Sir:

I have the honor to ask permission in your good office to allow me to conduct my
action research with the title: SIMPLIFIED ACTIVITY SHEETS IN MATHEMATICS: ITS
EFFECTS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS this
school year 2016-2017.

I am hoping for your favorable approval.

SIMPLIFIED ACTIVITY SHEETS IN MATHEMATICS: ITS EFFECTS ON THE

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS

RESEARCH PROPOSAL

RICHIE P. AQUINO
Teacher – I/Proponent
INTRODUCTION

Simplified activity sheets are an effective tool in ongoing efforts encouraging our

students to engage their brains during class. Simplified activity sheets used in class can

also help direct students' learning out-of-class.

One obvious disadvantage to incorporating simplified activity sheets into one’s

teaching is the extra time that must go into creating them. However, I find that an

imperfect simplified activity sheet often serves a particular purpose almost as well as a

“perfect” one: a finding that relieves the pressure of finding sufficient time to create the

perfect simplified activity sheet. And of course, simplified activity sheets can be revised

and improved in subsequent years when repeating a particular class. But even better,

simplified activity sheets can be shared and improved by colleagues.

Mathematics faculty at my institution habitually share their course materials with

colleagues, explicitly giving each other the right to revise and reuse simplified activity

sheets. Joint authorship, both simultaneous and asynchronous, brings additional

benefits.

Additionally, using another’s simplified activity sheet and attributing credit

properly provides our students a subtle model of how to work together in an academic

setting.

Despite of exerting luxury time in making a simplified activity sheets, the

researcher looking forward that this proposed research will determine the level of

improvement of Grade 9 students on their academic performance in Mathematics.

Statement of the Problem

The researcher aims to determine the level of improvement of academic

performance of Grade 9 students using simplified activity sheets in Mathematics.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the quality of activity sheets given in Mathematics 9?

2. What is the level of effects of academic performance of Grade 9 students?

3. Does the simplified activity sheets in Mathematics 9 effective?

Hypothesis

There is no significant improvement on the academic performance of Grade 9

students using simplified activity sheets as a learning tool.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Instructional materials play an important role in ensuring the effectiveness of

teaching and learning activities. Worksheet is a kind of printed instructional material that

is prepared and frequently used by teachers in order to help students to gain

knowledge, skills and values by providing helpful comments about the course objectives

and enabling students to engage in active learning and learning-by-doing in and out of

the school (Kaymakcı, 2006, p. 5).

Teachers, despite training and professional development, have a natural

tendency to teach the way that they have been taught (Quinn, 1998). In addition,

elementary teachers with limited confidence in their own mathematic abilities will resort

to using teaching styles based on experiences from throughout their schooling. These

teachers will monopolize their time in the classroom with the traditional methods of

instruction (Gresham, 2007). This involves teacher lecture, memorization, workbooks,

and worksheets.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study aims to determine the level of improvement on academic performance

of Grade 9 students using simplified activity sheets as a learning tool in Mathematics.

This study will use Quasi-Experimental Design-Equivalent materials, Pre-Test,

Post-Test Design wherein Method A will test the standard activity sheet and Method B

will test the simplified activity sheet.

Research Instrument

The researcher will use Assessment skills tool as a data gathering instrument. It

will involve collection of data in order to test the hypothesis to answer questions

concerning the level of improvement on the academic performance of Grade 9 students

using the simplified activity sheets as a learning tool.

Respondents and Locale

The study will be conducted in Malaya National High School, Malaya, Banga.

South Cotabato. The respondents of the study will be the Grade 9 students of Malaya

National High School. This will be conducted on the 3rd Grading Period of the school

year 2016 – 2017.
