I. Objectives

a. Find the volume of a rectangular prism

b. Derive the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism.
c. Appreciate accuracy and orderliness in daily activities.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Finding the Volume of a Rectangular Prism

Materials: Rectangular prisms, cubes, ruler, powerpoint presentation
References: K to 12 Grade 4vCurriculum Guide, LM Math Grade 4 pages 229-232
Value Focus: accuracy and orderliness

III. Procedure

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Drill
Drill on multiplication
2. Review
Volume of a Solid Using Standard Units
3. Motivation
Show a transparent plastic container filled with balls. Ask the pupils to guess the number of balls
inside the container. Let one pupil count the balls to find the answer. Ask them how they can make a
good guess of the total number of balls.
B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation

Present the situation to the class.

Mother has a rectangular box. It has a length of 10 cm, a width 4 cm and a height of 3
cm. What is its volume?
Ask: What does mother have?
What is the length? Width? Height?
What is asked in the problem?
How will you solve the problem?
Explain how to determine the volume of the prism.
2. Performing the activities
Group activity
Divide the class into 3 groups. Distribute 1-cm cubes, a ruler, and a rectangular prism with 4
rows, 3 columns and 10 layers. Ask them to work together and find the volume using the rows, columns
and layers. Aside from counting the number of cubes and multiplying the number of rows by the
number of columns and by the number of layers, ask them to think of other ways to find the volume.
Solutions: By measuring the length, width and height using a ruler.
By relating the number of rows, columns and layers with width, height and length of the
container.
By multiplying the length l by the width (w) and by the height (h).
V= l x w x h
= 10 cm x 4 cm x 3 cm
= 120 cm3
3. Processing the Activities

Let the pupils discuss how they found the volume.

(The number of cubes is the volume of rectangular prism.)
Ask:
1. How did you find the volume aside from counting the cubes?
Expected answer: By multiplying the number of rows by the number of columns and by
the number of layers.
2. What did you do with the measurement of the length, width and height?
Expected answer: We related length with rows, width with columns and height with
layers.
3. What is the formula in finding the volume of a rectangular prism?
Lead the pupils to derive the formula for finding the volume of a cube and a rectangular
prism.
4. How did you find the activity?
4. Reinforcing the Concept and Skill

5. Generalization

How do you find the volume of rectangular prism?

 Volume is measured in cubic units, such as cubic centimeters (cm3), cubic meters (m3), and
cubic millimeters (mm3).
 Use V= l x w x h to fine the volume of a rectangular prism. Here l is the length, w is the width,
and h, is the height
6. Application

Let the pupils answer this problem

a. A box is a 20 cm long, 10 cm wide and 5 cm tall. What is the volume of the box?

b. A toy box is in the shape of a rectangular prism. It is 35 cm long and 15 cm high. If its width is 20 cm,
what is its volume?

V. Assignment

Find the volume.

1. The length of rectangular prism is 6 cm and the width is 4 cm while it stands 10 cm. What is its
volume?

2. A wooden box is 24 cm long, 18 cm wide and 9 cm high. How much space does it enclose?
