & simplified installation process.
9. Lower total construction cost (due to all above reasons)
A prerequisite for IBS is adoption of MC (modular
coordination) by all parties from submitting technical
consultants to the approving authorities.
In present condition we hardly use Modular coordination in
building design.
The reality in our context is that most building specialists still
apply measurements in terms of feet- inches. eg. 18feet,
instead of 6.0m houses.
.
Public and private sectors would need to play their roles in educating
local construction industry players.
MODULAR COORDINATION
MC is a concept of coordination of dimensions and space where
buildings and components are dimensioned and positioned in a
basic unit or module known as 1M which is equivalent to 100mm.

The use of MC is an important factor in IBS effective application as

it completes the industry through quality control and increase of
productivity and constructability. The concept allows
standardization in design and building components. It encourages
participation from manufactures and assemblers to enter open
system market, thus reducing the price of IBS components.

It acts as a tool towards rationalization and

industrialization of the building industry.
•MC: international system of dimensional
standardisation in building as specified by ISO
Standards and in national standards of many
countries.
•A module: a basic dimension which could for
example form the basis of a planning grid in
terms of multiples and submultiples of standard
module.
Can you imagine the length of the beam is 2033 mm? so, it is easier for
manufacturer to standardise it into 20M instead. This standardisation make
easier for open system where everybody can produce the component based
on modular.

The main factors limiting the uses of MC in building industries is lack of

knowledge on MC concept and it requires precision dimensioning and
proper planning.MC may be applied to the design, manufacture and
assembly of buildings, its components and installations. It also affects the
work positioning and dimensioning during construction.
BENEFITS:

•Facilitates cooperation between designer, manufacturer,

distributor, contractor and authorities.
•Exact Dimension: Standard components without restriction on
freedom of design
•Optimizes the number of standard sizes of building
components.
•Permits a flexible types of standardization.
•Encourages interchangeability of components. (material, forms
or methods of manufacturing)
•Simplifies the site operations
•Ensures dimensional coordination between installations.
