SAMPLE

Students have been working on clay gargoyle sculptures and manipulating the material.
RATIONALE Students will not manipulate clear packing tape on the human body to create a free-standing
sculpture.
Social Justice
Students at this age are more aware of what is going on in the world around them. They see
things that they feel are right or wrong and they want to do something about it but sometimes
just don’t know how. Students will learn about an artist named Mark Jenkins who relates street
tape sculpture that usually are framed around a social issue such as homelessness or animal
rights to put in areas where people can’t ignore them. Students will come up with a few ideas of

social issues in the world today in groups or pairs and decide on one for the project. Students
will research it and compose a paragraph of element they want to express in their art work.
Next, they will learn how to create each limb out of tape and choose up to three limbs to
include in their work. Outside elements can be included in their natural form or tape form. Next
students will choose an area in the school to place it and do so. Last students will orally present
to the class their project and incorporated connections to Marks work.

Lesson 3: 3RE Identify examples of visual culture and discuss how visual art is used to shape

Lesson 1: Student will identify how the artist Mark Jenkins uses the media tape to convey
messages of social justice in his work. Students will research social justice issues in the
world and come up with ideas to use contemporary art to show and make statements on
the culture.
