Automatic Transmission 6L45 MYA Garage Shift Clunk When Shifting Between
Drive and Reverse
Subject: Automatic Transmission 6L45 MYA Garage Shift Clunk When Shifting Between Drive and Reverse
Group:7B — A/T
Ref. No.:15–H-0006
Condition
A clunk noise from the rear of the vehicle whilst the customer completes a change of direction shift (Garage Shift - Drive to Reverse
or Reverse to Drive). The noise can often be described as a "clunk" or "ping" coming from the rear of the vehicle.
It is important to note the difference between this condition and the take-off clunk noise which only occurs when moving in a forward
direction under light to medium throttle in Drive or Sports modes, as described in 15–H-0007.
Cause
The splined interface between the output flange and the shaft has a small amount of freeplay, enabling movement between the
splines of the output shaft and output flange. This produces a noise on a garage shift which can propagate up the prop shaft and
transmission tunnel to the rear of the vehicle. The differential can be often mistakenly described as the source of the clunk. The noise
amplitude can be increased with additional engine load.

Install the output flange over the shaft. Excess adhesive should be evident on the output shaft after installation, as shown in the
following picture. If no excess is observed, reapply the adhesive. Once installed, wipe the excess off with a clean rag.
NOTE: The adhesive is only to be applied to the output flange and NOT ONTO THE SHAFT. It is critical to avoid adhesive migrating
to the lip seal of the transmission.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some WE SUPPORT
vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know- VOLUNTARY
how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See TECHNICIAN
your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
