Subject: Automatic Transmission 6L45 MYA Garage Shift Clunk When Shifting Between Drive and Reverse

Bulletin.

Condition

A clunk noise from the rear of the vehicle whilst the customer completes a change of direction shift (Garage Shift - Drive to Reverse
or Reverse to Drive). The noise can often be described as a "clunk" or "ping" coming from the rear of the vehicle.

It is important to note the difference between this condition and the take-off clunk noise which only occurs when moving in a forward
direction under light to medium throttle in Drive or Sports modes, as described in 15–H-0007.

Cause

The splined interface between the output flange and the shaft has a small amount of freeplay, enabling movement between the
splines of the output shaft and output flange. This produces a noise on a garage shift which can propagate up the prop shaft and
transmission tunnel to the rear of the vehicle. The differential can be often mistakenly described as the source of the clunk. The noise
amplitude can be increased with additional engine load.

Correction

1. Remove Propeller Shaft

Please follow the appropriate SI instructions (depending on the model type and year).
2. Remove the Transmission Output Nut & Flange
Please follow the SI instruction.
Discard the output shaft flange nut after removal
Remove the transmission output flange from the transmission output shaft
3. Inspect & Remove Corrosion
Look for evidence of corrosion on the output flange and shaft, as shown in the following photos.
Clean off the flange and shaft as follows:
Remove any corrosion with a wire brush.
Clean the parts with Prepsol and wipe thoroughly
Allow the parts to fully dry before proceeding

4. Re-Install the Output Flange with Adhesive

Apply GM P/N 89021297 (Loctite 272 can be used as an alternative) across the width of the flange splines, as shown in the
following photo. Ensure there is adhesive applied to every spline along its complete length

Install the output flange over the shaft. Excess adhesive should be evident on the output shaft after installation, as shown in the
following picture. If no excess is observed, reapply the adhesive. Once installed, wipe the excess off with a clean rag.
NOTE: The adhesive is only to be applied to the output flange and NOT ONTO THE SHAFT. It is critical to avoid adhesive migrating
to the lip seal of the transmission.

5. Prepare the New Output Flange Nut

Ensure the new output flange nut thread is clean. Apply Prepsol if required, and allow sufficient drying time before proceeding.
Do not re-use the original removed nut. Discard it if you haven’t already done so.
6. Install the Output Flange Nut with Adhesive.
Apply GM P/N 89021297 (Loctite 272 can be used as an alternative) across the thread of the new nut, as shown in the picture
below
Install the new nut, following the service procedure. However, tighten the nut to 105 Nm +/- 5 Nm and stake the retention tab
in 2 areas.

7. Re-Install the Propeller Shaft

Please follow the appropriate SI instructions (depending on the model type and year).
Check for any relevant Technical Bulletins for propeller shaft installation.
8. Curing Time
For optimal results it is advisable not to operate the vehicle for 24 hours to allow the adhesive to cure.
However if required the vehicle may be operated at light throttle applications after 4 hours.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some WE SUPPORT
vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know- VOLUNTARY
how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See TECHNICIAN
your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
