Compact Design
The Alcatel 9400 UX short-haul
microwave system consists of an
outdoor unit (ODU) and an indoor
unit (IDU).
The ODU can be used with an integrated
antenna (13 GHz and above) up to 600
mm diameter, and is secured by means
of quick latches.
The new generation, low capacity
PDH radio called the Alcatel 9400 AWY
offers a large feature set and a high level
of integration. The ODU of this new
product family can also be used with
the Alcatel 9400 UX platform.
The interchangeability of the new
and the previous generation ODU
guarantees continuity for customers
who have large installed bases of the
Alcatel 9400 UX. Additionally, this
interchangeability improves spares
service, maintenance and expansion.

The IDU is very compact (1U height)
and can be adapted for a large

features embedded multiplexing and
transmission functions for the following
capacities: 2E1, 4E1, 8E1, 16E1 and
E3+E1.

The Alcatel 9400 UX Microwave family
is compliant with ITU-R, ITU-T, ETSI
standards, including EMC and safety
standards.
Technical Highlights
> Excellent spectrum efficiency is
achieved using 16 QAM modulation
while high system gain is achieved
using 4 QAM modulation digital
filtering.
> The modem features Forward Error
Correcting (FEC) and an equalizer
for even better radio performance
(within ATM networks).

coverage of a complete frequency
band with only four different outdoor
units (only one for the 7/8 GHz band).

control with accurate settings.
> Different software packages make
the system capacity-agile, up to a
maximum (defined as an option).
This maximum can be as high as
16E1 within the same unit. This
feature permits an optimization of
the used spectrum and easy upgrades.
> Integrated 2 Mbit/s wayside traffic is
also available (at 34 Mbit/s).
An antenna alignment system facilitates
quick and accurate installation.

automatic errorless receiver
switching to protect the most critical
transmission paths.
> The digital frame incorporates a link
identity code to prevent the capture
of an unwanted signal.
> The system features near-end and
remote-end loop-back facilities as
well as an embedded tributary cross-
connect matrix for test or network
reconfiguration purposes.
> The system incorporates built-in test
functions such as a pseudo-random
bit sequence generator, which can
insert a standard test signal for bit
error rate measurements.
Alcatel 9400 UX: Classic IDU
A Full Range of Options
A configurable software package
determines the maximum system
capacity and defines the capacity
agility range. Software updates can
be downloaded into the unit from a
remote location, facilitating centralized
management of the units. The Alcatel
9400 UX also provides remote mon-
itoring and test capabilities, including
an integrated RF loop, allowing
standalone tests of a terminal (13 GHz
and above). SNMP monitoring and
control of the unit is also possible.
In addition, the short-haul microwave
systems can incorporate as many as
five 64 kbit/s auxiliary channels with
a wide range of voice and data options,
and multiplex and switching elements
can be protected on request in 1+1
configurations.

and Operation
Thanks to its mechanical design, built-in
test functions and user-friendly PC
interface (Windows™ environment),
the short-haul microwave systems allow
fast and affordable installation as well
as quick set-up and easy operation.
Simplified Maintenance
The Alcatel 9400 UX Microwave family
achieves maximum commonality across
frequencies and capacities, thus greatly
reducing the need for spare parts and
training. High reliability is obtained
through the use of advanced technology,
highly qualified components and severe
test procedures in the factory. High MTBF
limits the maintenance to routine visits.

Network Management
The Alcatel 9400 UX Microwave family
features a leading concept in network
management, using either SNMP Agent
over TCP/IP or an Alcatel proprietary
protocol. The Alcatel 9400 UX/SNMP
Network Element (NE) provides SNMP
interfaces and integrates an SNMP
Agent in order to be managed by an
external Network Management System
(NMS). In a multivendor environment,
it can be managed either by the Alcatel
1300 NMS or by other NMS providers by
means of an SNMP interface. The SNMP
protocol also brings a valuable facility to
automatically reroute the telecommu-
nication management network (TMN)
messages over all of the operational
TCP/IP interfaces in the equipment.
The Alcatel 9400 UX is designed to satisfy
the numerous digital transmission needs
of public and private networks for multiple
applications.
No matter how big or small the
network, an appropriate solution is
available for remote management. In
a standalone configuration, reporting
of alarms and controls, configuration
management and quality information
is provided to a master terminal (which
monitors simple networks using the
Alcatel 9400 UX Microwave family).
This user-friendly management requires
only a PC in a Windows™ environment.
In a larger network, the Alcatel TMN
workstation manages the unit via the
QB3* interface.
