On 21 March 1960, at a police station in the South African
township of Sharpeville in Transvaal (today part of Gauteng)
a crowd of about 5k to 7k protestors had gathered against
apartheid law. The Police opened fire killing 69 people including
10 children. There are said to have been 289 casualties in total
including 29 children. Many of these are said to have sustained
back injuries from being shot at while trying to flee. This incident
is known as the Sharpeville Massacre.
In present-day South Africa, 21 March is marked as a public
holiday in honour of human rights and to commemorate the
Sharpeville massacre.
UNESCO marks 21 March as the Day of Elimination of Racial
Discrimination. In New Zealand, we mark this day as Race
Relations Day. Every year there are numerous celebrations of
this day across the length and breadth of the country. This
year too more than 35 separate Race Relations celebrations in
communities from Northland to Invercargill, Gisborne to Hawkes
Bay will be taking place throughout March. Events range from
food festivals to debates, colour runs, cultural performances and
speech competitions.
We live in not just the most ethnically diverse but also one of the
most peaceful countries in the world. Race Relations Commissioner
Dame Susan Devoy says she’s proud to see all corners of Aotearoa
New Zealand celebrating Race Relations Day. “More and more of
us are appreciating the richness that different cultures bring, and
celebrating the relationships we can have with one another. And it’s
happening in both cities and smaller centres. Word is spreading.”
While being a melting pot of numerous diverse cultures and people
is rather unique and beautiful, it brings with it several challenges.
Racism can be one such challenge. Noting that racial intolerance is
on the rise overseas and closer to home and the NZ Attitudes and
Values Survey, as well as HRC’s own complaints data showed clearly
that we as a country need to start talking openly about intolerance.
Given this, in 2016 the NZ Human Rights Commission announced
its first anti-racism campaign that asks Kiwis to start sharing their
own personal stories about racism, intolerance and hatred as well
as our hopes for the future. The campaign was called - That’s Us

Give nothing to Racism
We can stop casual racism from growing into something
more extreme.  We can give it no encouragement.
No respect.  No place.  No power.  We can give it nothing.
That’s Us is about the kind of people we want
to be, as well as the kind of country we want
our kids growing up in. New Zealanders need
to understand that the way we treat each other
is crucial to our future so we are highlighting
instances where we have not treated each other
with dignity and mana.
HRC says “We trust that New Zealanders will
recognise injustice and unfairness when they
hear the true stories of what fellow Kiwis have
gone through it’s time for us to work actively at
peaceful race relations”.

but we know most people never complain. In
her speech on Race Relations Day Celebration
at Government House, speaking of the That’s

abused or discriminated against.
From the moment we began we knew that many
Kiwis didn’t think we had a problem with racism
or prejudice here. They thought we weren’t as
bad as America or Australia, so we were all good.
But the reality is that when we talked to Maori
New Zealanders, Asian New Zealanders, Pasifika
Kiwis, Muslim Kiwis: every one had a story to
share. A story of prejudice, a memory of being
humiliated, a time when they were made to feel
less than everyone else.”
Each of us can relate to this. Looking back at
our own journey of migrating to a new country
and starting a new life, we can recall stories of
discrimination that are perhaps etched in our

hearts and minds. In an attempt to change
this narrative – the Human Rights Commission
calls on each one of us to “Give Nothing to
Racism”. The message is clear - Racism starts
small.  Sometimes it lives in everyday actions and
comments that we laugh off, nod in agreement
to, excuse, and therefore accept.  But we don’t
have to.  We can stop casual racism from growing
into something more extreme.  We can give it
no encouragement.  No respect.  No place.  No
power.  We can give it nothing.
The message this Race Relations Day is that by
giving nothing to racism we refuse to indulge it,
we refuse to let it florish, we refuse to welcome
it. Lets challenge our own prejudices, because
they are passed on to the next generation with
the subtlest of teachings. We’ve lost count of
times parents have told their children to endure
racist taunts everyday. Prejudice starts small, on
the streets we live in, at the places we shop in,
and it grows when good people allow it. Hate
starts small but so does hope. We want New
Zealanders to challenge ourselves and our loved
ones to treat each other with respect and mana.
Lets make this Race Relations Day about taking a
stand about the kind of country we live in and the
kind of people we are. We hope you will join us.

Employment reforms will lead to business failures
One of the Labour-led
Government’s main priorities
is to strengthen unions’ rights
at the expensed of vulnerable
workers and the health of New
Zealand’s economy. In the process
of strengthening those rights it
is clear that the Labour party
wants to ignore the 82.3 per cent
of workers who do not belong to
a union.
The Government wants to
bring in significant changes
to employment laws without
consulting the people who will be
most affected.
The previous National-led
Government worked hard to
consult employers and employees
before formulating legislation that
was positive not just for employers
but employees and the New
Zealand economy as well.
Changes such as eliminating 90-
day trial periods for all firms except
small businesses will without
doubt have a major impact on how
businesses and employers choose
to employ people.
The 90 day trial period was
rolled out nationwide in 2011
by New Zealand National Party
to encourage all businesses,
small and large, to grow their
workforces and take a chance
on new workers and long-term
unemployed people.
The changes from Labour will make
it much harder for young, unskilled
and vulnerable workers to find
employment and make it too risky
for mid-sized employers to take a
chance on a new worker with no
track record of employment.
These changes will only reduce
job opportunities and wage
growth, especially for those
vulnerable workers on the edges
of the labour market.
The law as it stands encourages
all businesses, small and large, to
grow their workforces and take a
chance on new workers and long-
term unemployed people.
Since the 90 day trial has been in
place we’ve seen a big move into
the labour market from groups
who have traditionally been left
out. As a result our participation
rate of adults in the labour market
is the highest it’s ever been.
The biggest single group of new
workers is sole parents. We now
have the lowest number of sole
parents relying on a welfare benefit
since the late 80s because tens
of thousands have successfully
moved into the labour market.
Larger businesses are often the
ones who take on vulnerable
workers, including people like
ex-prisoners and people who are
recovering from difficult health
situations, because they have the
training systems in place to work
with them.

she may face off with Phil Twyford over

issue. That’ll be a battle and a half to
watch in the days to come.
Another surprise was Mark Mitchell who
also was promoted to the front bench as
he took justice, defence and disarmament.
It’s clear his leadership campaign did
not go unrewarded. Mark’s experience
in Police and in private security will
certainly be of value to his portfolio.
Todd McClay was another definite
winner – taking Gerry Brownlee’s Foreign
Affairs, as well as tourism and trade,
he’s up to fifth in the rankings. Todd has
been instrumental in ensuring that New
Zealand was one of the key stakeholders
in the TPP which later became CPTPP
and was signed in Peru by Trade Minister
David Parker earlier this month and was
described by the Minister as a ‘Fair Deal
for New Zealand’.
But there are those who were given a
demotion as well. Gone are the ‘Brat
Pack’ and ‘Boys Brigade’ of the 1990’s.
Only two remain from that – namely
Smith and Brownlee. For Brownlee and
Smith, the message is clear – It’s time to
step aside, generational change is here.
Gerry Brownlee now sits outside of
the top ten, his major role now being
the Shadow Leader of the House. Nick
Smith took a dive as well, losing his
environment portfolio, and now he only
holds the State Services and electoral
law reform roles. Other significant
Generational Changes for 2020 are Jami-
Lee Ross, Sarah Dowie who are both up
19 places while Maggie Barry and Nicky
Wagner also dropped places with the
latter, the biggest looser sliding down
from 18 to number 40 in the list.
While denying that some of the MP’s

Bridges said the line-up reflected an
intention to make use of new talents and
ministerial experience. “This team of MPs
is an alternative Government in waiting.
It will effectively hold this weak Coalition
Government to account and ensure the
National Party earns the trust of New
Zealanders and the right to govern in
their interests in 2020.”
The reshuffle showed that the National
Party is a real opposition party and
holds the government to account. It’s
called a Shadow Cabinet for a reason and
those who have been in the government
know how painful it is sometimes to
be in the opposition, wait, watch and
not just react, but react promptly and
competently as possible.
Hence it was important for Bridges,
as he prepares the largest party in the
parliament yet in opposition, that there
is fresh blood in any Shadow Cabinet
reshuffle. Coming from the backbench
means that you are generally hungrier,
less battle weary and more driven to not
only be on top of any issue of the day but
to also make the right noises about it.
Strategically sound but is that enough to
take them to victory in 2020.

Trump taps Brad Parscale to run his 2020 re-election campaign
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday
hired Brad Parscale, the digital media
director of his 2016 campaign, as the
campaign manager for his 2020 re-election
bid, the campaign said.

three years before the election was
announced as Eric Trump, one of the
President’s sons, touted Parscale as an
“amazing talent” who was “pivotal to our
success in 2016”, CNN reported.
“He has our family’s complete trust and
is the perfect person to be at the helm of
the campaign,” he said in a release from
the campaign.
Trump’s bid for re-election -- filed shortly
after his 2017 inauguration -- did not come
as a surprise as White House Press Secretary
Sarah Sanders in June 2017 had said the
President would run for a second term.
“Of course, he’s running for re-election,”
Sanders had said.

Jared Kushner said Parscale was
“essential in bringing a disciplined

AllGoods was formed in early 2017 and was
born out of frustration with high listing
and success fees on Trade Me and the lack
of viable NZ alternatives. Our dream was
to create an innovative and modern online
marketplace for New Zealanders to buy and
sell without it costing them an arm and a leg.
The 4 founders Levi, Mark, Nathan, and Brad
were all University of Canterbury graduates.
For the first 7 months we worked out of a
caravan that Levi built, which Brad also lived
in at the same time. The others all slept in
garages or cars to save money so that they
could spend less time away, and devote more
attention to the project. Mark and Nathan
focused on user experience and design while
Brad focused on implementation of the front
end of the website. Levi, the original creator
and director of the project, used his wealth of
experience at Rocket Lab to engineer cutting
edge server side and database designs that
allowed for high speeds and tight security.
In the last quarter of 2017 we hired our
first employee, a developer who helped us
revolutionize our front end design. Due
to our rapid scaling and transition into
our marketing phase we soon outgrew the
confines of the caravan and upgraded to an
office. We now have had a steady stream of
sellers listing products on our site and we will
be ready to launch to the general public in
early April.
The hole in the marketplace we will be filling
is the need for a modern and quality Kiwi
e-commerce platform which Trade Me just
isn’t filling anymore. Trade Me has an old
and clunky website, doesn’t listen to it’s
sellers, and is largely overrun by overseas
sellers which crowd local New Zealanders
out of the marketplace. This hardly justifies
their horrific fees! The frustration in the
marketplace is evident due to the amount of
sellers that are trying their luck on Facebook
or through their own website.
There have been some TradeMe alternatives
over the years that have failed to pose a
significant threat. The sites that we have
studied have either had an inflexible
framework, security flaws, poor design,
horrible user experience, no innovation or a
combination of some or all of these.
AllGoods however, has been completely
designed from the ground up with a fully
flexible framework that enables us to
rapidly make changes to suit our sellers and
buyers. A core feature of AllGoods is the split
between brand new products and second-
hand auctions. We offer all of our product
sellers the full benefits and features of a
store including a customizable storefront, an
inventory management system, and a chat
function that enables customers to connect
directly with sellers on-site. We only charge
$4 a month + a 2% success fee which is much
lower than Trade Me’s 7.9%. On top of that
we have always believed that it should be
completely free for New Zealanders to list
and sell their second-hand items, which is
exactly what we have done!
We have also added in-site social media
concepts. Stores create posts and can be
followed. Posts will show up in a users news-
feed which is a great way to find out about
new products, promotions, and sales. Stores
can also offer promotions such as ‘$20 off if
you spend $100 or more’ or ‘Free shipping
if you buy 3 or more items’ which are
completely handled by our system. AllGoods
also automatically handles cancellation and
refund requests, making it easy for stores to
manage these with a few clicks of the button.
All of this makes AllGoods the easiest and
quickest way for people to set up an online
store from scratch, and one of the only ways
that will immediately allow you to start
selling on a platform so you don’t have to do
all of your own marketing. This is important
because there are thousands and thousands
of New Zealand stores who will be looking to
sell online in the next few years in order to stay
relevant in an increasingly competitive market.

The Rama story holds forth many ideals. Today the
world needs the message of the Ramayana. Why?
Children do not pay attention to the words of parents.
Parents do not set worthy examples to the children.
Even parents do not show great concern for nurturing
ideal children. Teachers do not teach the right course of
conduct to students and students do not offer the due
respect to the teachers. Kinship itself is robbed of bonds
of affection. Pollution has sullied every sphere of activity
– business, education, politics, etc and caused general
degradation in society. In every sphere, demeaning
ideals and actions are rampant. People have forgotten
the great message of Rama. They have poisoned life at its
source. They have forgotten the Divine, with the result
that they are immersed in misery.
In such situations, the Ramayana provides the ideas
and examples for reforming society. People lead
artificial lives today. When they understand the
Ramayana they will know what is right. Then it has to
be practiced. There is no meaning in merely repeating
the name “Rama, Rama, Rama”. The Rama principle
has to be fully understood, and one has to live up to it.

egoism and uncontrolled desires, misused his knowledge and brought
about his ruin. Rama used his knowledge for the benefit of the people
and made them happy.The difference between Rama and Ravana was that
between Dharma (righteousness) and Adharma (unrighteousness). Rama
and Ravana are present in each human being. Ravana was the master of 64
Rama symbolizes Idealism types of knowledge, but he could not receive God’s grace. Rama also learnt
all the 64 types of knowledge and he put them into practise. Ravana was

Andrew Harris moved from the United Kingdom
to New Zealand in 2008. He was born in Liverpool,
survived a grammar school education and
graduated with a first class honours degree from
the University of Leeds. He had a successful career

Thrillers with a Social Conscience writer Andrew
Harris is on a mission to make the world a better
place. New Zealand based Harris wants to celebrate
the progress we have made through science &
technology and make better use of the wealth we
have created for the benefit of all humanity. His
latest book - A Litany of Good Intentions – is set in
India and takes a long, hard look at the root causes
of poverty and how they can be addressed.
Why set your book in India?
I’ve fallen under the spell of India. Indians see life
as a gift and genuinely believe that things will work
out. My book looks at poverty and its horrendous
human consequences – trafficking, crime,
prostitution, child slavery, disease and premature
death. It is written to be uplifting, inspirational and
thought-provoking. If any country can eradicate
poverty, India can do it…..and is doing it.
How do you change the world through crime
fiction?
I believe the world is changed Bottom-Up not Top-
Down. People change the world not politicians. To
mobilise people power there is greater opportunity
today than ever before. I love the popular appeal of
crime fiction in its various formats. I want Litany
to stimulate a world-wide debate on how we can
eradicate poverty.
The book features some strong Hindu
characters. How did you research Hinduism?
Are you a spiritual person?
I spoke to Hindus, read extensively on Hinduism,
visited numerous temples and watched many films
and documentaries on this fascinating religion. The
concept of Moksha and the importance of Samsara
feature strongly in the book. I am becoming more of
a spiritual person as I write these books.
The book is the second in your Human Spirit
Series. What’s the message you want your
readers to understand?
Very simply that we are a unique and wonderful
creation capable of doing anything we set our
minds to. The Human Spirit is irrepressible. But
we have a dark side that, left unchecked, can cause
unimaginable suffering and destruction. My first
book The C Clef looked at why there is no cure for
cancer. This book addresses the issues surrounding
poverty. Together we can find solutions.
Tell us about your next book, More. Where does
the action take place?
Over the next thirty years there will be more food
produced and consumed than throughout our
entire history. Already we are seeing some of the
consequences of agriculture on an industrialised
scale. My next book – More – will look at diabetes,

receive an overwhelming number
of calls from members of the public

homes and vehicles.
One way you can make it more
difficult for criminals to dispose of
or sell property is to keep a record
of your valuables.

Thousands throng at Police Open Day
Auckland City, Waitemata and
Counties Manukau Police joined
forces to host a public Open Day
at the ASB Showgrounds Sunday
11th March.
The Open Day had something for
everyone, according to Assistant
Commissioner (Districts) John
Tims.
All three police districts in
Tamaki Makaurau had come
together to host this Open Day
there was a range of activities
showcasing the diverse roles and
teams within Police.
“This isn’t your standard Open
Day event, along with the displays
and information on different
of all reported crime. Unfortunately
burglaries and thefts have the
lowest resolution rates with few
clues being left and victims unable
to identify offenders.
For this reason it is even more
necessary to increase awareness
around the importance of accurately
recording the serial numbers and
description of property, in order
to increase the resolution rate for
burglaries and thefts.
Every year Police recover thousands
of dollars' worth of stolen
property. Unfortunately, many
items cannot be returned because
the owners did not record the serial
numbers or mark the property
so that it could be identified as
belonging to them.
People who can provide the serial
numbers of stolen goods to police
Police teams and recruitment,
our ever popular Police Dog
teams, is there, along with our
Armed Offenders Squad and
Police Horse team.”
“Our colleagues from Fire, St
John, Airport Rescue, and the
Westpac Rescue Helicopter will
be joining us, along with our very
own Eagle helicopter”.
There were also have cultural
performances from local school
and community groups, the
Police choir, Police Indian dances
and our Police Hip hop dancers.
There was also a chance for
anyone interested in a career in
the Police to have a go at aspects

insurance companies will also
waiver the no-claim excess for
clients who provide serial number
records when they report a loss.
There are various ways you can
identify your property. These
include engraving items of property
with your unique identifier such
as a Drivers license number,
and keeping photographs of
property that can’t be engraved.
Police suggest keeping valuation
certificates or purchase receipts
and descriptions of your valuable
items in a safe place for future
reference.
SNAP (Serial Number Action
Partnership) is an initiative of
the New Zealand Police, aiming
to prevent burglary and property
of the Physical Competency test
and recruit testing plus a few
more activities through the day.

keen on having a behind the
scenes look at Police or joining
us as a recruit to come along and
meet some local officers,” says
Assistant Commissioner Tims.

Bharatiya Mandir preparing to celebrate
Silver Jubilee in June
The first purpose-built temple in New
Zealand for Hindu Community “Bharatiya
Mandir” is completing 25 years of its
existence this year in the month of June, as
per the Management committee President
Mr. Hemant Prashar. “We have come a
long way, and I have been fortunate to
be associated with the Mandir from day
one,” says Mr. Parashar. Bharatiya Mandir
started as a dream in 1986 was finished as
a reality in June 1993. In the year 1986, a
group of Auckland based Hindu community
members led by Mr. Roshan Nauharia using
a futuristic approach realized the need for

has been a red-letter day for the association
as it marked a change in the thought
paradigm for our Indian community.
The Indian community is known for its
business acumen, for its resilience, work

empowerment lies in thought leadership.
The star attraction of this first Indi Talk
was the renowned film maker and social
activist Shri Ashoke Pandit whose dynamic
oratory and views on the new India ignited
the minds of the audience. Ashoke Pandit
talked about how India is transforming
rapidly under the able leadership of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While he
extoled the achievements of the current
government, he urged the Indian diaspora
in New Zealand to being an ambassador
of a rising India. His talk was followed by
a panel discussion chaired by Veer Khar,
the Chair of the Diversity centre, Roy
Kaunds, the communications in-charge
and Ram Lingam, the Vice President of
the association. The panel discussed how
a change in narrative is happening at the
macro level by the government of India
and how we could rise up. Questions
from the audience were entertained and
satisfactorily answered by Ashoke Pandit.
With this event, the Indian Association of
New Zealand continues to be a trailblazer
building a temple to serve the purpose of
feeling home away from home. There was
great demand from within the migrant
community for spiritual support for the
new Aucklanders. It is important for them
to have a place where they can express
themselves, speak their languages, practice
and celebrate their festivals, link their
values with their adopted home and feel
proud of who they are and where they have
come from.
Religion is part of the identity and existence
of most immigrants from the South Asian
in thought leadership; and the ‘India
Rising’ event was one of those pioneering
activities that defines the association. This
is a first in a permanent series of Indi Talks.
President of IANZ, Suresh Ramji mentioned
that, “As part of this series we will invite
thought leaders, who have an opinion and
a viewpoint, to share it with the wider
community. This, we hope, will spark a
debate and discussion on topics that affect
the community and which in turn will
empower the community”.
It is well known that the Indian diaspora
in New Zealand is an eclectic mix, who
cannot be slotted into pre-defined political,
social or economic groupings. Veer Khar
summarised this point by saying “Due to
this diversity of opinion, we need consensus
and a collegial approach to confront issues
that affect us. The Indi Talk series is one of
those efforts to bring various viewpoints on
a common platform”.
Roy Kaunds remarked that “India is a
continent disguised as a nation and our
association represents the largest number
of the various cultures that are called by the
generic term ‘Indian’. In the last five years
we have broad-based our membership
and welcomed younger and talented
professionals to join our team”.
The India talk complements one of the
association’s greatest achievements, in
the past year, has been the building of a $5

Mandir was built at a site purified with
blessings of Vedic mantras recited by Saints
and Acharyas.
Several community members identified
the need for a proper Temple in the spirit
of “Sanatan Dharma”. A committee was set
up and to be known as Bharatiya Mandir
Indian Temple Inc.
Today, Bharatiya Mandir has become
the most prominent landmark and a
community center for the people of Indian
origin. In this long journey of 25 glorious
years, Bharatiya Mandir now has also
acquired four properties, adjacent to the
temple and just recently The Presbyterian
Church property which is only one property
away from the Temple. These properties are
being developed for the benefit and usage of
the wider community.
Mandir is providing all sort of services and
facilities to the community like celebrating
religious festivals, all kind of Vedic rituals
& poojas, wedding ceremonies, library and
JP services. A group of dedicated teachers
is running Sunday classes for community
children which include teaching Hindi,
Gujarati, and Telugu language, yoga, dance,
music & religious for over 20 years now.

and other part of the property and Mr
Kohli was very impressed with the work
and services being provided by the Mandir
and offered all possible assistance in any
way he could do for the community. There
is lots of excitement and buzz among the
community members and devotees, and
they look forward to the festivities to begin.

Manjit Singh on the Tabla, Navneel Prasad
on the dholak and Hemant Thaker on the
keyboard. Neerja’s rendition of the sufi
songs using classical ragas and popular
songs took the mood of the audience to a
sublime level.

this inaugural issue.
We are joining the news media arena at a
time when the world is marred with lots of
chaos, clashes, war like situations, natural
disasters and political uncertainties. We
in New Zealand are fortunate to be living a
relatively much comfortable and peaceful
life as compared to some other parts of
the planet.
In New Zealand, we have two very young
Turks sitting in the saddle both of the
power and in the opposition. We have a 37
years old suave, very charismatic and soon
going to be mum Jacinda Ardern as our
Prime Minister while we have a 41 year old
just christened leader of National Party
Simon Bridges as the opposition leader.
The bottom line is the same. Whether
this waste is dumped in New Zealand or
elsewhere, it is destroying our beautiful
planet Earth.
As we went about talking and
interviewing prominent community
members, one thing stood out clearly,
there is a lot of effort going behind the
large businesses especially hotels as well
as community projects that are gearing up
and focusing on understanding the link
between consumption and waste. And the
impact this has on sustainable living and
our environment.
On a personal note, I would be happy
to see not just corporates but also the
government stepping in with quick,
practical measures to create a Plastic Free
New Zealand.

people are used to the old ways of buying
plastics and disposal of wastes. Human
beings are creatures of habit and it will not
be easy to make the change in beginning.
We need to ask the big question to
ourselves - Are our Values Matching Our
Purchase Behaviours? Can we adopt
environmentally sound practices and drive fine indian cuisine
impactful environmental changes? Do we
have the choice to consciously evolve into
an environment friendly lifestyle? Can
we influence a healthy positive culture

Recycling and Composting Para Kai we will
reduce the amount of waste going to the
landfill. New Zealand’s goal of zero waste
by 2040 is achievable if we all get in behind
it. There is no additional cost for this

2.5 million tonnes of waste is buried in
NZ landfills each year, yet around three
quarters of this could have been reused,
recycled, or composted. Sadly, most of this
waste is sent to developing countries.

The Exhilarating Journey of Nirvana
Mrs. Ranjna Patel (ONZM, QSM, JP) talks to us in the first serving of this series.
Tell us a little about yourself?
My Grandfather came to Fiji in 1920 from
Gujarat, India on the boat. Both our sets
of parents came from humble beginnings
with a different perspective towards life.
My parents getting married early in 1940’s
transferred their knowledge from India,
in exactly the same way for us, so we were
brought up quite strictly. The perception
of what was in the village in India was
what they brought back here, which was
very different.
What are your fondest childhood memories
and how different was your growing up in
those times?
There were only one hundred families of
similar origin back then and everybody
knew everybody. Every Sunday we would
get dressed up in our best and go visiting
family and friends. Unlike children now,
our entertainment was either going to
Westhaven, play on the rocks or going to
Mission Bay and play in the park.
How did you meet your Husband?
I had an arranged marriage. It was all
very quick. I thought I had never met him
before but to my huge surprise, Kanti
remembers that he met me 20 years
before our wedding when we were both
children, maybe six or seven years old in
a restaurant in Mumbai. I even told the
grandchildren about the story, the place
where grandfather and grandmother first
met.
How was the transition for you as a newly
married couple?
The Wedding was planned in just ten days.
There just 12 people and the wedding was
in my uncle’s house. We had to go to Delhi
to get our Visa and then we left for New
Zealand after meeting his dad. Personally,
I feel it was a much bigger adjustment for
him as a person coming from a different
country, leaving all his relatives and
starting a new career.
When Mr Patel (Kanti) first came to New
Zealand, did he have any preconceived
notions about what life was going to be
like here?
In those days it was very hard for Kanti
because he was a qualified Doctor and
the Medical Council would not allow
registration without a job. Also, one could
get a job only if one had registration.
So after 10 months, Kanti being the
determined man that he is, made up his
mind to take the exam instead and he
cleared it.
A very wise Doc told him that New
Zealand is not ready for a coloured
Doctors, a speciality Doc of his skin colour,
with an accent - so the other GP s would
not refer to him. And said that he would
not survive even if he was the best of the
best. Very harsh words, but worlds of pure
wisdom. He told him to go to an area that
looks like him and sounds like him. And
that made him set up his first clinic in
South Auckland where nobody wanted to
work because it’s was a very high needs
community, a tough community where
none of the others wanted to go. But Kanti
had a very different take. He had no hard
feelings and said I have got a career and
that is what matters most to me.
Kanti has a lot of determination and a can-
do attitude that can turn any obstacle into
something better in life. From the day he
started, the barriers have been enormous.
But he does not let these affect him in any
way. He is mentally so resilient that he can
do anything once his heart is set on it. He
believes that if we keep dwelling on all the
negative, we get lots of reasons why not
to do something but it’s far better to just
go ahead and keep moving on in life. He
always thinks of breaking it down to the
core - what are these issues and how can
I overcome them. So, he focussed on his
speciality and worked on how he could
start with this practice.
Was your interest in business a result of your
husband’s successful career?
When it started it was like – Kanti was
the doctor, he was the clinical expert and
I had to do everything else. Which meant
I was the cleaner, I was the typist, the
receptionist.
I enrolled for a course and taught myself
excel, and soon figured it out. Gradually
we grew into 45 centres. Maybe that
can-do attitude is something that came
naturally to both of us.
Looking back, are there any regrets or

When I look back in retrospect, I
remember all the positive and beautiful
things. If I keep harping on all the
turbulence and how difficult the journey
was, I would be defeating the whole
process of how we evolved. So, we have to
take the plusses with the minuses which
are very important because people get
bogged down with the baggage of why this
happened to me in the past. And one can
never grow and move ahead until we can
shed that baggage.
What were the toughest moments?
In the beginning, we had no money. The
bank would not give us any loan to buy the
business. We had no cash to even pay the
lawyer. Then a friend came and gave us
some cash and said – “just use this to pay
the lawyer’s bill”. Even then we thought
how we are going to do it. But then things
gradually just started happening.
The hardest time at that point was being
audited because we were doing things
differently. But to the bureaucracy, it didn’t
matter. It is a high needs area and people
don’t come between 9 to 5 not because
they didn’t care for their health, but to
them, it was far more important to bring
bread on the table for their families. And
that’s how we changed our timings and
the clinic work hours. And thus we grew,
with understanding their needs, which
apparently was considered different from
the industry norms.
We were always being audited, all the
time and we still are, because we are very
different from how things are normally
done. The concept of perception and reality
are far apart. Since the customer wants
and needs are very different to the ones in
the high needs list, what is important to
us is to create a whole business module
around what the needs of our patients.
We have always done things differently
and not followed how everyone else does
the same thing. That is because doing it
the same way does not suit everybody and
never guarantees success. That is the only
way we can continue to provide for our
patients – by understanding their needs.

Behind every successful man is a woman,
what is your percentage in terms of this
contribution?
I don’t believe that it is only my effort.
I believe that the 1000 people working
behind the scenes silently are deserving of
the accolades. I did not go to University,
never got tertiary education and so for
me to believe that one person can do it,
is wrong. This is a professional service
industry so we have our professionals,
the nurses, the receptionists, the doctors,
the other people who are delivering
the service to the patients. They are the
ones following what our visions and our
values are from day one. Our service has
to be accessible, affordable, professional
and trustworthy. Being innovative
and how we deliver things is not the
standard module. And even now with
the migrant population, we have got to
be adaptable and flexible. The success
is in understanding human needs with
empathy and delivering it as a team.
What is your inner strength? Do you believe
in something higher in the spiritual context?
Yes, I do believe that everybody works
hard but there must be somebody above
that you are connected to for that divine
guidance.
For example, There was a vision of a
temple. Roshan Nauhria our very dear
family friend set about raising funds
to build this temple. He came to Kanti,
shared his dream and Kanti immediately
handed over a cheque for donation. But to
gather more funds, it was decided to call
Morari Babu and they managed to secure
more funds for the building. They went
all out putting in their efforts, bought the
land, built the temple and were the first
trustees of the Bhartiya Mandir.
Then Kanti saw that there was no
Hindu temple in the south, so the
Swami Narayana Temple was founded
in Papatoetoe. But by the time the
community had grown so much that
even that was too small from day one.
It is 10 years now and the next stage of
the Community Centre is coming up
which will be able to cater to the bigger
population here. So, to me, it is all guided
by a supreme higher power that makes
things happen through these powerful
visionaries, probably the chosen ones.

What is the most important ritual that you believe in as a
spiritual person?
I believe that in religion, the big thing for me is Seva
(service). I am not as knowledgeable as Kanti, he is an
ocean of deep knowledge. But for me going to the temple,
understanding the jobs that need to be done and doing
it gives me the satisfaction. I am the organiser and I love
to look at all the organising part. I can’t cook, I can’t
photograph but when I am in the Temple, I can peel the
potatoes, I can wash the dishes I can do the organising I
can do the things that need to be done and that gives me
the joy. So someone tells me to put the pink flowers first
and the white flowers next and I go about just doing that.

How will you know if your work as an Advisory Board
member of the Police, both as an activist and as a change
initiator, was successful?
One in three women are abused and I have six
granddaughters. So if I personalise it, then the chances
are too high for me. In the first year from 100 families
being managed from one home, all done with personal
funding, we are now handling 400 cases, we have funding
and have expanded from one to three houses with the
other two houses coming up in Te Atatu and Papakura.
The project support from the police has been amazing,
the government support has been outstanding, but it
has been a hard sell because the question we are always
asked is - why are you dealing with the perpetrators?
Why are you not helping the victims? But my point is the
man is going from one woman to the next to the next.
And until he changes his behaviour, nothing will change.
My biggest success is 80 men have gone back to their
homes and they have realised that with counselling and
getting anger management skills they can avoid putting

A lavish pageant from the eyes of the Designer Duo
Exclusive for Indian News, an interview with the Designers of Padmavat
the Epic Boolywood Story of Honour, Valor & Obsession

How did working on the film “Padmaavat”
evolved you as designers?
There is a metamorphical muse that inspires the design process- which is
further layered with romanticism and nostalgia. Working on a project of
this stature can prove to be quite challenging since the garments play a
significant role in bringing to life the personas of these historical figures,
the cultural influences as well as maintaining the authenticity of period.
Over a period, these characters became our muses and the entire process
left an indelible mark on our own signature aesthetic.
This was you first full-fledged film and what
a dream debut. How was it working with
Sanjay Leela Bhansali who is known for
making impossible possible with his films and
presentations?
Mr Bhansali is a perfectionist in the truest sense. Working with him has
been a fabulously inspirational experience for us as designers. He had
a vision and it was fascinating to see how the characters he envisioned
translated to real people who we interacted with on the sets. Moreover,
our perception of drama in clothes has also undergone a change while
working on the project; how at times 'less is more,' or 'more is less', given
the moment in the storyline; or how various elements need to be layered
for cohesive look that is in sync with the director’s vision.
Was there any pressure
to live up to his
expectations in terms
of right clothes?
Sanjay sir has a very beautiful way
of orchestrating the extremely
detailed and spectacular canvases
he has envisioned on screen.
Thankfully, we were always on
the same page as him and never
really had a clash. His in-depth
knowledge and research on the
period formed the guidelines
which we followed while creating
each look, and each outfit we
created seemed equally important
as well as an opportunity to leave
no stone unturned.
Mughal/ European influences from the garments and enter a ‘pure-
zone’ that Mr. Bhansali envisioned for the character. Initially, our design
team started research by delving into various travellers' accounts and
manuscripts to get an idea of how the lifestyle of the royals used to be
back then.
The old garments of that period…the jama, the farji, the turban, the
pajama underwent certain changes that are not easy to date so we relied
heavily on old manuscripts/ travelers’ accounts and the writings of court
historians and sufi saints such as the 16th century historian Abd-ul-Qadir
Bada'uni for reference when it came to the ornate styling and layering of
the looks. Remarkably, we discovered that the costumes of Awadh were
very different from the ones that were popular in Delhi and we tried to
integrate these small distinctions in our designs.
For the court looks, we got specialist weavers to develop the fabrics that
are gilded with real metal wires. Old archived samples of brocades of
Aurangabad that we found in various museums were commissioned to
various master weavers of today for replication. A lot of the embroidery
and motif references came not only from what all old clothing samples
we could get our hands on but also vintage textiles in the form of
manuscript holders and covers, canopies, wall hangings and bichhonas.

How the research work was done keeping in
mind this was the periodic film?
There is a lot of ambiguity given the period we were dealing with as
not much documentation nor actual textiles/ garments from the period
have survived through the ages. The Calico Museum in Ahmedabad and
the Jaipur museum were a source of great inspiration and study when it
came to the old textiles that were prevalent in the region. We decided to
stick to only organic, natural fabrics such as cottons. mal-mails, silks and
wool; and commissioned weavers from various crafts clusters, especially
in Kota to develop the yardages. The fabrics were then printed in Bagru
and Sanganer(traditional centres of block printing in Rajasthan). Some
of them have motifs which have up to 12 different colours (based on our
research from the museum archives and as many blocks had to be hand
crafted to achieve the effect) while the multi-hued leheriya prints were
based on some 16th century samples archived at the Victoria & Albert
Museum in London. There is a lot of play of surface ornamentation on the
printed textiles which were layered with Varq ka Kamm and traditional
embroideries such as Mukke ka Kaam.

Would you like to share some inputs on how you

visualised the clothes of every character and was
there any reference taken from the real incidences?
Padmavati, as the legends say was renowned for her great poetic beauty
and elegance. A lot of techniques have gone into creating the detailed
looks that are reminiscent of the era and each look had numerous
processes that were used to achieve the overall effect. Our teams got

Given Khilji's nomadic Turkish origins, we did a lot of research on the
costumes and textiles of the belt, right from Afghanistan to Kazakhstan
to the central Asia belt around Turkey. Our own travels also came in
handy as we have, over the years, collected samples of various old
textiles such as Suzanis and Tapestries from flea markets and auctions,
which were great reference points for getting the styling and the look
and feel just right.

What next for Rimple and Harpreet Narula as a

brand?
Now that the movie is out, our plan is to travel, bond with our son,
seek new inspirations and come back recharged. Since our designing
is more intuitive than trend based, we are looking out to do something
new within our own signature aesthetic. As we hail from Punjab, in the
pipelines are collections that will try to imbibe and revive the crafts of the
region, going back to our roots and and offering our audience something
that is a part of our core value system as designers.

Irrfan Khans tumour can be removed surgically
In what could bring respite to Irrfan Khan’s
fans, who are in a state of shock after the actor
revealed that he is diagnosed with Neuro
Endocrine Tumour, a doctor said that former is
a rare disease but is curable.
Dr. Saumitra Rawat, HOD, Surgical
Gastroenterology & Liver Transplant, Sri Ganga
Ram Hospital, talked to reporter on the matter
and gave some insights about its nature and
medication.
Dr Rawat said, Neuro Endocrine Tumour is an
abnormal growth of Neuro-endo cells which are
present in bodies. When there is an abnormal
growth, then it forms a tumor ñ Normally seen in
intestine, pancreas, lung, thyroid and other parts
of the body.
On commenting on Khan’s case, he said, it
depends on the location of the tumour, its size,
and what is its mytotic index.
He further noted that such kind of tumours can
be taken out surgically.
Depending on where the tumour is localized, you
can take it out surgically and the chances of cure
are very high, Dr Rawat explained.
He added that once the procedure is done, the
patient is required to have regular check-ups for
any recurring tumours.

from extreme sweating need to
wear the right clothes and take
certain precautions, so they don’t
smell of body odour which is a
major turn off.
Keeping teeth clean and
having fresh breath is also very
important. It’s an instant turnoff
to meet someone with poor
mouth hygiene as it’s a direct
reflection of poor overall hygiene.
You need to be that good that you
are ready to be kissed.
Footwear:
Wearing nice clean shoes that
blend with the outfit show that
you see every detail and want to
make that effort in showing your
best. Unclean, unmatched and
old shoes can misrepresent you
by showing you as untidy. Pay
attention to socks by choosing
the right colour palette to match
the occasion and blend the outfit
with the shoe.
