PHYSICS Test- Unit I & Unit II (External Students)

Time allowed: 90 minutes Maximum Marks: 35

General Instructions:

(i) All questions are compulsory. There are 13 questions in all.

(ii) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D & Section E.
(iii) Section A contains three questions of one mark each, Section B contains three questions of two marks
each, Section C contains four questions of three mark each, Section D contains one value based
question of four marks and Section E contains two questions of five marks each.

Section-A (1 mark each)

1. Define electric field strength. Is it a vector or a scalar quantity?

2. Write the SI unit and dimension of electric flux.
3. Find the charge on the capacitor as shown in the circuit.

Section-B (2 marks each)

4. A 600pF capacitor is charged by a 200 V supply. It is then disconnected from the supply and is
connected to another uncharged 600pF capacitor. How much electrostatic energy is lost in the
process?
5. Two charges 5nC and -2nC are placed at points (5cm, 0, 0) and (23 cm, 0, 0) in a region of space
where there is no other external field. Calculate the electrostatic potential energy of this charge
system.
6. Two tiny spheres carrying charges 1.5 µC and 2.5 µC are located 30 cm apart. Find the potential
and electric field at the mid-point of the line joining the two charges.

Section-C (3 marks each)

7. Derive an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor when a dielectric slab of
dielectric constant K and thickness t= d/2 but of same area as that of the plates is inserted
between the capacitor plates, where‘d’ is the separation between the plates.
8. Two charges q and -3q are placed fixed on x-axis separated by distance‘d’. Where a third charge
2q should be placed such that it will not experience any force?
9. A hollow cylindrical box of length 1 m and area of cross-section 25 cm2 is placed in a 3-D
coordinate system as shown in the fig. The electric field in the region is given by,
E= 50xÎ, where E is in N/C and ‘x’ is in metres. Find

(i) Net flux through the cylinder.
(ii) Charge enclosed by the cylinder.

10. An electric dipole of length 10 cm having charges 6*10-3 C, placed at 300 with respect to a
uniform electric field, experience a torque of magnitude 6 3 Nm. Calculate
(i) magnitude of electric field and (ii) potential energy of electric dipole.

Section-D (4 marks)

11. While travelling back to his residence in the car, Dr. Pathak was caught up in a thunderstorm. It
became very dark. He stopped driving the car and waited for thunderstorm to stop. Suddenly he
noticed a child walking alone on the road. He asked the boy to come inside the car till the
thunderstorm stopped. Dr. Pathak dropped the boy at his residence. The boy insisted that Dr.
Pathak should meet his parents. The parents expressed their gratitude to Dr. Pathak for his
concern for safety of the child.
Answer the following questions based on the above information:
(a) Why is it safer to sit inside a car during a thunderstorm?
(b) Which two values are displayed by Dr. Pathak in his actions?
(c) Which values are reflected in parent’s response to Dr. Pathak?
(d) Give an example of a similar action on your part in the past from everyday life.

Section-E (5 marks each)

12. (a) State and prove Gauss theorem in electrostatics.

(b) Two point charges + Q1 and +Q2 are placed on opposite sides of a circular disc as shown in
the figure. Find the flux through the disc.

13. Two capacitors with capacitances C1 and C2 are changed to potentials V1 and V2 respectively and
then connected in parallel. Calculate the common potential across the combination, the charge
on each capacitor, the electrostatic energy stored in the system and the change in electrostatic
energy from its initial value.
