PLASTIC (PVC) COVER BLOCKS

Providing and ensuring adequate and uniform cover to steel reinforcement in the construction
activity is very vital from the view point of DURABILITY of the structure.

After meticulous study, analysis and experiments, we have developed application oriented
injection molded plastic cover blocks to meet the requirements of strength, dimensional stability
and ease of handling in harsh and extreme site conditions of the construction industry. We offer
complete range of cover blocks for varied applications.

SALIENT FEATURES:-

 MADE IN VERSATILE ENGINEERING PLASTIC MATERIAL.

 ROBUST AND STURDY TO TAKE MAIN REINFORCEMENT LOADS.
 CONTOUR CUT-OUT AND MAT FINISHED FOR EXCELLENT BONDING WITH CONCRETE.
 DIMENSIONAL STABILITY.
 EFFICIENCY IN INSTALLATION.
 TECHNICAL AND COMMERCIAL ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL METHODS.

BLOCK TYPE COVERS (Item Code BB)

Essentially used for bottom/side applications, providing cover to main reinforcement
directly/via stirrups. These cover blocks are designed for stability to avoid dislodging due to
vibration during concreting.

VERSATILE ADJUSTABLE CONE SPACERS (Item Code SSV)

Essentially used across width for tying opposite shuttering sides to maintain perfect thickness of
wall/tunnel form, sheer walls, long columns, deep beams, bridge piers, etc. The end cones are
reusable. These end cone spacers are specially designed for efficient performance including
installation and removal. The studs of Ø upto 18mm can be accommodated through the cone
spacer.

NOTE:- DIMENSIONAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALL TYPES OF COVER BLOCKS ARE CONFORMING
TO “INDIAN STANDARDS.”

TECHNICAL NOTE
ON
PVC COVER BLOCKS, CONES
AND VARIOUS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS
In recent years, durability of concrete structures have become the cause of concern to all concrete
technologies and has led to the need to codify related requirements. In light of this, significant
changes have been incorporated in the latest IS:456:2000, to introduce in-built protection from factors
affecting durability of concrete structures. It is observed that more emphasis is given on the
following:-

1. Grade of concrete.
2. Mix Design.
3. Water-cement ratio.
4. Cover to the reinforcement.
5. Crack width.

It is now recommended by bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to follow the norms mentioned
hereunder, during execution to impart the applied degree of protection to the concrete structure

Cover to the reinforcement and crack width:

The revised version of IS: 456 emphasizes on minimizing the crack width to prevent ingress of
moisture in the structure, thus, reducing the chances of corrosion. The crack width mainly depends on
cover to the reinforcement and the stress level in the reinforcement. The stress level in the
reinforcement can be controlled during the design stage for specified cover. As such, during the
execution, it is very much important to maintain the specified cover. Moreover, the revised version
specifies tolerance limit on placing of the reinforcement and cover.

In order to follow the above norms, M/s MAXFORM INDUSTRIES has scientifically developed
various ranges of PVC cover blocks to impart DURABILITY & accordingly provide proper cover to
steel reinforcement.

If selection of cover block is not done critically, all such vital important norms cannot be fulfilled and
hence may lead to more crack width, thereby chances of ingress of moisture, ultimately leading to
corrosion of steel, seriously affecting the quality and DURABILITY of the structure.

In view of this fact, we ensure our product conforming to the following specifications:-

1. Dimensionally stable.

2. The cover block imparts sturdiness to the reinforcement cages and do not get displaced
during the placing of concrete/compaction.

3. The design of cover block is arrived to make it strong, sturdy and dimensionally stable.

4. The cover blocks withstand with the tough conditions prevailing at construction site.

5. The cover blocks withstand with the increase temperature during the process of hydration of
concrete.

6. The cover blocks have rough/protruding surface to ensure proper surface bonding with the
concrete.

It is generally observed that, the cement mortar cover blocks do not comply with the above
specifications and requirements as laid down in revised version of IS:456.
