Pescadero man gets prison
for lewd acts with minors
DAILY JOURNAL STAFF REPORT
A 71-year-old Pescadero man who pleaded
no contest in February to felony child
molestation for reportedly molesting two of
his daughter’s friends as well as a former res-
ident of his property was sentenced to 10
years in state prison Wednesday, according
to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s
Office.
In custody on $6.4 million bail, Daniel
Miranda received 1,144 days credit for time
served and was also required to register as a
sex offender for life. During what prosecutors
described as a very lengthy and emotional
sentencing hearing, five individuals who had
either been victims of Miranda’s conduct or
members of their families addressed the court
to describe the toll the incidents dating back
to 2002 have taken, according to prosecu-
tors.
In 2014, a young woman reported she had

been molested several times by Miranda, her
friend’s father, during a sleepover at his
home. Another victim, who was also a friend
of Miranda’s daughter, disclosed to the San
Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in 2016 that
Miranda molested her on multiple occasions
in 2010 and 2011 during sleepovers at his
home, according to prosecutors previously.
A former resident on Miranda’s property
also reported being molested by Miranda in
2002 and 2003 when she was contacted by
sheriff’s detectives, according to prosecu-
tors.
Depression, suicidal thoughts and anorex-
ia were among the effects of Miranda’s
behavior victims and their family members
described at his sentencing hearing
Wednesday. Miranda’s daughter also
addressed the court in defense of her father,
claiming the victims were all lying and she
will support him forever, according to prose-
cutors.
Miranda’s defense attorney Nicole
Lambros said her client’s lengthy history of
public service played a role in the plea deal
that was reached with prosecutors last
month, noting he served two tours in the
Vietnam War and worked for 30 years for the
San Francisco Municipal Transportation
Agency before retiring without any com-
plaints lodged against him.
Lambros also noted there was no penetra-
tion or force involved in Miranda’s conduct
and said she felt all parties felt the offer he
took was fair.
“He worked with the public for all those
years and had no criminal history,” she said.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe
acknowledged the sentence Miranda received
Wednesday doesn’t take away the impact of
his actions on his victims and their families.
“He is one of those people that can only be
described as evil,” he said. “There isn’t any
morality in his heart for what he did.”

California auditors say the Department of Motor Vehicles didn’t properly prepare for customers lining up to get new

to issues at California DMV

SACRAMENTO — California’s
Department of Motor Vehicles didn’t
properly prepare for customers lining
up to get new federally approved driv-
ers’ licenses, leading to hourslong
wait times last year, state auditors said
Wednesday.
But the long lines that angered
motorists and state lawmakers alike
merely highlighted significant under-
lying weaknesses including outdated
computers and problems with schedul-
ing appointments, the auditors said.
The finance department auditors said
the DMV had “significant deficiencies
in planning and implementation” as
Californians began updating their
drivers’ licenses to meet new federal
security standards known as Real ID.
Airport security checkpoints won’t
accept cards without special markings
required by the federal government
after Oct. 1, 2020. California residents
must apply in person at DMV offices
to get the new cards.
The resulting delays were symptoms
of the department’s “significant weak-
nesses in its underlying governance
structure and organizational culture,”
auditors found.
They found a long list of problems
including inconsistencies in oversee-
ing field offices, ineffective communi-
cations, poor budgeting, inadequate
staffing of service windows, missed
opportunities to improve customer
service, and a lack of employee train-
ing.
It is difficult for customers to quick-
ly and consistently reserve appoint-
ments, auditors found, with variations
in availability depending on location
and problems with motorists reserving
duplicate appointments.
Outdated computers, poor connec-
tions and inadequate maintenance led
to computer failures that stalled cus-
tomers’ ability to get services, the
auditors said.
“Without strengthening the underly-
ing foundation supporting its opera-
tions, DMV will continue facing chal-
lenges in efficiently and effectively
delivering services to its customers,”
auditors concluded.

audit findings. They are required to
submit a detailed correction plan with-
in 60 days and update it every six
months until the problems are solved.
Acting director Kathleen Webb said
the department is “committed to
reengineering business practices and
reducing wait times” and is already tak-
ing steps including increasing self-
service options and better monitoring
its computer system.
Auditors said the department could
accept credit card payments and use
more text message notifications to
improve customer service.
Webb said the DMV will seek more
money to carry out some of the recom-
mendations.
Republican Assemblyman Jim
Patterson of Fresno said DMV officials
had years to prepare yet started making
Real ID a priority only months before
the rollout in January 2018.
He was upset by findings of delays
due to staffing shortages and schedul-
ing problems and questioned the
department’s claim that wait times are
down to 30 minutes.

California state Senate districts
SACRAMENTO — Residents in two California Senate
districts will vote in June to fill vacancies created by last
fall’s statewide election.
Special primary elections on Tuesday set up June 4 runoff
elections to replace Democrat Ricardo Lara, who was elect-
ed insurance commissioner, and Republican Ted Gaines,
who won a seat on the Board of Equalization.
Republican Assemblymen Brian Dahle of Bieber and
Kevin Kiley of Rocklin, along with Democrat Silke
Pflueger, are clustered near the top in preliminary election
results from Gaines’ massive old Senate District 1, which
stretches from Oregon to south of Lake Tahoe.
The top two vote-getters will advance to the general elec-
tion, regardless of party, because no candidate won more
than half the vote.
Dahle had 28.7 percent of the vote and Kiley 28.5 per-
cent, according to preliminary results from the secretary of
state, while Pflueger was third in the six-member field, with
25.8 percent.
About 41 percent of the district’s voters are registered
Republican, 28 percent Democratic and 23 percent have no
party preference.
Los Angeles looks to break up vast illegal pot sales
LOS ANGELES — Mayor Eric Garcetti said Wednesday
that Los Angeles is considering a major crackdown on ille-
gal marijuana shops that have been bedeviling the city’s
legal marketplace.
The move that could pump tens of millions of dollars into
police enforcement comes as legal shops struggle to turn a
profit while hundreds of illicit storefronts enjoy brisk
sales, thanks to their typically cheaper, tax-free prices.
The legal shops “can’t get undercut every single day by
everybody else that’s out there,” the mayor told reporters at
City Hall.
The Democratic mayor in his second term didn’t put a pre-
cise figure on the spending for the city’s upcoming budget,
but he estimated it would be a ten-fold increase from the cur-
rent year.

DeVos criticized over plan to
cut Special Olympics funding

DeVos became a target on social media
after Democrats slammed her plan to remove
the group’s funding as part of nearly $7 bil-
lion in budget cuts for next year. The Special
Olympics received $17.6 million from the
Education Department this year, roughly 10
percent of its overall revenue.
In a statement responding to criticism,
DeVos said she “loves” the organization’s
work and has “personally supported its mis-
sion.” But she also noted that it’s a private
nonprofit that raises $100 million a year on
its own. Ultimately, she argued, her agency
can’t afford to continue backing it.

“There are dozens of worthy nonprofits
that support students and adults with dis-
abilities that don’t get a dime of federal
grant money,” she said. “Given our current
budget realities, the federal government
cannot fund every worthy program, particu-
larly ones that enjoy robust support from

Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver
on Wednesday pushed back against the pro-
posed cut.
“This is not the old Special Olympics, it’s
not my mom’s Special Olympics in some
ways,” he said on MSNBC. “This is a new
Special Olympics. We are actively engaged
in the educational purposes that the country
has articulated at the federal level.”
Woman who died
in house fire identified
A one-alarm fire in a single-family home
in Redwood City last weekend claimed the
life of a woman who has now been identified
by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office
as Catherine Case, 57, of Redwood City.
An initial emergency call reporting the
fire was made at 10:08 p.m. Saturday, with
firefighters arriving four minutes later at
556 Jackson Ave., according to Redwood
City Fire Chief Stan Maupin. The kitchen
blaze was extinguished by 10:36 p.m.
The fire also injured a man, who was taken
to a hospital and is expected to survive,
Maupin said.
No one else lived at the single-family res-
idence. The majority of the damage was con-
fined to the kitchen, though smoke damage
was present in other areas of the structure.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fort Funston is part of the federal Golden
Gate National Recreation Area and is about
10 miles south of the Golden Gate Bridge. It
is set above steep cliffs that are 200 feet
above the beach.

killed in crash identified
According to the Santa Clara County med-
ical examiner’s office, the victim of a fatal
car crash in unincorporated San Mateo
County earlier this month has been identi-
fied as Inez Barranti, 86, of Millbrae.
The crash occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on

Springs Golf Course.
A white 2016 Volkswagen, driven by a 16-
year-old girl and carrying a 15-year-old
female passenger, was turning from the
northbound highway off-ramp onto Golf
Course Drive. The Volkswagen struck a
2002 Hyundai Santa Fe that had been travel-
ing east, causing it to roll over and come to
a rest on its left side.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 63-year-old
man, and his passengers, Barranti and an
89-year-old man, were taken to Stanford
Hospital. Barranti died at the hospital,
while the driver was treated for moderate
injuries. The 89-year-old passenger had a
complaint of pain but was otherwise unin-
jured.

Deadline approaches for literary
artists to compete at county fair
Literary artists including bloggers, poets,
short story writers, lyric songwriters, pod-
cast and audiobook writers are invited to
enter their works at the San Mateo County
Fair’s sanctioned literary show. The con-
tests are open to anyone, regardless of resi-
dence, but the deadline to enter is April 1
before midnight.
Contestants must be 16 years and older.
Younger literary artists can participate in
the youth exhibits division.
Through a partnership between the San
Francisco Peninsula Writers and the San
Mateo County Fair, the literary entries will
be showcased in the fair’s Fine Arts
Galleria, an 18, 000 square-foot exhibit
area, complete with a stage and seating for
125 guests. 
In addition to the literary contest divi-
sion, other San Mateo County Fair contest
divisions include agriculture, creative home
arts, culinary, fine arts, floral arts, gardens
and landscape, youth exhibits, youth live-
stock, horses and STEAM (science, technol-
ogy, engineering, art and math). Contest

Trump assembling an army of operatives for re-election

WASHINGTON — In 2016, President
Donald Trump compared Hillary Clinton’s
campaign to the lumbering federal bureau-
cracy. Now he’s building one of his own.
From an office tower across the Potomac
River from Washington, from the bowels of
the Republican National Committee’s head-
quarters on Capitol Hill and from field
offices across the country, Trump is assem-
bling an army of operatives to fight for vic-
tory in what stands to be a legacy-defining
political battle. Even with a sea of still-
unfilled desks, his 2020 campaign is
already unrecognizable from the fly-by-
night operation of the last effort, when
Trump won the White House despite his
inexperienced campaign team.
Trump may still consider himself his own
best strategist and communicator, but this
time he’s leaving nothing to chance.
Trump’s 2020 effort is melding the RNC and
his presidential campaign into one func-
tional entity, with the two organizations
sharing staff, resources and data in what
they argue is the perfect model of the mod-
ern integrated campaign.

cient campaign operation in American his-
tory with the ability to reach more voters
than ever before,” said Trump campaign
manager Brad Parscale.
Still, the constant and greatest source of
uncertainty for the new effort remains
Trump — his disdain for feeling managed
and his unwavering belief in his own gut

instincts above all else.
“Everything the campaign does is to com-
plement and reinforce the candidate, it’s not
a substitute for the candidate,” said GOP
strategist Alex Conant. “The candidate
needs to be in sync with the campaign.”
Trump’s attacks on the late Sen. John
McCain of Arizona earlier this month
marked an example of how a candidate could
unsettle his own political effort.
Driving the 2020 operation is Parscale, a
confidant of Trump son-in-law Jared
Kushner, who is the White House overseer
of the campaign. Parscale brings an unusual
pedigree to the position: He did website
work for Trump’s golf properties before
being hired to run Trump’s digital efforts in
2016, when his targeted Facebook ads
helped drive Trump voters in the Midwest to
the polls.
A priority of both Parscale and Kushner,
aides said, is reducing the disruptive staff
turnover that defined Trump’s first White
House bid and continued through his first
two years in the White House. Key cam-
paign hires have had to pass muster with
both men. And Parscale, with his 13-month
tenure in the job, already has lasted longer
than any of Trump’s three 2016 campaign
heads.
One reason that Trump is more open to a
bulky campaign apparatus this time: the
RNC’s fundraising prowess. Trump self-
funded his 2016 campaign to the tune of
more than $66 million, but he hasn’t put
any money into his campaign since
November 2016, and officials say that, so
far, he doesn’t intend to.

US judge blocks Medicaid work rules in blow to Trump

WASHINGTON — A federal judge ruled
Wednesday that Medicaid work requirements
undermine the program’s mission of provid-
ing health care for the needy, dealing a blow
to the Trump administration’s efforts to
push the poor toward self-sufficiency.
U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg in
Washington, D.C., blocked work require-
ments for low-income people in two states
— Arkansas and Kentucky. He found that
the states’ requirements pose numerous
obstacles to getting health care that have
gone unresolved by federal and state offi-
cials.
Boasberg sent the federal Health and
Human Services Department back to the
drawing board. But he stopped short of
deciding the central question of whether
work requirements are incompatible with
Medicaid, a federal-state program that tradi-
tionally allows states broad leeway to set
benefits and eligibility.
HHS approval of the Arkansas work
requirement was “arbitrary and capricious
because it did not address...whether and how
the project would implicate the ‘core’ objec-
tive of Medicaid: the provision of medical
coverage to the needy,” wrote Boasberg.
The judge used similar language in his rul-
ing on Kentucky.
The Trump administration said it would
press on despite the ruling, but did not spec-
ify its next steps.
Work requirements are already in effect in
Arkansas, but Kentucky’s program has been
on hold because of lawsuits. Both states
want “able-bodied” adults who get health
insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s
Medicaid expansion to work, study, volun-
teer, or participate in “community engage-
ment” activities.

WASHINGTON — The battle over releasing the special

counsel’s report intensified Wednesday as Democrats in
Congress insisted Attorney General William Barr must
quickly release its full findings. Barr said he’ll release at
least a partial version in April.
Skepticism mounted over Barr’s four-page synopsis,
which was released Sunday and found no evidence President

The push came as the House moved ahead with its own
oversight of the Trump administration, including an
Intelligence Committee hearing scheduled Thursday on
Russia’s role in the 2016 election.
Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the chairman of the House
Oversight Committee, said he was “disappointed” Barr
would take weeks, not days, to release the report.
“The president has now an opportunity for weeks, it
sounds like, to do these victory laps,” said Cummings, not-
ing that Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, is among those
headed to jail as a result of the probe. “Cohen goes to jail,
the president runs a victory lap.”
The attorney general told the chairman of the Senate
Judiciary Committee, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., that
he’s combing through Mueller’s report and removing clas-
sified, grand jury and other information in hopes of releas-
ing it to Congress.
Graham told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he
had dinner the previous evening with Barr, who said he is
willing to testify before the committee after he sends
Congress the report.

Man pleads guilty to
kidnapping Jayme Closs, killing parents
BARRON, Wis. — A Wisconsin man pleaded guilty
Wednesday to kidnapping 13-year-old Jayme Closs and
killing her parents, in a move that spares the girl held cap-
tive in a remote cabin for three months from the possible
trauma of having to testify at his trial.
Jake Patterson, 21, sniffled and his voice caught as he
pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional homicide and
one count of kidnapping. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors
dropped a count of armed burglary. Patterson faces up to life
in prison when he is sentenced May 24; Wisconsin does not
have the death penalty.
In a bizarre remark as he left the courtroom, Patterson
turned back and said “Bye, Jayme.” His victim wasn’t there.
Patterson had said he would plead guilty in a letter sent
this month to a Minneapolis TV station, saying he didn’t
want the Closs family “to worry about a trial.”
Patterson admitted kidnapping Jayme after killing her
parents, James and Denise Closs, on Oct. 15 at the family’s
home near Barron, about 90 miles northeast of
Minneapolis. Jayme escaped in January, after 88 days in
Patterson’s cabin in near the small, isolated town of
Gordon, some 60 miles from her home.
Parkland looks beyond
therapy to reach teens after suicides
PARKLAND, Fla. — Days after the suicides of two student
survivors of the Parkland school shooting, community
leaders were frantically putting extra services in place
Wednesday to try to connect with those hard-to-reach stu-
dents who are averse to traditional therapy.
A local nonprofit had planned to open a teen wellness
center near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on
April 30, offering free activities like karaoke night, yoga,
kickboxing and acupuncture for students who weren’t inter-
ested in talking to a therapist. But Eagle’s Haven opened
ahead of schedule Monday to address emergency needs of
students and their families.
“One teen just wanted to cry yesterday and didn’t want to
talk. Another teen wanted to tell his story about the actual
shooting,” said Julie Gordon, a licensed therapist and pro-
gram director of Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options,
the nonprofit behind Eagle’s Haven.
Guilty plea to hate crimes
in deadly car attack at rally
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In a case that stirred racial
tensions across the country, a self-avowed white suprema-
cist pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal hate crime charges
in a deadly attack at a white nationalist rally in Virginia,
admitting that he intentionally plowed his speeding car
into a crowd of anti-racism protesters, killing a woman and
injuring dozens.
James Alex Fields Jr. of Maumee, Ohio, pleaded guilty to
29 of 30 federal charges stemming from the “Unite the
Right” rally in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017.
Under a plea agreement, federal prosecutors will not seek
the death penalty against Fields and will dismiss the one
count that carried death as a possible punishment. The
charges he pleaded guilty to call for life in prison under fed-
eral sentencing guidelines.

Prime Minister May says she’ll
step down if Brexit deal OK’d

Theresa May offered up her job in
exchange for her Brexit deal
Wednesday, telling colleagues she
would quit within weeks if the agree-
ment was passed and Britain left the
European Union.
May’s dramatic concession that
“there is a desire for a new approach -
and new leadership” was a last-ditch
effort to bring enough reluctant col-
leagues on board to push her twice-
rejected EU divorce deal over the line.
It looked like it might not be
enough, as a key Northern Ireland
party said it would not be supporting
the deal.
May’s announcement came as law-
makers held an inconclusive series of
votes on alternatives to her unpopular
deal. It was the first step in an attempt
by Parliament to break the Brexit
deadlock and stop the country from
tumbling out of the bloc within weeks
with no exit plan in place.
May has been under mounting pres-
sure from pro-Brexit members of her
Conservative Party to quit. Many
Brexiteers accuse her of negotiating a
bad divorce deal that leaves Britain
too closely tied to the bloc after it
leaves.
Several have said they would sup-
port the withdrawal deal if another
leader took charge of the next stage of
negotiations, which will determine

Stocks stumble, erasing some of prior day’s gains

drove a broad slide in U. S. stocks
Wednesday, erasing some of the market’s
solid gains from a day earlier.
The sell-off put the Dow Jones Industrial
Average on track to end the month with a
loss and marked the second drop for the
benchmark S&P 500 index this week.
While U.S. stocks remain on track to fin-
ish the quarter with solid gains, investors
remain anxious over the slowing global
economy and worrisome signals coming
from the bond market.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year
Treasury note continued to decline
Wednesday, dropping to 2.38 percent from
2.41 percent late Tuesday. That remained
below the yield on the three-month Treasury
bill. When that kind of “inversion” in bond
yields occurs, economists fear it may signal
a recession within the coming year.
“The S&P 500 attempted to rally right out
of the open, but then started to give back
ground, ” said Jeramey Lynch, global
investment specialist at J. P. Morgan
Private Bank. “The focus still continues to
be on rates, particularly in the lower end of
the curve, and with rates still heading down
the market is having a tough time bucking
that trend.”
The S&P 500 dropped 13.09 points, or
0.5 percent, to 2,805.37. Even with the lat-
est slide, the index is up 11.9 percent so far
in 2019, an unusually strong start to the
year.
The Dow slid 32.14 points, or 0.1 per-
cent, to 25,625.59. That came after a day of
wavering, having been up as much as 100
points and down as much as 232 points.

Wednesday awarded $80 million in dam-
ages to a California man who blamed
Roundup weed killer for his cancer, in a
case that his attorneys say could help deter-
mine the fate of hundreds of similar law-

returned its verdict in favor of Edwin
Hardeman, 70, who said he used Roundup
products to treat poison oak, overgrowth
and weeds on his San Francisco Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook is extend-
ing its ban on hate speech to prohibit the
promotion and support of white national-
ism and white separatism.
The company previously allowed such
material even though it has long banned
white supremacists. The social network said
Wednesday that it didn’t apply the ban pre-
viously to expressions of white national-
ism because it linked such expressions with

science and the conclusions of regulators
worldwide that support the safety of our
glyphosate-based herbicides and that they
are not carcinogenic,” according to a state-
ment from Bayer, which acquired Monsanto
last year.

Three things were learned during the

Carlmont-Hillsdale boys’ volleyball match.
One, the top of the Peninsula Athletic
League is as competitive as its been in its
four years of existence.
Two, not much separates the league-lead-
ing Scots and the second-place Knights.
And three, Carlmont is just a little bit bet-
ter than Hillsdale. The Scots took the lead
late in all three games as they went on to
post a 25-23, 25-20, 31-29 sweep of the
Knights Wednesday evening to take control
of the PAL race at the midway point of the
season.
With the win, Carlmont (9-0 PAL) pulls
two games clear of Hillsdale (7-2) and one
game ahead of San Mateo (8-1).
With nine more matches to go, however,
Carlmont head coach Michael Lapuz was not
looking any further ahead than the Knights.
“”Really, just wanted to stay focused.
Don’t get ahead of ourselves and worry
about how other teams played against some-
one else,” Lapuz said. “We had to come out
and and play every single point.”
Despite being a sweep for the Scots, the
result could have easily gone the other way
as all three games were tied in the later
stages. Each time, however, it was
Carlmont that earned the breaks, got the
points and pulled out the wins.
“The difference came down to the team
that made the most number of errors,” said
Hillsdale head coach Dwight Crump. “In
each case, we made two errors at the wrong
time.”
In the first game, a defensive block for a
point from Hillsdale’s Noah MacLean tied it
at 20. Carlmont went back ahead 21-20 on
an Ethan Mayoss kill off a Knights’ touch.
But Hillsdale hurt its chances with back to
back errors — a net violation and a hitting
error — allowed the Scots to take control.
They built a 24-21 advantage before one
last gasp from the Knights, who got a kill
from Jack Vallee and a Carlmont hitting
error to close to 24-23, but the Scots closed
out Hillsdale on the next point.

Before European soccer became a
household brand in the United States,
there were a handful of big-name clubs
that true soccer fans knew: Liverpool,
Bayern Munich, Real Madrid.
On that list as well was Juventus FC,
arguably — and I stress the word
“arguably” — the biggest club in Italy,
one that was originally founded in 1897.
In 1956, the Juventus Soccer Club was
established in Redwood City, the
founders naming
the club after their
favorite Italian
team.
The two clubs
had never had any
kind of relation-
ship — until now.
The Peninsula’s
Juventus club
announced Tuesday
a partnership with
the Italian giant,
one that will help
local soccer talent
develop, with the ultimate goal of send-
ing the top players to play in Europe.
The partnership was put together with
the help of Juventus-Redwood City gen-
eral manager Anders Perez, who simply
reached out to the Italian club to see if
there was any interest in forming a part-
nership.
“I’m about looking to improve the
experience for the player,” said Perez,
who has been involved with the Redwood
City club for the last five years. “What
more could we (as a club) do? We have a
top academy program, we’re sending
players to college and the pros. The last
thing (to do) was sending players to
Europe.
“We were fortunate enough to connect
with a top club.”

Isabel Bojorquez Emmons’ grand slam high-
lighted a five-run second inning for Mercy-
Burlingame (5-0 WBAL, 6-5 overall).
Crystal Springs (2-3, 3-3) scored single runs
in the second, fourth and fifth innings to close
to 5-3, but Mercy put the game away with a
four-run sixth, with Karla Joachin Alvarez
coming up with the big hit when she homered.
Hailey Armstrong picked up the win for the
Crusaders, allowing four runs on six hits and
striking out seven in throwing a complete
game.
San Mateo 5, Half Moon Bay 3
Extra innings were needed to determine a
winner.
Both teams were tied 1-1 going into the
final two innings of regulation. In the top
of the sixth and seventh innings, the
Bearcats (2-1 PAL Bay, 4-2 overall) scored
and gave themselves a two-run lead going
into the final frame. The Cougars (0-5, 3-5-
1) wouldn’t go down without a fight and tied
the game up at 3-3 to send the game into
extras.
San Mateo wasted no time and scored two
runs in the top of the eighth and then shut
down the Cougars in the bottom of the
inning to secure the 5-3 victory.
Bearcats sophomore Giuliana Selvitella
had a good day at the plate and led her team
with three hits and one RBI. Freshman
Bethany Shih got the win and gave up three
runs on eight hits, four strikeouts and
pitched a complete game.
Woodside 2, Capuchino 1
Runs were at a premium as both starting
pitchers put together solid performances in
this defensive battle.
With the game tied 1-1 going into the
bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats (2-1
PAL Bay, 3-3 overall) scored the winning
run in walk-off fashion.
The Mustangs (1-3, 3-6) played tough,
but they were one or two timely hits away
from either tying or potentially winning
this one. Woodside freshman Madi Truesdale
pitched a stellar complete game and only
surrendered one run on four hits and one
strikeout.
Carlmont 11, Hillsdale 0
The mercy rule was enforced after the
Scots (3-0 PAL Bay, 6-3 overall) scored nine
of their 11 runs in the third and fourth
innings. The combination of getting

walked six times and having 12 hits as a
team is what led Carlmont to victory.
The Knights (3-1, 7-3) couldn’t sustain
any rhythm offensively and only managed
to get three hits.

Tigers sophomore pitcher Ashleigh Dean
pitched a remarkable game and gave up no
runs on two hits and struck out seven in five
innings of work.
Both teams failed to score in the first cou-
ple innings, but Notre Dame blew the game
wide open in the third when they secured six
runs.
Notre Dame (4-1 WBAL Foothill, 5-2
overall) had 15 hits as a team, and Isabella
Parks led the way by going a perfect 4 for 4
at the plate. Right fielder Sophia Dinelli
also had a nice game by acquiring two hits
and three RBIs.

Menlo-Atherton 13, Mitty 10
The Bears opened up a 9-1 lead at halftime
and then had to hold on to beat the
Monarchs in a WBAL Foothill Division
match.
Mitty (2-3-1 WBAL Foothill, 7-3-1 over-
all) closed to 12-10 with 45 seconds left
before Audrey Koren iced the game with her
third goal of the game.
Leiney Paul and Hannah Shaw also each

The Wildcats (2-1 PAL Ocean, 6-4 overall)
capitalized on some sloppy Bearcat pitching,
and turned it into four runs in the first two
innings.
Five of the eight runs San Mateo (2-1, 8-3)
surrendered were earned. Eight walks and two
errors contributed to the three unearned runs.
The Bearcats’ inability to find the strike
zone consistently led to multiple Woodside
runners finding themselves in scoring posi-
tion. San Mateo managed six hits as a team,
but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the run
production of the Wildcats.

Clem Daniels dies at age 83
OAKLAND — Former Oakland Raiders run-
ning back and AFL all-time leading rusher
Clem Daniels has died at age 83.
The team announced Daniels’ death late
Monday night but did not give a cause.
Daniels played nine seasons of pro football
starting with the Dallas Texans of the AFL in
1960. He spent his next seven seasons with
the Raiders where he had his greatest success
before finishing his career with the San
Francisco 49ers in the NFL in 1968.
Daniels’ best season came in 1963 in the
first year under coach Al Davis. Daniels led the
AFL with 1,099 yards rushing in 14 games and
also had a league-best 22.8 yards per catch as

signed free agent quarterback Landry Jones.

Jones was originally a fourth-round pick by

Pullman. Kent was 58-98 in his five
seasons in charge and 22-68 in Pac-

six seasons at Columbia, capping
his run in New York by leading the
Lions to the CIT title in 2016.
The Dons took little time to fill
the void. A second person familiar
with the hiring says associate coach
Todd Golden will be promoted to
replace Smith. Golden will receive a
five-year contract. The person
spoke on condition of anonymity
because the deal hadn’t been
announced.
Golden started his coaching career
at Columbia in 2013-14 before
working for two years at Auburn. He
has spent the past three seasons at
USF. Golden also played in the West
Coast Conference for Saint Mary’s.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kevin Durant had the
best shooting night of his career to help the
Golden State Warriors take the outright
Western Conference lead.
Durant and Stephen Curry each scored 28
points, with Durant going 12 of 13 from the
field, and the Golden State Warriors beat the
Memphis Grizzlies 118-103 on Wednesday
night.
Curry also had 10 rebounds, and DeMarcus
Cousins added 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors broke a tie with idle Denver for
the top spot in the West.

second time (2009) since the bracket expand-
ed in 1985. That’s too bad for the upstarts, but

basketball this weekend.

Durant scored seven straight points in a 9-
0 run that made it 100-92 midway through
the fourth quarter, part of Golden State
pulling away at the end, outscoring Memphis
29-19 in the fourth.
“He was picking and choosing his spots
early on, facilitating,” Warriors forward
Draymond Green said about Durant. “And
then, when we needed him the most, he just
took the game over offensively and got
buckets for us. So, it was a great night for
him, and we needed it. That was a tough
game.”

Knights went on to commit three straight
errors. A Mayoss kill and a Maxwell Jung
service ace gave the Scots a commanding
20-16 lead. Mayoss punctuated the second-
set win with a kill for a 20-25 win.
Carlmont needed overtime in game 3 to
complete the sweep as Hillsdale went down
swinging. This time it was the Knights who
got the late surge. Down 21-19, Hillsdale
reeled off four unanswered points to take a
23-21 lead. A Carlmont net violation gave
the Knights game point, 24-22 and the
serve, but a miss to a wide-open court kept
the Scots alive. A Jung block at the net tied
the game at 24-all.
Then the Scots turned to Mayoss, who
scored their final three points and forced a
Hillsdale hitting error on match point.
Hillsdale was tasked with trying to con-
trol two of the best hitters in the league in
outside hitters Mayoss and Jung. Mayoss
had a monster game, finishing with a match-
high 23 kills. Jung added 13 kills.
And yet, the Knights’ defense did a decent
job of containing the two power hitters.
But when the Scots needed a point or to
change momentum, Mayoss and Jung were
their go-to players.
“When we’re in trouble, we look to them,”
Lapuz said. “They can usually convert.”

looking for talent. Not only to fill its vari-
ous teams, but also as a way to make
money by selling talent to other clubs

At the same time, local soccer players
will benefit from the training and technical
support the big club can provide.
“In early December (of 2018) we reached
out to them and piqued their interest. …
They sent a scout-slash-technical director
to our facility … and he saw we had some-
thing,” Perez said. “What they’ll provide
for us is coaching methodology. In Europe,
they’re way more advanced in developing
players. We’ll have someone oversee our
technical staff, who has worked with the
academy in [Italy]. We can now also begin
to take our teams to Italy for seven-to-10-

day trips and train in the actual complex
where the team trains.
“The last thing is choosing the top play-
ers to join the team in Italy.”
The Redwood City organization has now
been rebranded “Juventus Academy Silicon
Valley,” which is one of five academies the
main club sponsors, joining clubs in
Houston, Los Angeles, New York and
Miami.
“By planting academies all over the
world, and they’re not the only club to do
it, they are about trying to acquire talent at
a very low cost,” Perez said.
Juventus Academy Silicon Valley will
have one advantage over all the other acad-
emies the club sponsors, however. The
Redwood City organization won’t have to
change their name, logo or their color
scheme.
“For them (the parent club), it’s all about
the product. And at the end, the product is
good football,” Perez said.

state championships last weekend in Tulare

batter in a playoff game.
But beyond all the shifts, analytics and
social media outreach, here’s the best way to
tell Major League Baseball has zoomed into
a new era: There’s not a single active player
left from the 20th century.
Not one.
Adrian Beltre and Bartolo Colon were the
last, the Elias Sports Bureau said. And with
all 30 teams set to play Thursday — from
Bryce Harper’s home debut at Citizens Bank
Park to Mookie Betts and the champion
Boston Red Sox visiting Seattle — this
year MLB becomes the first of the four
major sports without someone still around
who played in the 1900s.
The last time that was true in the big
leagues? Back before even the World Series

already having played their opening day
across the world: Building on last year.
Oakland lost its first two games of the sea-
son to the Seattle Mariners in Tokyo.
“The second year is difficult and these
guys know that they have to work even
harder and commit even harder to stay where
we are, but if you asked our guys last year if
we could be in the position we are this year
everybody would take it, so they’re embrac-
ing it,” manager Bob Melvin said.
Oakland boasts reigning majors home run
leader Khris Davis, who had 48 home runs
and a career-high 123 RBIs in the A’s 97-win
season. They lost to New York in the wild
card game.
Now, the A’s are determined to take that
further — and make a deep postseason run.
“It kind of gave us that taste last year and
gave us the confidence that we can compete
with the top teams in the league,” Gold
Glove first baseman Matt Olson said. “We

just want to keep it rolling this year.”
Olson will be sidelined for what is expect-
ed to be about a month after undergoing sur-
gery on his right hand last Friday. He was
injured when he got hit by a foul tip in his
final at-bat during last Thursday’s 5-4, 12-
inning loss to the Mariners in Japan.
The Gold Glove first baseman played all
162 games last year in his first full major
league season, hitting 29 homers and driv-
ing in 85 runs while batting .247. Along
with Davis and third baseman Matt
Chapman’s 24 homers, the A’s lineup
cleared the fences 227 times in 2018 —
third-most in baseball behind the Yankees
(267) and Dodgers (235).
In Olson’s absence, the A’s will count on
Mark Canha at first and new second baseman
Jurickson Profar, who can play multiple
positions.
“The good thing is that we do have some
versatile guys and guys that can be even
more productive with some consistent at-
bats,” Melvin said. “There’s certain guys
that you feel like are a little bit more
replaceable than others. He’s a tough one,
although we do have guys we like a lot. But
the left-handed bat is a little bit of an issue.”

tantly, we’ll focus on trying to win some ball-
games. I’ve made that drive to the ballpark
quite a few times, so I look forward to getting
the season going. I’ll probably have some
moments there and think about some great
times there, and also some battles we’ve had
with them.”
Bochy played for the Padres when they made
it to the World Series in 1984, losing in five
games to Detroit, and was their manager in the
World Series in 1998, when they were swept
by the New York Yankees. That 1998 season
was the impetus that helped get Petco Park
built.
The Padres hope to return to the World Series
sooner rather than later. They showed they are
serious about moving from rebuilding to con-
tending by signing Machado early in spring
training and then adding Tatis Jr., the prized
prospect in what’s generally considered base-
ball’s top farm system, to the big league ros-
ter.
What did the Padres learn about Machado in
his first month with the team?
“Good person. Good teammate,” said man-
ager Andy Green, who’s starting his fourth
season with the Padres. “Fun to be around.

everybody. Very approachable. A good per-
son. He’s a good baseball player too, but I
already knew that.”
Green spoke glowingly about Tatis Jr. even
before he was added to the opening day roster.
“He’s young obviously. He’s a special tal-
ent. Incredibly athletic,” Green said. “You
watch him run the bases and you see real quick-
ly there is real power there. Comes out in
bursts at time where you’re blown away by it
and there are times it’s just hustle beating
other teams. I think that’s been really posi-
tive. His improvement on the defensive side
is the best thing for me. From where he was
last year in spring training to where he is this
year, if he takes one more leap like that he has
a chance to be one of the absolute best in the
game at that position.”
Tatis’ father, who played in the major
leagues, was ecstatic when his son called him
with the news of his promotion.
“It’s awesome for him,” the senior Tatis said

and tried to run away from the scene, but
police were allegedly able to apprehend
him. He allegedly spit at officers and head-
butted the glass of one of the patrol vehi-
cles, according to prosecutors.
Hernandez allegedly told police, “I’m
sorry, I faked the whole thing,” according
to prosecutors.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said
Hernandez does have a previous record in
San Mateo County and will next appear in
court April 9 for preliminary hearing. He
remains in custody on $100, 000 bail,
according to prosecutors.

Paul previously pegged the community
benefits package at $50 million, but that
number included philanthropic contribu-
tions to local organizations that have
already been made and are not contingent
on project approval.
The 27-acre site, once home to the
Malibu Grand Prix entertainment center
and now mostly vacant, is zoned for indus-
trial uses. A general plan amendment and
zoning change would be required for the
office proposal to move forward.
Adam Alberti of Singer and Associates,
which is representing Paul, said housing is
simply not possible on the site because of
soil contamination, deed restrictions and
other constraints.
At a meeting Feb. 11, councilmembers
and numerous residents blasted Paul’s pro-
posal for exacerbating the region’s
jobs/housing imbalance and traffic con-
gestion, among other impacts. Most coun-
cilmembers were also opposed to granting
a general plan amendment.
“We heard the council so we devised
something different, ” Alberti said. “We
think we’ve come up with a project that is
less impactful or equal to anything else
that can be built there by existing zoning
that maintains a ton of community bene-
fit.”
The revised plans include three office
buildings — two of which are six stories
tall and one seven stories tall — plus the
amenities building collectively totaling
about 800,150 square feet. The plans also
propose just one parking structure as well
as an indoor/outdoor community center

San Mateo County History Museum Teams
Up with Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame

I
f you put the Peninsula in the state of
Wyoming, this area alone would
dominate the sports scene of the entire
region. This was John Horgan’s
response when I asked about the history of
athletic prowess in San Mateo County and
the Palo Alto area. Football, baseball,
swimming, figure skating, tennis, track &
field -- you name the sport -- and this Bay
Area region is a powerhouse any way you
slice it.
That is why in 1989 Horgan, a Bay Area
Sports writer and editor, and his colleagues
at the (now gone) San Mateo Times wanted
to launch a Sports Hall of Fame for San
Mateo County. In conjunction with the
centennial of the paper, the group began
what is now an annual tradition of
celebrating local sports stars, coaches and
others who have had an impact on the
region’s athletic scene.
This year -- in partnership with the San
Mateo County History Museum in the Old
Courthouse in downtown Redwood City,
where the now named, Peninsula Hall of
Fame plaques are on display -- the
ceremony will take place within the History
Museum with a hosted reception in its upper
rotunda. The building is impressive, with
beautiful tiles and detail, and the day I
visited school groups could be heard
echoing through the majestic building. The
event will take place on Thursday evening,
April 25.
The Master of Ceremonies will be
KNBR-Radio baseball talk-show host Marty
Lurie. Lurie, a former attorney and Bay
Area legend, is an endless font of baseball
knowledge. A fixture on KNBR, Lurie gives
his take on the pre and post game, taking
calls from the devoted Giants fan base. If
you love baseball, you’ll love listening to
Marty Lurie. Peninsula sports journalist and
historian John Horgan will introduce the
inductees, who will be given an opportunity
to address the audience. Prior inductees
include John Madden, Keith Hernandez,
This Year’s Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

Lynn Swann, Barry Bonds, Jeremy Lin and
Tom Brady. Female athletes like Beatrice
Godoy and Zada Taft described as the
“Mother of Open Water Swims” grace the
walls of the Hall of Fame. Zada, together
with her husband Ray, taught more than
10,000 Peninsula youngsters to swim at
their little school on 40th Avenue in south
San Mateo and were a longtime swimming
institution in San Mateo County, both
started swimming competitively in 1933.
They have both passed on but their legacy
lives on. Anyone can nominate athletes or
coaches. Athletes must have been out of
High School for seven years and coaches
can be nominated at any time. A small
committee determines the annual roster.
This years inductees:
Nicole Carroll Lewis/ College of San Mateo
A world-class javelin thrower who starred
at CSM and Fresno State, she was a
two-time American champion and a member
of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.
Pat Lewis/ Mills, Oceana, Jefferson High
An excellent track and field coach for 50
years on the Peninsula, he specialized in
tutoring male and female athletes in
throwing events (shot put and discus).
Gino Della Libera/ San Mateo High
A football and track and field standout, he
took his considerable skills to Arizona State
University where he was an integral part of
an undefeated 1957 Sun Devil football
team.
Eric Reveno/ Menlo School
A basketball state champion at Menlo
School, he later played at Stanford and
became the head coach at Portland
University, earning West Coast Conference
Coach of the Year honors.
Tod Spieker/ Menlo-Atherton High
An outstanding swimmer at
Menlo-Atherton and UCLA, and later in
masters' age-group competition, he has had

a major impact on aquatics locally and
nationally.
John Ward/Carlmont High
A past member of the San Mateo County
Board of Supervisors, he has created and
maintained a comprehensive website that
charts the long history of Northern
California semi-pro/amateur baseball.
The reception on Thursday April 25th will
begin at 5:30 p.m. with the program to start
at 6:15.
The cost is $35 per person in advance, $40
at the door.
Those buying two tickets will be given a
one-year membership in the San Mateo
County Historical Association (valued at
$50). Proceeds will benefit the maintenance
and upgrading of the Sports Hall of Fame
exhibits.

The San Mateo County History Museum is
located at 2200 Broadway within the
109-year-old "Old Courthouse" in Redwood
City. It features exhibits related to the use of
natural resources, suburban development,
ethnic experience and entrepreneurial
achievement on the Peninsula from the time
of the Ohlone Indian through today. The
Museum is open every day except Monday,
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On the day I met both John Horgan and
Mitch Postel, President at San Mateo
County Historical Association, the Museum
was abuzz. I got a lesson, in not only the
colorful history of San Mateo County, but a
chronicle of the demise of the
subscription-based local newspapers and the
day-to-day coverage of local athletic scene.
There is now plenty of free media but one of
the many things that has suffered is the
coverage of local High School and College
sports. The Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame is
a passion project for Horgan and a
remarkable testimony to the area’s sports
accomplishments. I asked why this area is
such a hotbed of athletic talent and the

grooming of sports stars. The answer
dovetails with the history of the region.
A county seated between San Francisco
and San Jose, San Mateo was well situated
mid-20th century. Post WWII families
moved from the cities and flocked to the
region looking for space, safety and a
thriving suburban community to support
their growing families. Active kids, great
weather and location conspired to create a
sort of sports laboratory with the incredible
bookends of Stanford University and UC
Berkeley. What evolved into the Silicon
Valley -- a vague geographical area
including San Mateo County -- became an
incubator for excellence in tech, bio-tech
and concurrently sports! The economic
vitality and culture of innovation of the
region seeped into the sports realm and vice
versa, to become a globally recognized
realm.

tickets to the Hall of Fame event, you
