A belief is a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person

or thing. It is conviction of the truth of some statement. Every person has its own beliefs

and views in life. Everyone believes in something-religion, an afterlife, love at first

sight, fate, marriage, etc. For many, these beliefs make up large part of their lives and

their beings.

Beliefs play a major role on today’s society. Our life seems almost entirely on institution

and beliefs. Our beliefs may come from our own family, our friends and our community.

The views that we see may change as different circumstances occur each day. The

environment around us has a powerful influence on the decisions that we produce.

Family is the basis of everything. Who I am, the person I have become, the paths that

I followed, and the paths that I avoided. My core values were built throughout my life,

mainly due to the values that I observed from my family.

I grew up from a Catholic family. I personally believe in Jesus Christ and that He died

on the cross to save us and give us the forgiveness of our sins. I belong to the Catholic

Church because I was baptized by Catholics and did my first communion in a Catholic

Church. Although I grew up as a Catholic, I am not closing my door to other religions.

I attended mass from different religion. One thing I love for being a Catholic and I think

it’s one of my core values is that we don’t judge. Catholics don’t judge people’s sins

too harsh as other religions from Christians like the Adventists do. A Baptist told me

that it’s so wrong to believe in saints. A Muslim told me that I will not be saved because

I believe in Jesus Christ. Both of them were implying that I am committing a sin. I

respect them for thinking that way because that’s how people from their religion taught

them. But, I would never tell a person or judge a person that he is a sinner just because

he has a different from mine.

I am a Filipino. I have lived my whole life here in the Philippines. Filipinos have many

beliefs on some supernatural powers. These beliefs have come from the different

sayings and superstitions of our ancestors that aim to prevent danger from happening.

These are part of our cultures. My family believed on these beliefs. They told me that

there’s nothing wrong in following some of these beliefs. My parents believed those

but I don’t exactly believe on superstitious beliefs. In fact, I don’t believe on betting

your future to chances or any superstitious beliefs. I have this mind-set that if you want

to succeed in life, you should work hard for that. It’s true that through working hard

your efforts will pay off.

I have always believed in discipline and hard work like ingredients in the recipe to

achieve my goals and aspirations. Having a positive attitude and drive undisputedly

translate to success and prosperity. I can term them as my core competencies

because many people deem it only capable of achieving success through shortcuts

and through taking it to chances.

My parents raised me to be fair in every situations. I believed that fairness is something

that should be present to our lives. It’s hard to be fair especially when there are forces

that influenced you not to exhibit fairness.

Integrity is the core value that I consider essential for anyone. In my opinion, integrity

is very important to every workplace. If a person lacks integrity, this person is not

reliable. This value come from home and from church. I learned to give importance to

this value during my college days.

Good manners is everything. It will bring you everywhere. Having good manners in

front of adults, or respecting others have been implanted into me through my family. I
believe that as a young person, I should always be respectful. Respecting others is

something that I will teach my children as well.

A political ideology is a coherent set of ideas of on how people should live together.

Out of the all political ideologies, I believed I am a liberalist. Liberalism desires for a

free, open, and tolerant society. In view of this ideology, humans are rational being

and are able to recognize and promote self-interest.

Liberalism respects the individual and his/her rights. It believes in the innate potential

of every individuals. It gives people the freedom to follow their dreams and live their

life to the fullest. If there was no liberalism, there would be no space for people to start

companies of their own. Everyone is encouraged to do better.

Liberalism focuses on non-violence and non-coercion. It is based on the individual’s

natural striving and people would embrace it without any need for coercion.

I believe liberalism is the best ideology because it is filled with democratic ideas.

Freedom is not compromised. Life requires freedom and if man is to survive, he must

keep the product of his labour, his right of property The government must protect this

right.

Development is always deliberated with economic connotations and it is referred to as

an increase in the gross national product or in per capital. For me, development has

something to do with freedom. According to 1998 Nobel prize winner, Amartya Sen,

freedom is both the primary objective of development, and the principal means of

development. The human being is an engine of change. I agree to the idea of Sen.
I personally think that human is the key for innovation and for knowledge. There are

many developed countries that are lacking from natural resources but then they are

rich in manpower.

In Japan, there are fewer natural resources compared to us however, they are richer.

Their populations are way too smaller compared to us. But why is Japan is a better

place? Freedom is the reason why. The government supports its people to do their

thing. Japan encourages innovation while in the Philippines supports only few. The

problem with our government is that it lacks trust to our own people. In the Build Build

Build Program of Duterte, they made a contract with other nations. Yes, we need help

from other nations because we lack technology. But, what I think we need right now is

a policy that will support innovators in our country.

If people were given a freedom especially entrepreneurs and innovators to showcase

their talents, knowledge and skills, then surely development will start. If the

government supports people from showing their capabilities and considers their

opinions, I think our economic condition will improve since human resource is the key

for success.

It’s also important that people should continuously be educated. But people find it hard

especially for those professionals with a license to continually learn. Attending a

seminar or training for a day is expensive. There are many requirements that needed

for renewals of licenses but their salaries are just enough for their daily cost of livings.

Government should do something about this.

Freedom is not only granting a right. This freedom includes any kind of support from

the government. Implementing a policy that mandates companies to have seminars in

their own companies will be a great help.

Philippines is rich in biodiversity. It has more natural resources compared to other

developed countries. So why Philippines is still underdeveloped?

I have mentioned in my last paper that Philippines is still in transitional stage. Many

people believed that the main source of underdevelopment of our country is due to

corruption. According to the Andre Franke, the reason behind the underdevelopment

of a country is due to dependency of this country to a developed country. For Fallows,

it is due to our failed culture.

The problems why we are underdeveloped is because of politicians lack competency.

The people who are sitting in the power lack knowledge. They don’t know the real

problems. Most of our countrymen will tell that Philippines is poor mainly because of

corrupt officials. It’s not completely right though. For me, it’s because most of the

government officials lack competency. Most of them will probably don’t know the law

itself. They caught a corrupt but they can’t bring back what they stole.

The failure to properly implement a policy is one thing you will notice that most officials

are incompetent. Every delay costs you a loss. There are things that need to be passed

as laws but they are not being passed. What would be the reason?

It’s because senates and representatives don’t know the problems to be solved.

Development has something to do with freedom. If only government would pass a law

that supports our human capital, then our economic status will improve.

I would recommend that government officials must also be mandated to continually

undergo learnings. They must be required to be educated about laws, economy and

management before they run for elections. For the government, they must pass a
policy that supports human capital and not a policy that kills professionals and other

non-professionals.
