REDUCE VEHICULAR

BACKGROUND:
POLLUTION & PROVIDING LMC
The primary cause of Air Pollution in Bangalore is due to
very high usage/percentage of personal vehicles (both cars
and scooters, which constitute almost 88% of all vehicles in
operation) besides Buses and Transport Vehicles, as is
evident from the adjacent figure recently published in one
of the leading news paper.

So its pretty obvious that to reduce pollution, one needs to

facilitate bringing down the use of Scooters and Cars. Any
solution that limits use of cars and scooter will bring down
pollution levels drastically. Local Govt bodies can bring in
laws to restrict use of these vehicles and even stop
registration of new vehicles (as in Singapore), but such
interventions creates unrest, caos, affect jobs & economy,
so will not have ploitical will to do so.

DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED INTERVENTION:

Now with slowly but surely expanding Metro rail network ,
further being augmented by the expansion of Suburban rail
network, large % of people will eventually embrace these
modes of transport over private mode for their daily
commute to work, due the conveniences, speed, increased
productivity, reduced pollution and easy connectivity that
these mode of transport will bring forth, but it will still not
solve the last mile connectivity issue for which people will
have to maintain personal vehicles or used shared services.
This is the point where we wish to bring in the intervention.

Our proposed intervention is aimed at reducing the use of

scooters and cars by bringing in systemic change in the
public transport system by addressing the last mile
connectivity issue, which in our opinion is the key reason for
use of personal vehicles.

Our proposal is to introduce 30 Seater, CNG Mini Buses and Battery Operated Buses, Bugggys (solar charged on
the go) which will connect the Metro and primary Bus Stations (on main roads only) to the residential areas. this
will facilitate and address the last mile connectivity issue, by providing safe, convenient and affordable service.
and most importantly will cut down pollution in residential areas, will also cut down traffic in the arterial roads...
more and more people will walk to home from street ends, which is good from a health perspective too.

Once we have an effective last mile connectivity, the number of vehicles on the main roads (on a daily basis will
come down drastically and thereby further bringing pollution levels down.
This is a very feasible solution as the buses do not have to travel long distances (averaging about 5-6 km max). The
use of solar charging on the go can bring down charging time during end of day/shift, or we could have battery
swapping stations or additional charged buses ready, In case of CNG buses this is not be an issue,

The large capacity BMTC buses would be restricted to running on only major-Trunk roads, similarly the LMC(last
mile connectivity)battery powered buses will not be allowed to run on major Trunk roads, see illustration
below...LMC buses /buggies will ply only in restricted regions indicated by yellow and green cover.

Over a period of time it is expected that BMTC will move from diesel to CNG anyway, which will further help the
cause of bringing pollution levels down. 6 and 8 Seater buggies will be very efficient, mobile and easy to get in get
out for people in a hurry.

DETAILS OF IMPLEMENTATION PLAN:

BMTC to be geared up for the change:-

1. BMTC to order battery operated buses.. for all localities, or pvt players can be brought in to run the service.

2. BMTC to construct charging bays or battery swapping staions.

3. Re-vamp fleet:, stop purchase of diesel buses and move to CNG

4. Cut down unnecessary long routes, restrict to main roads for larger buses.. (CNG)
5. Retrain drivers and maintenance staff, opportunity for women drivers

6. Will need to create local bus hubs/shelters ,, planning to be decentralized,..localized

7. BMTC and Metro to work to create Bus stations at every Metro stations, govt to procure space or create space
for buses,..

8. Govt to build walkways (closed ) foot over bridges from Metro stations to Bus bays.

9. Bus Re-Design, all LMC buses/buggies to modify interiors and to create space for luggage & other conveniences

Methodology to Evaluate the Impact of Proposal :-

1. Estimate number of vehicles that will go off the road & calculate pollution numbers

2. Estimate drop in pollution when changing over from Diesel to CNG for BMTC buses.

Project Time Line :-

Pilot can be implemented within six months to one year in some localities of Bangalore which are served by metro

Estimate of Annual project cost :-

Not sure of this question.. assuming As part of our role as facilitators, consultants , conduct studies of different
areas and come up with suggestions and recommendations:- we expect an Annual Budget of Rs=35-40 lakhs

Partners and Assistance from Karnataka govt:

Expect data and interaction support from BMTC and Metro Team

List of Agencies and Organisations that would partner in Intervention:

Traffic police officials, Traffic experts and BMTC & BBMP,..
